Watch out for drama. You buy this game and at first it's really fun and exciting. Then you realize you are in a game where people are drama ridden without a life trying to find people to find people whom they can get to share their dysfunction with. Next it's the whole game thing... the people who made this have done what they want with it and now don't care. You ask yourself "why am I paying for this?" They hardly ever update and when they do it's full of bugs and frustrating. It usually takes you a day of going "wow cool they added jobs" then on day 2 you say "Okay this sucks... how boring?? when will they do something GREAT or fun" I think they should add games that you can go in and play with another person. For example Euchre with your avatar and another. Oh and on an after thought... if you have a rocky marriage don't get the game. I have seen people actually divorce because they grew to have an affair. Advice number 2...do NOT buy this game if your child is under age. There is sex, solicitors looking to gain your child's information. I was appauled when I went into a room of guys and they had gotten a girls yahoo addy and was watching her naked on cam. She was 14. It's just not kid safe. In other words...this is like a chat room with real people and should be viewed as having the same safety issues that keep me from allowing my children in chat rooms.
PAY CHAT ROOM

That's all this game is. It's nothing but a visual IRC chat room, but with all the ... "Sims" factors. I bought this for my girl friend for Christmas. I installed it and watched her play it for like 10 minutes, she got bored and left. Later on she asked if I could exchange it for another game, so I did. ... DO NOT BUY THIS!
Plain, dull, and time consuming.

Let me start by informing you that I love the Sims (offline) and it's many expansion packs - I own them all! I'm also a big fan of online games. Some of my favorites are Ultima Online, Everquest, Tribes II, and Never Winter Nights.
As you will begin playing this game you will instantly become giddy with excitement and ambitious to test the waters; however, perhaps a week into your experience, you'll realize that the "waters" are knee deep.
Everybody's obsession is skills and money, and you'll soon enough realize that's only because there's nothing else to do in this game. Gaining skills is an excrutiatingly boring process where many sims gather together in order to click on a job item and go afk (away from keyboard) for 10 minutes. Than come back to check up on things and make sure they don't get booted off and go afk again. If you're patient enough (and if you're not, too bad) you'll be one of the few to max their skills and make a measly sallary doing something stupid like hitting pinnatas to collect simoleans or telemarketing - making money, mind you, is similar to the same process as gaining the skills.
When you have enough money you can pay outrageous prices for items your guests will overlook. There's no such thing as originality when it comes to properties, because everyone is so bent on personal gain they couldn't care any less about your quaint little caffe or your club. The only popular properties are those advertising economical wealth and/or perverse themes in their titles: E.g. MONEY MAKAZ, kInKy KaRiSmA, etc.
Maxis's role in this entire system is minimal. Promising the players with revolutionary new concepts and implementations and following up on them with delays and testing sessions that last forever. The game does poorly because there's no fresh content, and there's no fresh content, 'cos the game does poorly.
Some players claim this game is very social; however, the topics that make it into most conversations are all the same. Unlike some online games, noone of the players like to roleplay their sims - giving personalities to their SIMulants and refraining from acknowledging that [the player] is just a person behind the keyboard - so social relationships don't get very far unless the two players "fall in love" and get "married" and "live together" and spend the rest of their sim "lives" "together". But that's cheesey and most of those players are desperate twelve year olds who become fickle with their partner within a few days.
Save your money and sleepless nights for something more rewarding! Even if you are a Sims buff!
One of the worst games ever designed!

I am one of those gullible people who fell for the hype of this game and the experience has taught me wisely that big corporations will throw anything together half heartedly and stick a brand name on it just to profit from unsuspecting fans.
This game is utterly worthless. Its not only pointless and boring, theres really not much of a game to begin with. You basically just chat as you either struggle to build your Sim's skills up, keep your Sim from being depressed, or you work tedious game objects to accumulate meager amounts of money.
Strict rules discourage any sort of creativity and basically most houses look all alike. Its not even a real virtual world as you can't even go downtown. No features from expansions of the offline game are included.
You do the same things everyday as there is not much to do in the game due to the fact that alot of the features have yet to be implemented and activated in the game. And on a cheerful note, players were recently given an extremely long winded excuse on how some features could take months of development and debugging before they are fully featured in the game.
So in essence, you're basically playing a game that isn't even finished!!!
I can understand occasional patches or updates for the purpose of upgrading of the game, but to release a half completed game is not only wrong but just plain greedy.
I'd honestly like to know what the game developers were thinking when they came up with the concept for this game because its obvious they don't understand why the offline version of the game became so successful.
I'm not interesting in paying monthly for what is basically a shallow chatroom environment so I unsubscribed.
Parents should be strongly cautioned as there is alot of indecent and inappropriate things going on in the game that their children should not be involved in. And that sort of content includes everything from cyber sex to players role playing mafia and harrassing other players.
This game is an insult to one's intelligence

Either the game developers didn't do enough research in designing the game or they figured the average person would buy anything half finished as long as it had the Sims name on it.
This is a pathetic excuse for a game. Its more of an animated chatroom than anything else.
The few inside game objects are boring and silly and the objectives to become the most popular and wealthy are shallow and pointless.
The definite set of social/economic rules the game has restricts the player's imagination and creativity.
In closing all I can say is I feel scammed and because of this, I'll likely NEVER purchase a Sims game again. If you're looking for an online version of The Sims, this isn't it! If you're under 21 and addicted to chatting or dont like games in general this game is for you.
I can think of better things to with my money than paying monthly to chat.

I like TSO. It passes the time..ya meet kool people. I love my house and my roomies...After reading a ton of reviews here, I have found most of them to be true (good and bad)but this game is not for everyone and not everyone can afford to play (keeps the riff raff out)...but if you play you play for a reason...and that reason is yours alone. You can be anyone you like..act anyway you like...the choice is yours. It's a shame that some people slame the game and probably a good thing that they no longer play. And as there is good and bad in everything we do ..I choose to see the good in TSO. I think the free trial period gives you more than enough time to assess the game before you have to pay for it. I kinda wonder why people would continue playing when the billing starts if they hate it that much. Anyhow...I like TSO...just try it

Just letting you know there is a MONTHLY PAYMENT of $...a month for this, which is not advertised at all (at the stores they put the price tag stickers over the message that says it costs $.../month, and at amazon.com they put it at the very bottom of the page) so just make sure you know that before you buy it so you don't have to go to all the trouble of returning it like I did!
Horrible!

I have been playing quite awhile but thats because of the attitude I have towards the game. Yes, there are many people who have left the game due to boredom, broken friendships, mafias etc. However the game is what you make it. One thing you will miss most about the offline game compared to this one is the option to increase time speed. Skilling is not fun, especially if you dont have enough skill locking points. Money making can be boring depending on the house you are at. Many owners choose to do trivia or have contests to promote more fun. It is frustrating starting out with only 10k. Not the mention the horrible lag. It doesnt make sense to put a limited population on the popular cities as someone has mentioned before especially since their servers are half working at the time anyway. Don't get me wrong, I have been playin this game for almos two years now. I like it but I will be honest about the reason why I remain...for the friends I have met. however, everyone will not have the same online experience as myself. Whoever the person was that suggested getting the trial version first, I agree. This game is not for everyone so dont waste your money on something you are unsure about. I also agree with the person who said its nothing like the offline game. So dont go in expecting it to be anything like it. So that this doesnt get too long or boring, I will conclude with this: Get the trial version and see for yourself. Everyone on this board is correct, though conflicting views. So save yourself some money and get the trial first........
Large Graphical Chat Room

As a beta player from the beginning I have seen many changes occur within the Sims Online game. Some good, some not so good. Overall, if you just enjoy the career paths and designing your own property, playing with pets, etc. then you would do best to stay with the offline version of this game. If you enjoy chatting with others and making online friends, then purchase The Sims Online for it isn't really a game but the largest graphical chat room out there.
I give it 3 stars because it used to have a few objects that were mini games within the chat room. The maze was a fun one, a challenge that my friends and I enjoyed. As with all good things, it seems they do not last - hackers created programs around them so Maxis has disabled that. Before that, they took the code pay outs and changed them. I keep my multiple accounts with TSO simply because of the friends I have created.
If you want chatting and freindship purchase the Sims Online, if you want goals and actaul game play..... go elsewhere for the Sims Online will not provide that function.
