A Great Gaming Surprise

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4

This game proves that games don't have to be violent to be great.
It's highly addictive and entertaining. The clock never stops ticking; the days never stop flying by. The title doesn't make much sense, exept that all of the village inhabitants are animals
and you are the only human(unless you invite a friend or family member into your village). I reccomend this game to all ages,(children and adults) and would suggest buying it instead of just renting it first.

play forever

Find yourself trapped in redundancy

What happens when you find yourself trapped in a world where animals can speak? Animal Crossing is that world. Animal Crossing offers some of the most innovative game play Nintendo has to offer, but was very poorly executed.

Animal Crossing is a neat, little game where you enter a town run by animals. The animals CAN speak English. Believe it or not, Nintendo actually programmed the game to phonetically sound out everything being said. This means that if you close your eyes, you can still understand the dialog, even though it has been sped up to the speed of the Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. All the animals talk like this, with various tonal differences. Ivan the Russian bear speaks with a deep voice, while the Cat (I do not remember her name) speaks in a high pitched voice. This is called Animalese. Animalese is great because of the phonetic speech, but can become quickly annoying. There is also a silent voice, where text just appears and an option where you get the standard beep tone every time a word appears on-screen. For the duration of my play, I left it on Animalese, to see if Nintendo kept the speech consistent through the game. Believe it or not, they did.

The game has an interesting beginning. Before you see your character, you are asked questions by a cat on a train. The cat will ask you your name, which becomes the name you will be addressed by through out the game. Then you are asked what you think of your name. By answering "It is a good name", the cat assumes you are a boy. Alternatively, by answering "It is a cute name", the cat thinks you are a girl. You then receive a chance to correct the cat if he guesses your gender incorrectly because of the option you chose. Once you exit the train, a Raccoon named Tom Nook will show you to a group of four houses. These houses are possible starting points for you. Once you select a house, the Raccoon tells you that you owe him for the house. At this point, you spend most of your time paying for the house, rather than having fun. Initially, you begin paying for your house by running errands for Nook. He then sets you free to find your own way of running errands. You must pay Nook at least 1000 bells (bells is the currency) a week. If you do not like being indebt, get used to it in this game.

The real fun begins, once Tom Nook sets you loose. You have more time to explore the town. Nintendo had the foresight to employ the Game Cube's internal clock to have an effect on play. The game is in real time, and stuff changes even while you are not playing, though, you should not leave your Game Cube on all day and night. The townsfolk have their set schedules that they follow. Most of them stay near their houses in the night hours, but may walk the town during the day time. Even the post office changes clerks, depending on the time you are playing the game. You must also remember to not play the game too long. If you keep interacting with the townsfolk all day and all night, they will not get their much needed sleep and will tend to be very curt with you the next time you turn on your Game Cube. This can be very amusing, but upset neighbors can really impede your progress.

The environments are well portrayed. Overall, Nintendo kept a child-like feel to Animal Crossing. The graphics are simple and the environments are easy to navigate. The size of the town is rather small, so depending on your preference, this can either be a positive or a negative to the overall game. I am personally pleased with the ability to customize the inside of your house, though you spend so little time inside, that it becomes as useless as the room feature in Pokémon G/S. My only issue with the towns is when you are running errands, sometimes, you need to run from one end, to the exact opposite end of the town. This not only takes time, but can get tedious.

Animal Crossing supports the Gameboy Advance E-Reader. With the E-Reader, you can add furniture and other items to your inventory. This is a neat idea. Personally, I enjoy little antics and innovations like this, but in Animal Crossing, you can even swipe the E-Reader classic games and be able to play them on your Nintendo (if you buy one from Tom Nook). The E-Reader cards are an incurred cost (as you actually have to go out an buy them), but prove to be more like the Pokémon Trading Card game, short lived.

I found Animal Crossing to be a very repetitive game. You spend most of your time running errands and interacting with the townspeople. This tends to get very repetitive. If I wanted to work on my relationships with others, I would play The Sims (PC and PS2) by Electronic Arts. As for the Gameboy Advance E-Reader interaction, I find this to be a more costly expense than it is worth. In all seriousness, who really wants to go out and spend more money on cards that they will only use for Animal Crossing, then throw away when they get rid of their Nintendo Game Cube? My largest complaint about Animal Crossing is that by the time I got a shovel, I could not use it the way I wanted. If I could have, the town's population would drop to 1, and there would be dirt mounds near each villager's house.

Overall, Animal Crossing finds the same replay value as Harvest Moon. You either enjoy the repetition, or you hate it. Because of its simple nature, I can see Animal Crossing appealing to players under 12. For more intelligent players or players who do not work in factories, I recommend staying away from this game. Needless to say, I did not like Animal Crossing.

Very Addictive

I love this game. When I first heard about this, I thought the game was on the silly side, however, I found it to be totally fun. This isn't a deep adventure, but rather a task-oriented game, where the tasks mean that you will have more animals come to live in your town. Buying items, selling and trading is a big part of the game. All I can say is that once you try aAnimal Crossing, you'll want to play more.

OK, NOT GREAT

When I saw commercials and advertisements for this game, it looked so unbelievably cool. I had to wait a while to get it, and when I finally did, I was psyched. This game was the best! You could do so many different things! Unfortunately, after about a month or so, this game got pretty repetative. So, I stopped playing it for a couple months. When I went back on, every villager in my town was totally flippin out at me. That's one thing that makes the real world time take away from the game. This game is so addicting that you play it every day for hours until you've played out your interests. Overall, I'd rate it a C+. This game is BEST PLAYED IN SHORT BURSTS!!! Don't buy it unless you have way too much time on your hands, or you're in college.

Animal crossing RULES!

This game is very fun. But I admit that it is boring at some points, like when you have to work for Tom Nook. But there is still a lot to do! Like paying off your dept. You can get a 3 story house. You can get a basment, a HUGE main room, and decently big second floor. After you finish your jobs for Nook, you should get your tools. There are four diferent tools that you can get. A shovel to dig gyroids and fossils, a fishing rod to catch fish, which is very profitable since some fish, like arrowana, are worth a lot, a net, to catch bugs with, and an axe, which breaks after a while. But you'll need some money to buy these tools. What should do is go down to the seashore and collect shells. Pretty soon you will have 500 bells, which is enough to buy one of the tools I talked about. I would get a fishing rod first. Now, Nook's shop, over time, will get ugraded. The first shop size is Nook's Cranney, which only sells a little bit and is about the same size as your oringinal house. After you buy or sell 25,000 bells, Nook will expand his store to Nook in' Go, which is a little bit bigger than before and looks a lot more like a supermarket. Then, you sell or buy another 65,000 bells, Nook in' Go will expand to Nookway, which is about twice the size of what Nooks in' Go. Finally, after you sell and buy 150,000 AND a villager from another town buys something from Nook's shop to get Nookinton's. Nookinton's is HUGE! It's two story buiding and sells over 20 things! This game is really fun and to whom said:". This game is much worse than games that are so boring or easy that you sleep while you play through them. It is indeed torturous because of the noises that the animals make while they talk, so that you cannot sleep through the game while you play it. The answer to this problem is simply do not play it." There is this nifty thing before you start playing, when one of the villagers is talking to you. The villager will ask you if you are ready to go. Say know and will see a menu where there are options like create a new town and setting the time. Choose setting and change the way the animals talk. You can choose from bebelese, animalese, and silence. So ha. I loved this game and you will too.

Animal Crossing provides a new world for players to be able to explore and experiment with. This is a great game. It is loads of fun that last you more than just a week...it can last you months on end of either trying to collect some kind of furniture, making money, chilling with your villagers, or trying to finish your museum colleciton. The game has much to offer in terms of things to do. A must have for all!

Pattern Making

One of the coolest things in this crazy, addictive game is how you can create your outfits. At the Albe Sister's Tailor Shop, (run by twin sister porcipines Mable and Sable) you can either buy designs that they have made, or you can create your own! By using the pattern maker, you can create designs and colors, and then wear them! You can also use the designs as the front of your house's door, as the walls of your house, or on signs. Plus, animals might like your designs and start wearing it. So, you might spark a fashion craze! If you link your GameBoy Advance to it, you can go to this secret island, (which you get to name) and meet a islander who lives there. Here's the cool part, the island has a flag. So, you can use your designs as the island's flag! Plus, you can download the pattern maker from the Able Sister's store onto your GameBoy, and then create your patterns on the go on your Advance! Then, all you do is plug the GameBoy into the GameCube and then download your patterns onto the game and then use them! You get to make your patterns on the go! It's soooo cool! So it you don't have this game, GO BUY IT NOW!!!!

P.S. If you are a really big Animal Crossing fan, go to animalcrossingcommunity.com. It's this awsome website that is entirely on the 2 different Animal Crossing games. You can chat on boards, use the special pattern maker, (and have them judged by other members) and just do nothing but Animal Crossing! Plus, you can create your own user page, and show other members your town, character, island, and islander name, show what fish, fossils, insects, and paintings you have in the museum, and share your town tune! Plus, you get your own bullatin board where you can post stuff just like in the game! So if you love Animal Crossing, join animalcrossingcommunity.com!! You won't be dissapointed, is rules!
