University Drops-Out

I am a HUGE fan of The Sims. There was no question that I would buy this expansion for The Sims 2. I must say that I thought the price was too high for an expansion, and it comes with an ad for a future expansion. I installed the expansion properly, but my sims can never enter the dorms to actually begin the game. It just sits there and loads forever. I tried it with my system at normal, and also with all my startups disabled. Same result, so we know it is not a background program causing the problem. The manual says I can email tech support, but of course there is no email address in the manual and I could not find it on their website. I read the FAQ's online and tried all their solutions. Nothing. I will not pay long distance charges to call tech support. They were awful, rude and unhelpful last time. My system exceeds the requirements in every way. I have an hp pavillion 724c, with a 2.53 ghz processor, 1 gig of RAM, an ATI All-in-Wonder 9700 Pro and about 380 gigs of free hard drive space. I also have all the latest drivers. My recomendation is not to buy the expansion until they put out patches or solve these problems. With shipping I am out nearly forty bucks for something that doesn't work which isn't even a game, but rather an exapnsion. They obviously did not bother to do enough beta-testing, and put out a product with great flaws. I want so much to use this exapnsion and send my sims to college and all that. I have not requested a refund yet. I still have my hopes that EA will do the honourable thing and make this work. I will NEVER pre-order a Sims 2 expansion again. I will wait until Nightlife is out and the bugs are fixed before buying the next one. See? They know how loyal we SimFanatics are and they took advantage of us.

While I love this game, there are some bugs....

Basically, I agree with the rave reviews the Sims University is getting, however, there are some problems that I have encountered while playing the game; problems that result in the lost of a Sim. For example, one Sim I was playing tried to move from a Dorm to the Sorority house, but was lost in the transfer. I think this happened because I left one of the sisters talking to her on the phone. She couldn't be on the phone and outside the house at the same time, so she disappeared. Because she was the process of being transferred to a new house, she was wiped out of the game. I didn't even see her in the Campus Directory! There are other situations where you can get in trouble while changing residence that I won't go into here.

Another problem is that sometimes a person of the opposite sex gets stuck in the wrong dormatory bathroom. This can happen easily with a maid that a student has befriended. Once the maid is off-duty, she/he can't get out of the bathroom that bars his/her gender. I do not know of a way to get them out, and they really shouldn't be stuck in there to begin with. There are other situations where a Sim can be lost, mostly in the process of changing residence (including moving back to town). I find it hard to believe that these problems were not detected and fixed before the product was shipped.

The problems I have described are only with the University expansion, and don't apply to the basic game. As annoying as they are, you can learn to play around them (make sure the maid is not in the bathroom if you want him/her to hang around). I love this game, but bugs like these are really inexcusable.

The bugs ruin it

I purchased University when it first came out. For the first month or so the game worked just as it was supposed. While some people found it boring, I actually enjoyed the new University interactions. It was hardly something that would make someone gasp and go "Wow, how awesome!" but it did add to the more everyday gameplay, a style that I prefer.

However, my enjoyment ended when the bugs began cropping up. I play a semi-clean game. I download custom content, but only that which is made using Maxis' BodyShop and HomeCrafter, which were designed to work with the game. I do not use new meshes. I only use one cheat, move_objects, which I use to removed bugged objects. And I do not use any third-party hacks. Which means they were not the cause of the bugs I have experienced.

This game, in fact, is severely flawed for those who really play the game to its fullest extent. For those with large neighborhoods with many generations, you might find that your students will no longer properly advance through their final exams. Which means, the actual University portion of the University expansion pack doesn't work. The theme of the game itself is so poorly programmed that it doesn't work. And this is only the start of the bugs, but I won't go into anymore details.

If you don't plan on pressing the limits of the games with generations and large families, then you should be fairly safe getting this game and enjoying it, it is quite fun in general. However, if you're a fan of family trees or gene-tracking through generations, you might want to wait until the problems get fixed, either through Nightlife or through the stand-alone patch that Maxis is dragging their feet to create.

I have repeatedly tried to install the EP, to no avail. It hangs up at 67% (TS2UPD.exe) and uninstalls. Their BBS indicatres that the problem is prevelant. After a 20 minute hold on a long distance call to tech support, I just gave up. Have been unable to contact them in any form. I purchased the program as a pre-release from Electronic Arts and am refusing to pay for its return. Fortunately, it was paid for by credit card so payment can be witheld. If you decide to buy it before all the bugs are out, buy locally so it can be returned.

Fun..

I would say that this game can get a little boring after a while, because it does take a long time to graduate. Here's a hint: Its the easiest and most fun gameplay if you only have one person to play with. You can focus more and get their grades higher. One of the only things I don't like is how you have to go to class EVERY SINGLE DAY. There is like, never any time to do anything else, because all you get to do is study, write term papers, and do assignments! But overall, it is still pretty fun, and it is a recommended game by me!

It's ok

Well this game is really fun when you first get it but once your sim finshs collage you kind of know whats going to happen to the next sim you make. All you really do is go to collage,do homework, and write term papers. Its REALLY HARD to get your sim into the "Greek House" and if you do get in, you have to play as all of the sims.Once they are done with collage you play as a regular sim but with better jobs. There clothes for young adults are really bad!!For the girls there is only 8 new clothes,(estamated)and the furniture is ok.If your sim drops out, its like you play as regular sim as if you don't have the expanision pack. Its hard to fall in love and finsh collage at the same time.Well thats all I got!!!!!

If only college was faster!

I agree with the person before me. It's really exciting when you first get it, but after that it is soooooo boring! It takes so much time to play college I find it a chore. I want to graduate so that all of the new jobs will be avaliable (the new jobs are actuelly cool) but I don't want to suffer through college! I will say, however, that the new hairstyles, clothing, and jobs make up for all that, and although college is extremely tedious, it's better to have the option than not. Just be warned that it is not as fun as it looks.

Sum it up in one word, "WOW!"

What an amazing game. It just keeps getting better and better. Maxis and EA Games really know how to make an excellent simulation game. The Sims 2 University plays very much like the first, but now you can go to college. Your sims can join households very much like real life. You can work hard to get your sim to an excellent grade level, majoring in drama, math, sciences, history, etc. Just make sure your computer has space to spare, beacause it is a very big game that is well worth the 30 dollars!

This is the best game ever! I was over at my friends house one day and she told me she had Sims 2 University. (I am a huge fan of Sims and EA Games) We played it and made ourselfs and we didn't get that far but we played nasty pranks and also succeed in term and homework papers. I really hope you take advantage of this game! It is totally worth the money!

way too many bugs!
