Urban Madness!

Sim City 4 is a giant world of ongoing fun. I start playing at 4:00, and "10 minutes" later it's 7:00! You can control the landscape too! Sure it takes time (and hard work) to build a giant city, but you should expect that from a reality company like Maxis. The true greatest "create-your-own" game of all time.

It would be fun. . .

Sim City 4 justp lain fails to run after a certain point. It will eat up all of your system resources. I have a nice computer system and I'm very good with computers, but this game just seems as if it is not finished. I'd buy GTA or Mafia instead of this title.

Maxis does it again

many people who ever played the old school Sim City 2000 or even before that know how addicting this game is. now while this game isnt out yet, its safe to say that maxis and EA have done a lot to make this game much better from its predecessor. the graphics are incredible which is surprising given its system reqs. it only requires a P3 500 MHZ or equivelent. 16 meg of video ram. thats not bad at all and the game loks awesoem from the videos ive seen. The ability to control almost any aspect of your city and be able to tell specifically what is wrong with your city and what it needs is whats going to make this game so good. anyone who likes the SimCity series will most diffinately need to get this game.

great game

the game is better and worse than expected... it's very fun to play. you need a newer computer for it to preform well and have good graphics though. i tried it on one system with 850 mhz and 512 mb-ram and it preformed poorly, i think i may need a newer graphics card. it runs wonderfull on my 2 ghz system though.

BUYER BEWARE!

I have a relativly new computer (about 1 1/2 years old) and I was so excited about this game! When I got it, I had a horrible time trying to install it. So I finally called costumer service and come to find out you need a specific memory card that is only standard in new computers. I don't remember reading anything about that. I'm very disapointed!

A few new things from version 3000 and a few left out

The basic city building is mostly unchanged from version 3(000).
Most of the new stuff in Version 4 is extra stuff such as having "Sims" people that can be tracked through the game. The new features are laid out explained good in the manufacturers stuff and the other reviews.

The graphics are preatty cool. There are some little things that make the game more playable. The keyboard shortcuts are now documented. It is possible to build something over an existing building and have it "auto buldoze". Holding the mouse over a building gives lots of information; easier than having to click. When building a public building like a police station or school the map shows existing facilities and their effective range.

Downsides: There is no Save-As function. A given city can only be saved with the original name so there isnt the possibility of trying out something experimental and then be able to go back. I think it is possible to copy the city to a different region so there may be a back door way to duplicate a file, but "save as" would be a lot more convienant. Similarly there is no auto-save. I had the game crash twice and lost several hours of building. So save a lot.

I had a lot of troubles balancing the budget. I guess with a new city build slow and wait on expensive improvements. Also there arn't very many prebuilt cities. The few included pre-built cities are difficult to find, it is necessary to open up the different pre-built regions. They say more cities can be downloaded, I didnt try this yet. However its not like earlier versions where you can open up lots of famous cities and start reordering them.

an utterly mediocre game

The only improvement over the previous editions is graphics, everything else is the same or made worse, like cumbersome menus and lack of customization features. If you played SC3000 and got bored with it, stay away from this one, there is nothing new here.

No reason to upgrade to this from SimCity 3000

After a week of playing this game, my general opinion of it is very poor. I have seen very little different from SimCity 3000 and the game CRAWLS on my PIII 800MHz/512MB machine. Also, you spend half of your time dispatching fire engines in the city, which is barely fun the first time you do it. It is down right annoying the 50th time.

Not only that, if I play the game straight for about 40 minutes it will crash to the desktop. Wish I had never bought this game, and just installed my old SimCity 3K for a little while. I just hope a patch will improve the speed/crashing problems.

Don't buy!

I got this game for christmas, along with a brand new computer with dual p4 3.0 processors, and 512mb of RAM, and an ATI radeon 9600 pro graphics card w/ Directx 9.0 compatibility. I installed the game, which took a while, and was amazed by the graphics and attention to detail. I was, however, dissapointed whith the landscaping tools. It was very hard to put in fine elements such as coaslines and bays because the effects of tools span across such a wide area.

I worked around this, and was doing wery well with my first city, the controls where easy to use, similar to SC 3000, but the roads that are automatically put in with zones make it hard to put in an effective road system. Without reason, evereything froze up, and the sound turned to annoying prolonged beeps.

I restarted my computer, and the computer acted like I didn't even have a disk drive, meaning that whenever I tried to open or access the drive, it would say "drive D: cannot be found" so, I uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, you name it to fix the problem. I got my drive back but the game still produced it's incessant beeping. Great game, but i think it's coding and compatibility needs to be improved. It could be my computer, but these are my experiences.
