Metroid Prime - A genre defining game of the decade

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2
Date: December 01, 2002
Author: Amazon User

I'm 33, an old skool gamer who very much cherishes the classic 2D games like Super Metroid for SNES. I bought an XBox because of Halo, and yesterday I bought a Gamecube for Metroid Prime. I honestly don't care about the console pissing war - if a game is great I will buy the system to play it on.

I've played this game for about 12 hours and am completely in love with it. It combines the excitement of a first person shooter like Halo/Quake with the adventure and problem solving of Myst/Riven with a splash of Marble Madness to boot(remember that arcade game with the trackball? Once you play this game you'll know what I mean).

Be warned, the controls take a few hours to get extremely comfortable with. Only the left thumbstick is used for movement and aiming. This game relies on an auto-lock and strafe mechanism to combat enemies. At first it can be very frustrating, but by the time you face the second boss you will be forced to have mastered this crucial skill.

The game design is ingenious. You first must battle your way through a space station with a wide variety of components at your hand. Once you beat the first boss and manage to escape the ship before explosion, you are left on the planet with next to nothing. The rest of the game involves adventuring around the massive world of Talon IV in order to unearth a myriad of powerups and solve the riddle of the planet.

The transition from 2D to 3D couldn't have been done better. The world design is simply ingenious. As you work your way through the different sections and terrains you'll glimpse areas just out of reach that tempt you to return once you are properly equipped. Everything folds out as one large elaborate puzzle. And in the meantime there's enough action packed fighting to keep you busy for days.

Metroid Prime is truly outstanding in every way. No matter what type of video game enthusiast you are - this game will exceed your every expectation. Thanks very much to Retro Studios for this masterpiece!

I am Addicted to this Game

My true rating for this game is 4.5 STARS. This game is highly enjoyable and highly addictive. I believe that the rating has something to be said for it too. It is T for Teen. Probably anyone younger will not be able to negotiate the game. I am a first time metroid player so my opinion is hopefully unbiased. I bought this game for my girls as Samus is a female though they did not want to play the game. I noticed that some of the other reviewers stated that the game was hard and complicated. Yes it is. I am wondering if they are too lazy to play a game that has no imagination.

I love the idea about save stations and not being able to save the game anytime that you want to and come back with 100% energy. This is the typical game where there are level bosses etc. and though I am not a huge gan of this type of game play it makes the game tough. About clearing an area. If you have to go back through an area it is easy to clear out the monsters and retrieve their energy so that you can become replenished to an extent in your energy.

Here are my gripes. In reference to the first person perspective that this game offers I do agree that it is a little narrow in scope. I think that Samus should be able to jump as high as is depicted by the video at the beginning of the game. I would like to have the ability to switch to third person perspective, however there are many other reasons why the game is highly enjoyable. The graphics are very good. The sounds are plesant and not too anoying. I love the world layout of the game it is a plesant change from the usual 1 dimensional configurations seen in other games.

My son who is 7 (he can not play some parts) and I play this game most every night for a little while and it is truely a great experience. We have a heck of a time beating some of the monsters which makes the game even more challenging. We have been playing it atleast 3 nights a week for an hour and are only at 21 % finished with the game. After I get home from work and we workout together we get on the gamecube and enjoy this game. We just love it. We have become a real team trying to kick the but of all of the monsters in this game. These are also some of the best monsters I have ever seen something like what you would expect to see in motion pictures. If you want to enjoy a game that is tough to beat and teaches a little preserverance, one that looks good and has lots of challenges and rewards this is the game for you. Enjoy.

ONE OF THE BEST GAMECUBE GAMES EVER!

Metriod prime is a classic that should not be missed. Every one kept thinking it would turn out to be horrible cause it was made by an american company in texas(thtas not prety cool to diss txes like that) well than when the game came out boy were alota people sad for dissing them like that.....turns out mp was one of the best shooters out right now!

samus aron rules in this game. Move out masterchief..theres a new chick in town. I think metriod prime was waaaaaaaaay betta than halo and I COULD give a rats lower torsoe what you people think of. The game rocks ok. The graphics are amazingly well done. THe bosses are fun and awsome....and some quit tough.

there are alota stuff you need to get inorder to beat this game.
beam, ice beam, plasma beam, wave beam, power bomb, combos such as super missle launcher, flame thrower and ect.
The game is very atmospheric. Better than halo I can tell you
that. The places are brilliantly done is such manner you just fall in love with this game cause it is
that good! The hunter returns in this atmospheric work of art
wich may make alota people wanting for more. The bosses are fun parts and some what frustraiting. Esspecially when you have to acctually fight metriod prime! The bosses are over all the best part of the game and also the stuff you get. Lets not forget that now. Youll be getting variouse types of suit to fit in this world such as Choso Ruins, Tallon overworld,Phendrana drifts and the game is very difficult when you play it the first time.
Youll need to get some stuff before youre off to your next quest like after you have gotten one of the suits youll need to look for things such as missile expansions and you have to have about 250!!
Yeah that sucks I know But once you get all your stuff its ayy ok. Also the energy tanks are very important. Youll need them if youre gonna wanna survive this game.

BOTTOM LINE IS GET THE GAME!.
Well lata gamaz

Metroid Prime lives up to the classic game that was of the 80's. The superb graphics add to the atmosphere of this game. The sound is also very atmospheric and the music is an amazing modern rendition of the past games. The controls are very comfortable, and the lock-on feature is balanced and does not zero out actual aiming. The pure style of Metriod Prime astounds me. This game must be acquired by anybody who buys a gamecube.

Metroid Prims is on my personal list of top 5 best games ever. I have played many, many games - from NES to Gamecube. This game sets new precidents in environmental effects and realism. Aside from the graphics, it also has engaging puzzle solving and platform jumping - all masked behind a first-person shooter. Again, I repeat, the true aspects of what this game is about are hidden behind the first-person shooter. Definately my favorite title among all of the next-gen systems (gamecube, PS2, and XBox) so far, and one of the best ever.

Even the demo kicks major (...)!!

This game alone is good enough reason to buy the GameCube, if you don't already have one. I myself consider Super Metroid one of the greatest games of all time, and I was wondering all these years when a follow-up would arrive. After eight years, the wait was finally over.

Mertoid Prime isn't really a sequel, since it takes place between the events of the first Metroid and Metroid II. Basically, Samus lands on a frigate in high orbit over Tallon IV. She realizes that the Space Pirates are up to no good, so she (for anyone who didn't know, Samus is female) investigates, and when the ship is about to explode, she sees an old nemesis. Upon landing at Tallon IV, she investigates further, learning more about the Pirates' plans, the Chozo, and other things. The Space Pirates' master plan: to use a mutagen called Phazon to enhance their ranks and create stronger forces.

The Graphics are so polished and so good that you'll think it was Metroid all over again. It's only up close that the quality falters, but it's negligable. The game also supports Dolby Pro Logic II, which is as good as its Digital counterpart, and also supports progressive scan. The control mechanics aren't hard to master, and are somewhat based on the mechanics of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You'll be using the Scan Visor a lot. You have to in order to get the best ending.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City needs to step aside. I can understand why it and GTA III were so successful, but, was anyone even paying attention to the graphics? I've seen graphics like that on the N64.

This game is an instant classic, and has the potential to be the greatest game of all time.

Engaging Game

I thoroughly enjoyed spending >15 hours of my life wandering my way through this game. Although challenging and confusing at times, it did make me think and strategize, which is what I was expecting from the game.

The only real qualm I have with the game is how you have to use the Scan Visor on EVERYTHING in order to get the 100% completion. When you finally get to the point you're missing 1-2 things, it just gets maddening.

BEST game EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"See you next adventure"

Ah yes, the last words of Samus at the end of the super classic that is Super Metroid: "See you next adventure!". Could there be..? YES! ANOTHER SEQUEL! Hurray...okay then, that said, I can express my opinion.

The reason I gave this game 4 stars is because I havn't actually played the full version - but before you freak out, keep in mind that I have done a lot of research on Metroid Prime and it does, indeed, look promising. Prime is based - as you probably have heard - right after the first Metroid. Our heroin, Samus Aran, is following a stress call coming from a seemingly vacant planet called Talon IV. Upon aproaching the planet, Samus notices a Station orbiting Talon IV and is beckoned to check it out. I'm just gonna stop there because it might spoil the plot that I have unfortunately overheard.

The gameplay in the demo seemed just fine, you start out with most of the equipment Samus got during her previous adventure. Morphball, Wavebeam, Icebeam, etc. This'll probably give you a good feel for all of the weapons before you eventually lose them due to circumstances that I'm not going to mention. The environments introduce you to many subtle, but beautiful aspects that can closely relate to reality. Aspects such as this include rain droplets on your visor, steam, condensation, reflections...and all that good stuff.

Sound = good in Metroid Prime, because apparently it supports Dolby Pro Logic five billion or whatever, and thats good! I guess. The music for this new addition to the series mostly consists of remixes from Super Metroid, but there are also some original songs to the mix as well. Sound Effects are engrossingly real and disgusting.

Many reviewers have said that this game "Is NOT a first person shooter", and they just stop at that. What the heck do you mean?? I think what they meant is that this game was not intended for action, hence the "shooter" part. This game is intended for exploration, not for the abundance of action that most would hope for. This game is a "First person EXPLORER", not a FPS...got dat? Yes, this game has lots of killing, but would you rather have immense death instead of mysterious places to discover? Think about it folks...
