Techie: Your machine has to be top flight to take advantage of this game. I have a 1 gig processor and top of the line geforce4 graphics card, and performance is an issue. I do have all the graphics options maxed out though, and I keep intending to turn it down some.

The Manual: I always buy strategy guides, so I don't look at the manual. The strategy guide is a must have for this game. There's a lot of choices and a lot of interaction and without the strategy guide, you will just be flailing around guessing. As an example, you'd never guess how helpful ranger stations are, even in a city, but they are. They are yimby and they have a huge radius of effect.

4: It's the fouth in a series, how could it be anything other than a rehash? Three was a rehash, 4 is a re-think. This one adds the concept of regions, which you won't understand without the strategy guide. This one re-thinks the transportation scheme, and the way demand works. Rewards are handled differently, and so on and so on. It's new. Honest.

In summary: I love this game. It's huge and complex. If you see complexity as something to complain about, you'll hate it.

what can i say ,at first i was excited about this game but as soon as i started playing it i new i was going to load simcity 3000 back on.the graphics are great but what really is stupid is how hard it is to make any money ,ive tried everything lowering on funding on all services, making toxic waste dumps nothing works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you cant really get any deals with your neighboors as you have to make your own and all this gets confusing.what went wrong?if only they had improved on some things and left the [other] things for example the budget problems.if they had changed only the graphics and the rewards etc this would have got a 5/5

Addicting!

I have been playing simcity for years, probably about 7 or so years. Its the best game by far. I highly recommended it to those who like simulation games and the thought of building a city.

I bought it when it came out, and haven't got tired of it yet. Definately the most realistic yet, the detail is amazing when zoomed to full view. Very, very challenging game- money goes out fast. Cities can be more interdependent then ever- sims will work in one city and live in the other. Characters from the Sims can be moved in (even pets from unleashed) and can tell you how they like the place. Also, you can put in your own mp3's in the music folder and they will play in the game (sweet!). The controls are much like the ones in The Sims.
As far as system requirnments go, don't use this on an older computer or if you have less then 128 megs ram- i have p4 1.7 with 256 rambus and a 64mb graphics card, and even then it still can be a little slow changing the zoom (all that wonderful detail).
I haven't noticed any bugs so far- there is a patch out now but there wasn't any problem before that. Runs smooth, once you buy it you can't put it down! Definately recommend to any fan of Sim City or the Sims.

SimCity 4 Outstanding City Simulator

Excellent simulator, great graphics, enthralling gameplay. Needs a high-end system for best results. My 2.2 GHz processor, 0.5 G RAM, and 32 Meg graphics card seemed barely adequate at times. New SimCity players, like me, will find themselves uncertain about how to proceed at first, but after crashing and burning a couple of cities you begin to see how to make a city work, though not necessarily how to make a city profitable! The documentation is terse and the program has no indexed reference help files as such, all help being contextual in popups and tooltips. The Mayor's tutorial is very brief as is the terraforming tutorial, but in both cases the excellent interface really makes a tutorial unnecessary. If you are new to SimCity, be aware that region play is necessary in SimCity 4 if you want a city that can turn a profit. As you build your primary city, also build other communities around it so that each city mutually benefits from the others through business deals and increased trade and commerce. Wonderful game at the time of its first release, it is hard to imagine what it will become with enhancements, add-ons, and patches ... speaking of which ... it would be nice in the first patch if the "weaknesspays" cheat were increased to something absurdly comfortable. New players will wear their fingers out trying to type "weaknesspays" Shift Enter fifty to one hundred times per game!

Too much detail/Older computers not compatible

I bought this game via pre order. I installed it and during the tutorials it crashes my game, why, because to run it I would need to buy a new $... video card! I did get to play some and there are just too many options, functions, etc. that you have to do in order to play this game. You have God Mode, Mayor Mode and Sim Mode which can only be played if you own The Sims. The graphics are great, very detailed, but everything is really small because of the massive detail. The gameplay, interface are very different from SimCity3000 and I didn't like it. I was very dissapointed and am sending it back. All in all, too much detail, slow, too much to do to actually build a city! Too much like work and not enough fun!

GREAT GRAPHICS/HUGE SYSTEM OVERHEADS

The new version of the greatest sim of all time has ravishing on-screen graphics and a greatly improved user interface that could and should have gone into SC3000. However, there is little new here apart from further complexity, and you should check the minimum system requirements before you part with your hard-earned cash - this eats up processor time and memory. Personally, I won't be buying this or any other SC update until designer Will introduces the properly rendered 3D fly-through feature that has been talked about for so many years without ever hitting the streets; it's no longer possible to say that platform limitations rule it out.

Sim City 4 - Fancy Graphics But Not as Fun as the Original

When I saw the ads for the newest Sim City (Sim City 4), I have to admit being pretty amazed by the graphics. Sadly, however, the graphics are about all that I found impressive about this newest version.

You have several regions to select from, and they can be altered via "God Mode". Once the real city building starts, though the game drags. I seemed to only be able to build on a few zones without exhausting my supply of funds. I spent more time watching a dwindling supply of money as opposed to building a city. (Once over a century went by and my city remained essentially the same).

The first version of the Original Sim City 1 that I purchased several years ago was enhanced with video clips from the various advisors and news teams. It was fun, challenging, yet quite doable. Less fancy game graphics were more than compensated for by a engrossing and fascinating game scenario.

No video segments (or even audio voice overs) in this new version. Gone are the pre-made scenarios. Also gone is the fun. It looks like the new region setup is designed for online multiplayer options but I won't be playing.

I think I rate this one about 2 stars, since there is some fun in the original setup using "God Mode" and in destroying the city once I get bored (less than an hour). I think rather than wasting my time playing this game, I'll go ahead and de-install it and go back to Sim City 1.

I have a Pentium 4 1.8GHz, 256MB RDRAM
Video: 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce 3 Ti 200

This game plays very slow. After playing slow for an hour, it freezes. It's annoying and unplayable. Don't bother. There's nothing new in the game that's worth the pain of watching it freeze every time you play it.

I installed it and go to start the game and the CD ROM spins, but nothing happens. I go straight back to the desktop. Even used the online support, but its no help. I have plenty of PC power to run the game, but it won't go. In reading the Amazon reviews, it looks like I'm not the only person with major techno-problems. This game is a big fat pig. Its so big your computer will choke.
