A Simple Review for a Game I Quickly Lost Interest In

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 11 / 27
Date: January 03, 2004
Author: Amazon User

A am a huge fan of both Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask for N64, and despite conflicting opinions of critics concerning whether or the latter lived up to its predecessor's greatness, I fell in love with it like I did Ocarina of Time. Both games were very different, though the enjoyable core elements of the first Zelda for 64 remained in Majora's Mask - the ability to play musical intruments, ride horseback at near will, freely explore the vast world of villages and forests whilst encountering fun (if not a little cheesy) characters and slashing at enemies with your sword, as well as completing numerous other objectives that were fun but not essential to the story.

But enough about N64.

Windwaker was a dissapointment, to say the least. The creators of the game really leapt out on the edge of branch designing this one, and there's nothing wrong with that - unfortunately, the dramatic changes were for the worse, not for the better. The cartoon-ish graphics are not much of an eye-sore, as they are cute and have a certain flair of their own, though at times it does make me feel nostalgic for the previous games. The real problem came with what appeared to be my complete lack of freedom and the utter boredom of exploring the sea that should have been so interesting (as exploring the forests and such were in the previous games).

The objectives you must complete are in a linear and straight-forward sequence, lacking the freedom that was so enjoyable of the other Zelda games. Each level must be played when it is meant to be played, and there is little to explore the /extremely/ vast expanse of sea - that is, larger than the forests of the games I so frequently mention, but considerably emptier. There are very few, if any, enemies to kill and very few, if any, fun objectives to complete. When you stray from your course, the boat patiently reminds you that you are not supposed to go there, and you are forced to turn back. Once you reach your destination, the challenges involved in completing whatever tasks that lie ahead are small and no where near the infuriating complexity of Ocarina of Time's infamous water temple.

I honestly miss collecting sheilds and suits and swords amidst my adventures to different villages and such, and often wished the empty and void expanses of sea and dissapointing islands would offer me some sort of fun to-do to add spark and flair to an otherwise typical adventure game. Alas, no. You are required to find a sail for your ship, but that takes no more than a few seconds before you thrown into the sea and continue your quest that, by now, is beginning to get tiring.

Wind Waker does re-hash some old ideas, like the Pirate Fortress, but fails to bring back those that really matter - the things that made the Zelda games really stand out: complicated puzzles and the freedom to explore and wander and discover all that the foreign lands had to offer.

This a straight-forward little action game that could have been so much better. Perhaps it doesn't deserve two stars, but I've come to expect more from Zelda, and do, on occasion, plug in the old N64 to play Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time...

The biggest disapointment ever.

I'm sure some of you are already scanning my review to see me complain about the graphics but the truth is I could care less what the graphics look like. I just want a game that's a lot of fun to play and this one isn't at all.

This game can be divided into about three fractions (give or take). 1/3 of this game has you reading text, another 1/3 has you sailing on a ship, the other 1/3 has you actually playing the game. I must say that I have never been more bored in my life playing a video game. I do not care about the story. If I did I would buy a book, not a video game. I also don't care about sailing for 10 min at a time. When you sail you do absolutely nothing. I walked in on a friend playing this game once and he had his controller on the ground while he was just watching the ship sail. I guess that's what it takes to get a 5 star rating these days.

Now lets talk about the parts where you actually get to play the game. Sadly these parts aren't much fun either. It's basically the same game as OoT except MUCH easier. When I have to fight an enemy I usually give him a chance and just sorta wonder around him hoping he will attack me and give me some sort of challenge but no, he just sorta wonders around and aimlessly attacks me. I think the NES Zelda had a smarter AI.

Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this travesty of a "video game" and I use the term "video game" very loosely. It's one of the worst games I've played in my life and I've played ET for Atari. At least that game will let you move around and give you a good laugh.

Best Zelda Game I've Played

This game is more of a sequel to Ocarina of Time than Majora's Mask was. The Link in this game has no connection to the Link from the games. This game is set 100 years into the future, after Ganandorf has destroyed all of Hyrule, and after the three goddesse's have put buried most of it under water. The graphics are actually impressive and the number of temples is high. Meaning its going to take a long time before anyone gets through with this game.

The cel-shaded graphics look terrible when viewed in still-frame. It looks cheesy, but when it is actually in motion it looks very impressive. They made the whole thing look like a giant cartoon. Everything still has a 3D figure to stay with the times, but they don't fill in any major deatails. Such as individual hairs, or muscle shapes, stuff like that.

The battle style in the game has been changed from the old style of pushing the B button, into mashing the B button. In this game, all anyone has to do is continuously push one button in order to take down simple enemies. Where in the old games, one would have to do a little more work to take down simple enemies.

The dungeon bosses are strange, like always. Like other Zelda games, whatever new item you pick up in the dungeon is going to be the main item used to defeat the boss. This time, the bosses are much larger than those from the past, but aren't as difficult to beat.

Some things have changed over the hundred years that was skipped. The hero of time (Link from Ocarina of Time.) is now a legend. On a certain island, boys are still required to wear green clothes when they hit a certain age. This is why the character in this game is wearing green clothes.

This is a fun game to play, and could take a good while to get through, but the fighting style and battles have been simplified. The bosses are bigger than those from the earlier games, but simpler as well. This is a good game, and is the best Zelda game I have ever played.

Entertainment = 9/10

Favorite Part of the Game = Scene on the pirate's ship where Link needs to get into the dangerous tower to find his sister. They decide the best way to get him up there is by launching him in a barrel. When he realizes that he is about to get launched, he begins trying to free himself, but he is thrown into the air and smashes up against the wall.

If you are a fan of Ocarina or Mask, this game will be a let down. It might be great for a 6 year old, but for a die-hard Zelda player it was childish. I beat every boss on the first try. The new graphic style doesn't have the fullness of the previous two games.

I'm sad to say I bought my GameCube strictly so that I could play Zelda. After playing Wind "Sleeper" I wish I could return them both.

Doesn't live up to Zelda legacy

Pro:

- Graphics(could use more detail in certain spots)
- Soundtrack
- Control
- characters
- most gadgets
- Good dungeon design

Cons:
- Difficulty -1 star(imagine Madden only shipping with a rookie mode)
- Length/Pace - You do a lot of nothing. Overall gameplay is on the short side.
- Story - not fleshed out
- Mechanics - Long WW animations kill certain parts.

Overall the difficulty REALLY hurts the game, but a shortage of dungeons and non-optional fetch quests also are a pain. I find sailing kind of fun, but it's obvious that it was pushed on us to pad the length. If they would of put in difficulty settings and added a couple of dungeons(I heard two were cut, worst move ever) the other flaws would of been much more bearable.

Boring, painful.

Like many people, I was skeptical about the new graphics. But when i bought the game, i went into it with an open mind. everyone said "give the gameplay a chance to speak for the game!" and i did. the gameplay is as bad as the graphics.

starting with the basics..
graphics were bland, the characters and backgrounds had no texture or detail, everything was flat, and smooth.

the sound effects were good, but the music was not exactly involving.

the real downfall of this game is the gameplay.

90% of the enemies you encounter on this game can be defeated by pushing the attack button over and over again, you could literally do it blindfolded. some of them took strategy, but not enough of them. the game was too easy. i beat the last boss on my very first try, and i dont claim to be an especially skilled gamer.

the thing i hate most about this game is the amount of time you spend doing NOTHING. the game is set on many tiny islands over a wide ocean. in order to get from island to island, you must sail there on a boat. every time you want to change directions more than 45 degrees, you have to pull out your magic conductor's baton and play a little song... this is too repetitive. and any time you want to go from island to island, be ready to spend from 5-15 minutes just watching your boat moving through the water, i fell asleep many times waiting for the next island to show up on the horizon!

this part may just be me, but i found the graphics actually irritated my eyes after a few hours, which i havent experienced with other games.

i played this entire game with an open mind, hoping for things to improve as i progressed, but at the end i regretted spending the money, and my time on it. after beating it, i never wanted to play this game again. considering i beat it in 3 or 4 days, this game is definitely safe as a rental only. you may want to rent it just to see how badly wrong a good idea can go...

*NOTE: This will give EVERYTHING away. Don't read if you don't want to know the ending*
This is the sequel to the Adult Link time line. Ok, here's how it goes. Since Link had already returned to the present, he was not in the future. Ganondorf used the Triforce to break out of the sacred realm and claim hyrule as his own. Before he could do this, though, Hyrule was flooded. The Triforce of Wisdom from Adult Zelda went to the king minus one piece which the king still had, the Triforce of power was still with Ganondorf, and the Triforce of Courage was broken up into 8 pieces and scattered across new hyrule. 100 years later, Ganondorf sent a phoenix out to find Zelda. Since he thought she would be in disguise, he made the bird get any girl with Blonde hair. Somehow, the bird got tetra(really Zelda, but she didn't know it), tetra was dropped, and the bird got Aril instead. Link set out to get her, but needed the master sword. he got the 3 orbs of the elements and went under the sea and got the master sword. He then rescued his sister, but then found out about Ganondorf and tetra, lost against Ganondorf, and took tetra to hyrule where she turned into Zelda and got the Triforce of Wisdom. Link then needed to power up the master sword to full power(The same as it was in ocarina) to face Ganondorf. After he powered it up to max, he needed the Triforce of Courage to get passed the barrier surrounding Ganons Tower. He got that, got passed the barrier and made it to Ganondorf. Ganondorf either killed or knocked out Link and Zelda(I dunno, it was in Japanese) and took the other 2 pieces and completed the Triforce. Then the king stepped in and made some wish on the Triforce to either bring back Zelda/Link, or something else, and then they both woke up. Link then battled Ganondorf and stabbed the master sword in Ganondorf's head, turning him to stone. Hyrule then completely flooded, the king and the Triforce stayed under the sea, while Zelda without the Triforce turned back to tetra and then they both sailed off on there own boats into the sunset. That is the COMPLETE story

Disappointing

I played Ocarina of Time quite a while after it first came out, and it was the funnest, and most challenging, game I had ever played. So when I heard of Zelda: The Wind Waker, I was excited beyond all belief.

So, I rented it (thank God I didn't buy it,) and it was really a let down. The graphics were alright, but not nearly as captivating as OOT, and the storyline was unoriginal. My biggest gripe was the sailing. It was way too time-consuming; I could actually just point the stupid boat and get up and do something else. I finally realized: there are so many better things I could be doing with my time.

I don't recommend this game, unless you just don't care because it is Zelda. Why Nintendo changed what was already a huge success so drastically is beyond me.

Although I had to sneak to the web a few times to figure out some clues (!), this is a fascinating, completely involving game - no, not even a game. An adventure. I felt I was in the boat with my hero as he traveled the world... Naturally, I gave him my name... Why can't you change the gender of the hero/heroine to match what you want to use?
