I originally got this game, not because I thought I'd love it, but because I wanted to see the battle engine in action for a few hours and then move on. Kind of collect the game more than play it. But then I installed this the morning of Thanksgiving day, and the next thing I knew was that it was 3am Friday...
This game is truly adictive! It is much more accessible than previous installments of the Total War series, where quite frankly, I never could get into the game enough to really enjoy it. Not so here! A good tutorial and a "guided mode" with advisors that help you throughout the game if you want, get you over the initial hurdle. And once you start playing, there is no turning back!
The game is very well done with lots of depth due to complexity under the hood that you can discover as you go (although the complexity does not really get in the way initially). It is the best of both worlds.
I only wish there was more printed information available about the game mechanics. The game comes with a good 80 page manual, but I found myself wishing for a second "expert" manual. (BTW: Do NOT buy the strategy guide. It has almost no additional information. Instead, check out www.totalwar.org).

This is like the best game ever in all Strategic games. i only played the demo but it has very nice graphics. if you don't like or it has bad graphics go buy a better computer. i would say this would be the best game of the year.

I first started playing the Total War series after Medieval came out, great game, but with Rome It's different, awesome graphics on the strategic map and battle maps. There's nothing like running down nasty Gauls with horsemen and seeing them flying in the air, AWESOME. It does taking a little getting used to, especially the battles. Overall this is one great game!!
I LOVE STRADEGY GAMES BUT THIS ONE SUCKS.

I went out and spent 50 dollars on this game in the thought that it would be one of the best games this year. I played it once and came to the conclusion this game blows i have rise of nations, starcraft, empire earth, age of empires, warcraft, and this is by far the worst one.

Well what can anyone say about Rome Total War? it's the toughest thing anyone can possibly be made to answer. Maybe it's wise to start with the other great human endeavours, the Ancient Greeks, the Pyramids, The European Rennaisance, Beethoven, Einstein. Put these in a melting pot and the end result would stll be vastly inferior to Rome Total War. The human mind is simply unable to comprehend the dizzying magnitude of Rome Total War's genius. It's like trying to comprehend the vastness of the Cosmos. Every single man woman and child on the planet must do 60 years of penance for failing to be in the same league as Rome Total War. Rome Total War is the greatest thing in the history of existence. We are but worms in the Almighty prescence of Rome Total War .

I loved the Total War Games, but as they grew older they stopped working on my PC, which is sad since i loved these games!!!
Oh Well, but this one looks great since you get to control all of Rome, just like in Shogun and Medievil.
I hope its as good as the first.

If you don't like your own men shot in the back, or want your men too kill each other, there is the function of action orientated battles. that means that it is more action orientated, meaning they will reduce realism, ie. shooting your own men. this can be done at any time in the campaign menu under options. So i am confused why everybody is saying oh no ive shot my own man in the back!
A good game, and it is their own stupidity that brings down a game's rating. any games' rating

Wow, I have been very impressed with the overall fun-play of this game. I have been a huge fan of Shogun Total War and Medieval Total War and their expansions. As a professor of Ancient European History, the game is somewhat historically accurate, i.e. Infantry units (with the exception of the Gladiator units), Cavalry units, and siege units and the rival Roman Families all seem to be accurate. If you are looking for an accurate representation of this historically based game, even though much of it is accurate, this game probably is not for you. However, if you are looking for a good introduction game to Roman history this game is very fun to play and quite addicting. There have been many occasions where my wife has asked me to turn the game off and she often threatens to erase the game off our hard drive and break the loading CD's.
Overall I am very impressed with game. When playing any civilization, you need to taylor your strategy to each individual civilization, and it seems that you cannot have the same one at every battle, especially when facing chariots or elephants or advanced Roman units. There were times where I played the Julii family against the Gaul's only to defeat them without loosing too many men and then face the Macedonians where I get annihilated, oh well. You just need to out-flank their Phalanx and hit them in their sides.
The only problem I have with it is playing the disappointing Carthaginians. There were several times where I would charge my infantry backed by archers and elephants, only for them to turn tail and run at the first sign of them dying, even set on easy mode.
I would highly recommend this game to teenage gamers to history nerds such as myself and everyone else in-between. One recommendation is to dedicate time to the game.
Outstanding!

Wow! This game is so cool! I love going on the Imperial campaign and sieging settlements and recruiting armies. The battles are amazing too. I like sending in my cavalry and ambushing the enemies. You can make enormous armies and you learn which are the best soldiers to use and train in different situations.
I am 9 and I found it quite easy to get into. I would recommend it for anyone age 9 and upwards.
