If your a new player and enjoy the offline versions just be pre-warned you won't find all the objects from the expansion packs in the Sims Online, so if you buy this game and expect to find the fashion stage from Superstar or roller coasters from Makin Magic your will be disappointed, many of the objects from the expansions packs never made it in TSO.
Earning simoleans (in game money) is hard and sometimes frustrating, you study certain skills like cooking etc so you can earn more on money objects, but skilling can be very long and tedious, plus unlike the offline version your skills decay at a alarming rate the more you do.
New content is slow coming, again don't expect over a hundred new objects every 6 or 7 months like in the offline sims expansion packs, maybe 2 every 8 or 9 months if your lucky.
If you love to chat with moving characters then try the game out, if you love the offline sims and expect TSO to let you build a house and funish it right away you will be disappointed,I would recommend getting the game for about 10 bucks if you can and do the free trial if your a big sim lover.
In a word, horrible.

Spend your money elsewhere. I've been playing the offline version of the Sims for a while now, and it's a great game, so my expectations were high when I ordered this game. I've never been so disappointed in any piece of software. It's like Maxxis went out of their way to make this game as boring as possible, and to add insult to injury, you have to PAY to play it, even after spending too much to purchase this piece of garbage in the first place.
Even aside from the uninteresting game play, the game is painful to play because of unreliable servers. This is ridiculous and unacceptable...
Even if the game cost [$$], and online play were [$$], I would NOT recommend this game!
Nothing more than a chat room for teenagers

This game .... I love the Sims and have every expansion pack. I was very excited when this was released, but I was quickly disappointed after playing it the first time. It is nothing but a glorified chat room with teenagers talking about mindless .... Not only does the game ...., but you have to pay $ a month for it! If you are a fan of the Sims and other simulation games you will be very unhappy with this one.

This game is not for children under 18 years of age. for adaults only, It's fun to chat with other players, but it takes forever to make money, and skills. it's ok, but not that great! and it's not worth paying 9.99 a month, you already paid for the game why keep paying to chat when you can chat for free!
Great for some, horrible for others...

The Sims Online (TSO) is pretty much a multiplayer version of the single-player hit. The objects & interactions are pretty much identical. The only difference between this game and the regular Sims games is that your interactions are between real people, and there is no way to quicken the pace of the game. This presents a real problem for people like me, who don't feel like sitting and watching a skill develop for several hours.
Those who enjoyed The Sims may want to reconsider getting this game, purely because you spend so much time doing nothing. Not being able to advance time makes the game extremely tedious.
Those who enjoy roleplaying will, however, find this game to be a valuable experience. The game provides you with what is essentially a really fancy chat interface and rewards you for making friends & gaining skills by giving you new interaction options.

Okay, the sims online and other sims games are all cool, in fact i'm totally obseesed with the game. And it's all fitting together, but BUY THE GAME IN STORES!! I mean~It's worth your money, but SERIOUSLY! You can get it for fifteen bucks at a Wal-Mart! Trust me, It's not worth running your bank account thin.
With so many additions, it's like playing a whole new game!

This review is from an actual player of this newer version of The Sims Online.
This is not a new game, but a new CD with all of the content added since inital release. It only needs to be purchased by new players, to avoid large download patches.
With the addition of pets, and career tracks, and other content into The Sims Online, it's like playing a new game. Since the inital release of the game neighborhoods, stores, clothing racks, and casinos have also been added and greatly increase playability. It never was a "mindless chatroom" and is much less so now, even though the primary aspects of the game are social.
In short - Would I recommend this game to a friend? Definitely, and I have. It is more than worth the $10 it costs (after the rebate) to try the game out free for a month. If you do so, look me up, and I will show you some of the many things that makes TSO such a great game.

I beta-tested the Sims Online. What a disappointment! First I had to download all of the patches, then I once I actually started "playing", there was nothing to do but sit around and talk to strangers! Absolutely boring. Needless to say, I did not pay for the online subscription.
Best game I ever played

I have been playing TSO for almost a year, and I have never gotten bored! I've made a ton of friends in my 11 months of non-stop gaming. Everyday when I log in, I don't know what to expect. That's what kept my attention for so long.
With the new and improved version, there are pets to spend the time with you while you're home, or visit your friend's pets. There are now 3 ways to make simoleons (the currency in TSO) too. When I tested the restaurant and robot job, it made me want to come back. You can still have fun making pizzas, finding your way through mazes or putting your mech skill to use by building gnomes. There are also some new and crazy NPC's. Maids and gardeners are hilarious while they work.
Every house is unique. Some have great designed houses designed by owners, roomies or people who design houses for a sim-living. Great roof arts, too. Inside these unique lots can be anything you can imagine. I've seen golf courses, hotels, restaurants, and a cooking skill lot with a trailer park green area. Be somebody. Else!
The boards are what made me meet a lot of my TSO friends. You get all the info first on the message boards. What's in the latest patch? The boards tell you! It is also fun to read the posts, about the game, your cities, suggestions and a new off-topic board; and post too!
Some people say that TSO is a "mindless chat room." It is a lot more than that! You can gamble your sims hearts out at one of the casinos, listen to one of many radio stations while you play, go to contests, hang out at your friends lot, make simoleons all while your chatting. It's much more than a chat room. Also, every month, there's something new in TSO. Whether it is new features, a contest held by maxis or even something else, there's something new to log into each month.

Ever since the new version of TSO came out I have been addicted. I love the new features, especially the pets. my dog's name is Spike and he is a great watchdog, lol. just kidding he is the sweetest thing and would never do anything to hurt anyone. Well, I've got to get back to my game or I'll be late for work.
