This new version, Sim City 4 is very similar to SimCity 3000, looks like they just changed the interface. The game is also very slow even on my new computer (2ghz). I recomend you buy it when prices come down.

was disappointed

i loved playing sim city 3000 unlimited and couldnt wait for sim city 4 but as with the sims, ea has made it so complicated that it was not fun at all. I have played all the sim games and am trully disappointed that they have taken the fun out of the games.

Sim City 4 - Disappointing

It wouldn't run on a high end Dell Notebook. I did get it to run on a two year old Dell Notebook. It is difficult to learn and seems to have many useless features like putting wild life into terrains who run around for about a minute and disappear. Control of the terrain is almost impossible because you can control individual blocks. I finally gave up in despair and gave the game away.

I recently bought Sim City 4. I had desperately wanted the game. It does not take a while to get used to , as I play it virtually every time I sit on the computer!

I found that it was exciting to watch your city develop, but when the population reaches approximately 10,000, you run out of money and your Sims start flocking out of your city. Also, when I build a city, there is a 'No Road Connection' sign appear on vacant blocks of land, although I have already made a Road Connection to the vacant blocks of land. Also, when I run out of money, the Advisors keep annoyingly whingeing and complaining about Taxes and my Expenditure.

The Terraforming tools are fabulous, as you can make Cliffs, Mesas, Mountains, Seed Forests, and Gouge Valleys.

I only occasionaly place Sims in my city, as they often Whinge about things like lack of Power Plants, but really, there are the more efficient, cleaner and safer Wind Farms. Sometimes my advisor pops up saying there is a Core Meltdown at the Power Plant when I don't even have a Nuclear Power Plant in my City. Another problem is, you cannot manage your Finance and Budget properly. The Advisors seem to take more control of your City than you do. I even take out $2,000,000 loans if I have to. Also, the annoying 'No Job' sign on Residential Units are very annoying, as I already have Commercial and Industrial areas. Also, I have to place Five Elementary Schools in the one City, that is why some things are a waste of time or money.

A lot of people who I have heard of, seem to complain that the game runs extremely slow, even on State-of-the-Art Computers, and the system requirements. That is probably because their computer is jam-packed with Programs and Software. I was hanging out to purchase this, and I sure done myself good. I also have The Sims, not as good as Sim City though!

A little disappointed

Sim City 4

A Great, and the only, city simulation game for the computer. This latest installment boasts the best graphics and special effects in the series, as well as more detail in the area of micromanagement.

The Good:

Graphics, sound, music, dynamic visualizations, disasters

The Bad:

Awful terrain editing machine, railroads do not operate properly, streets and railroad tracks cannot bridge over each other or cross at odd angles on the city grid (although this problem should be corrected in Rush Hour), seaports and rail connections are a pain to get working properly, city areas are much smaller than in previous versions.

Overall a great game, but not much better than Sim City 3.

Amazing Game

Sim City 4 is excellent. It is missing some of the great features of the older SimCitys but they have been replaced with amazing detail and much more realistic gameplay. This game is pure strategy. It goes well and beyond the simple zoning and random placing of utilities and what not. This game takes actual thinking and strategy which makes it so much better. The game creates a real challenge and can be played in so many different ways then the previous versions. The only problem i have seen with this game is that is takes a big toll on the speed of your computer and getting your actual city on its feet is quite a task. But thats just part of having to create that perfect strategy and using your wits. Great job Maxis it keeps getting better every year.

looks like a tremendous improvement...

I recently took a gander at the screenshots for this latest version (not yet released) of Simcity. Among the many noticeable improvements include switching from day to night/ night to day, more disasters including volcanoes, realistic weather patterns, more realistic-looking and detailed buildings, more variety of zoning options/ building types, and for the first time in the series, you can zone and construct buildings on sloping terrain. Of course, we will all have to wait until the title is released some time down the road to see the real improvements for ourselves.

One of the best games I'd already played

Sim City 4 (and its expansion pack Rush Hour) are very cool! Simply amazing. I was also a Sim City 3000 fanatic and I was expecting much about the new release. Well, it was better than I thought it would be. The graphics are astonishing and the entertaiment given by hours planning and developing your cities are incredible.
This game also offers a much higher challenge, one of the main problems in SC3000 was already solver, that was that it was relatively easy to build a city and develop. Nope, in SC4 you must have complete control over the budget.
I see some small problems, like the size of your cities (why we not have the option to size the cities in a region in a new region?), the high price of the game, some things could be added to the game and, mainly, the necessity of a super-computer to play the game (512mb RAM recommended if you are playing in a big city with more than 300 thousand inhabitants), but sure the game its worth all these problems.
Having patience and caution in planning your city, you won't regret the fact that you spent hours, days, weeks, even months to do a big and nice city.

SimCity 4 is GREAT!

SimCity 4 is great! I admit, it's been a bit more difficult for me to start off compared to the previous games in the series, but that just makes the game more interesting.

I was disappointed about there not being auto-disasters in the game. There are mini-disasters which kind of make up for it, but it just seems strange not having an earthquake or something which used to happen occassionally. The fires happen and destroy things if you let them go long enough, but the mass destruction is no longer a chaotic force - it's you! Good for the people who wanted more control over disasters; Bad for people who liked random disasters. I dreamed of having a city built at the foot of a volcano, but there is no option to have it randomly active... it's dormant until you tell it to erupt.

If you're looking for micromanagement... this is the game to have. 9 different tax categories; local adjustments available for each individual service building; more building types to plan for; different kinds of airports and train stations; and the list goes on.

Overall... I'd highly recommend this game to anyone who has enjoyed SimCity in the past or any similar development/strategy games.

best Sim City series game this far

I have been a Sim City fan since SC2K (remember archologies?). This game has fulfilled everything I wished SC2K AND SC3K had: great terrain generator, beautiful graphics, and almost extinct Lick's Disease (repeating building types), more realistic zoning (commercial office vs. commercial services).
If you are new to Sim City you should be aware this game is not for everyone and you might not find it "fast" enough. For the rest of us, this game far surpasses all of its predecessors.
