If you liked Civ or Medieval Total War, you are gonna love this, no question. I am not going to bore you with a long review besides that simple comment, I am sure there will be far more detailed reviews you can go to if you need that. The only advice i *will* give is don't get the strategy guide, it is not like the guide for Medieval was. Yes, it has the unit stats all conveniently presented but there is no listing of the possible vices/virtues to be gained, nor for retinue...I don't even think it even mentioned anything about the wonders either!

Truly, Rome: Total War is one of the best computer games ever made. I can say this with reasonable confidence, as I've played most all real-time strategy and turn-based strategy games. The graphics are nothing less than stunning, with highly detailed units instead of the sprites of other Total War games. The zoom function has been better developed, enabling you to truly go down onto the battlefield with your troops. The distinctiveness and eccentricities of the different civilizations has been rigorously duplicated, providing immense depth and scope to the game. The music is well done and matches the game well, whether with bombastic music for the heat of battle, or quiet singing in Latin as you ponder your next move. In conclusion, the game is wonderful and highly recommended.

I have been playing real time strategy games since Command and Conquer and and turn based games since civilization. The pace in the demo of RTW was not very fast as the front line usally holds for several lines as u attempt to flank your enemy. If you are worried about this game requiring twitch skill "the ability to move the mouse fast and accuratly" it is not and if someone is that bad with a mouse they should stick to turn based rpg's. Now that the demo is released i can say without a doubt that this is a superb strategy game even without dipolmacy. This game has great graphic smooth controls and alot of strategy. So if your looking a good RTS look no further.
Nothing but awesome

Okay im not a child, i didnt feel like filling that stuff out. I am enrolled in a advanced history course in college and this game brings the art of war to life! It allows you to create empires to your own imagination and it gives you a good glimpse about Roman History. Some of the units are not accurate, BUT, there are several downloads from Total War websites that give you a more accurate outlook. This game is incredible and its worth every penny!

The game as many of you have said is great - but for one cardinal fault - it's full of crashes & freezes. I have experienced it myself and I thought it was my system, but after going thru the forum at the RTW official website - I find that a whole lot of people are complaining about it crashes & freezes.
I'm very dissapointed at Creative Assembly for not acting to solve this issue and can dare say that I've wasted my money buying this game cos its just so damn frustrating to play!! (with all the freezes and such).
A great game, great pity too that it's freezing all the time.
Game of the Year

As the title suggests, I feel that this is the game of the year. The gameplay is truly amazing.
As the patriarch of a Roman Family (or the leader of several other available nations), you guide your faction to control of the ancient world. There are three Roman factions, your family, as well as two others. Each faction has a bonus particular to them.
You report to the Senate (which actually plays along as a faction to itself) which controls the city of Rome. The Senate will send you on a variety of missions. These could be as simple as blockading a port, or as hard as conquering a neighboring region.
You have family members, who are either sons and daughters of your patriarch and his immediate family, or worthy laymen who you have adopted into the family. These family members act as Generals or Governors. If they are based in a city, they act as Governors, and if they are with an army, they act as the General. Family members provide a massive influence to an army in battle, as well as to the governance of a city. Some men are born leaders, others as genius financial managers. As they progress, they gain positive and negative attributes based on their deeds. They are by far the most important aspect of the game.
But a family member can become so powerful as to attract the attention of the Senate. If a General becomes so well-known that the Senate fears he could march on Rome and declare himself dictator, they may just demand that you kill him. If you refuse, the Senate will declare war on your faction, and the other two families will attack you.
The end goal, of course, is to take Rome and control the entire ancient world.
The strategy involved in moving your armies about the world is advanced, and the battles are innovative. You do not actually take part in the fighting as in a first person action game. You command the army. You tell a variety of different units (which are built in your cities, based on what you have built), to go here or there. You can perform many different manuevers. Hold the enemy unit in place with a group of infantry, and charge their rear with a well-maneuvered cavalry unit to destroy them completely, and so on.
This game is truly amazing. The only letdown was the ending, a simple video commemorating your conquering of Rome. There has been a lot of mention of the saving bug, but it really did not affect my play at all.
