The best of the Total War series

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 21

Rome Total War is an exhilirating forced march through the Ancient world! Epic battles, realistically-depicted, combine with a Civilizations-style campaign map that spans Europe, North Africa, the Russian steppes and the Near East.

I've been playing since the original Shogun Total War game was released, and this step away from a Risk-style campaign management system has added greater depth to campaign strategy, and increased the sense of immersion. Do you establish forts along the borders of your empire, do you centralise your armies in your key cities, do you establish a network of watchtowers, or deploy field patrols to recce enemy territory or mount ambushes? The campaign map is beautifully depicted, reproducing the encroaching winter in Northern Europe as the seasons pass, depicting growing trade routes, as well as fixed settlements, temporary settlements and the seven wonders of the ancient world ... and yet as beautiful as the campaign play is - we're still only talking about half of the game.

When armies clash on the campaign map, be transported to a real-time battle of tactics on the ground. Each portion of the campaign map is reproduced in greater detail for battlefield manoeuvres ... even to the point of being able to see the seven wonders of the world depicted on the battlefield, or seeing fleets at anchor offshore. This attention to detail extends to how the men in different units act as they wait for battle, fidgeting or twirling their swords etc. You have to pinch yourself that this isn't a FPS game ... but there can be more than 2000 men on each side squaring off against one another. Again, immersion is the key word here.

I've been playing the game approximately 2-3 hours a day since the day it was released ... and the different strategic/tactical positions of the different playable factions keeps me riveted - apart from the Romans (which I personally find the least interesting to play), be the Greeks, the Seleucids, the Ptlomeic empire (Egypt), Britannia, the Gauls, the Germans, Carthage etc. A little bit of simple modding allows you to unlock otherwise unplayable factions such as Thrace, Macedon, Pontus, Scythia, the Dacians, the Iberians (Spanish) etc.

Buy the game and you'll be happy, though I recommend that you install the official mod to iron out a number of petty annoyances in terms of gameplay. I realise that there are a number of reviewers who feel as though the game has been ruined by one remaining bug, which has the effect of automatically ending any sieges that were in progress everytime you reload a previously-saved campaign. In all the hours of devoted gameplay, I was never aware of this bug ... I'm sure it exists, but it hasn't ruined my fun.

If you like arcade-style action fests, this may not be for you. If you like strategy games, you will be amazed. For the latter, a warning ... playing RTW has become almost an addiction for me. Be warned, but enjoy!

Save Your Money BUY THE GAME!

Save your money - buy the game? How does that make sense? This game is so well made you will be playing this game for months instead of buying new games to play - thus saving money. Make no mistake, the game manual is about as useful as a kick in the groin and a third degree burn, but the prologue is very effective in getting the concept of the game across. It is difficult making enough money to support your massive armies but I am getting the hang of it. There is a learning curve here since I did not play the other Total War games. The fight scenes are very realistic, the screams, bodies flying in the air after being hit by a full out Calvary charge, buildings on fire, bodies disintegrating after being hit by flaming catapult boulders. This game is the real deal! I have been playing computer games for 25 years; this is one of the best games ever. Get yourself a copy and start saving money...it is better than "Cats."

After reading the first 10 or 15 reviews on this site I'd thought I'd give this game a go. I really enjoy strategy games, and I thought this one might have quite a bit of depth, and would have a good longevity. The dull gameplay does not do the graphics justice, I expect to be able to switch on a game and enjoy playing it agian and again - this is not one of those games. I had my first (and last) look at it in early December - never again. C&C and Civilization have no rivals.

AWESOME!!!!!!

This game is one of my favoorite strategy games. It really does capture that roman war machine kind of era. The battles have great graphics and are easy to play. I don't know what this crap is about the battles being hard to control or they just turn in to 'who can kill more' kind of battles. If you have played Medieval: Total War, the battles in this game will be a peice of cake.
Then there is the empire biulding part of the game. I think this is a big improvment over Medievil. I Medieval: Total War when you invade a province there is an automatic battle. But in this game the two armies have ta actualy meet each other for a battle. This means having a plan to engage an army can actualy help win the battle. Such as if there is a hill north of the enemy on the campiagn map, and I aproach from the north, then in the battle I will have that hill in my control, meaning a better fighting position.
ANother plus about the Empire biulding is that there are key areas to defend. Such as if an enemy army wins a crossroad battle then he could be able to control that whaloe region because he has control of those roads. Bridges and Crossroads have actualy become important areas when protecting a frotier.
The Units in this game are also a big pluss. The Roman units fight with the same stratagies as the real Romans. WHen fighting with most roman units they will first through there pila (plural) two brake up the enemy fromation. This tactic actualy works.
I very much enjoy this game and recommed it to any military or strategy buffs. It has the ease of gamplay most people would want pluss historical acuracy military buffs like me would obsees about.

Its a game that will remain in history. It couldn't be any more briliant! Playing is fun and adictive, and you realy feel like an Emperor!!! The latency is realy high as you can start campaignes with tons of different nations, like Romans, Cartaginians, Greeks, Gauls, Egypcians, Germans, any many many more (trust me)!!! And there is a Multy-Player option that I still haven't tryed yet! You have all types of units from Catapults, and Balistas to Chariots and Roman legionares capable of forming the famous Testudo Formation. And there are navy battles too!! In conclusion: Its a must for anyone with intentions of controling the world!

The best game on earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rome Total War is the best game I've ever played, which is unique because I have a lot of real time strategy games. The graphics are AMAZING- you can see every little detail of soldiers who are fighting in the epic battles!
there are a few downs though, you must have the minimum requirements or the sound in the in-game movies sound weird, so I suggest that you make sure that you have the requirements for maximum enjoyment.
overall, I think that this game is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO worthwile to get- this game is 92% strategy, and 8% skill. THIS IS A MUST - GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BELIEVE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Strategy game ever

Rome total war is the top of the pyramid of strategy gaming. The game is nearly perfect, as it not only delivers turn based and real time war strategy, the option of managing or micromanaging all aspects of your faction (financial, economic, diplomacy, cultural, etc) but also the well represented historical sense that the game offers in the time of the Roman Republic before it evolved into the Roman Empire. And what about war??, well you asked for it, you'll wrap around massive ancient battles commanding and fighting against thousands of men in any location of the ancient world, wether that may be a barren plain, forest, desert, mountain, marshes, tundra, or defending or laying a siege against historical cities such as Sparta, Rome and Athens. The game has the best replay value i've ever experienced, i've been playing for a year now, and each time i play i find myself more impressed with it. When it came out it had some serious bug issues but frankly most of them have been erradicated with further patches and the game has been quite perfected for an even more pleasing gaming experience. The Total war community is very active with MODS for the game, which is a very positive element because it enhances and keeps the game alive and growing. I recommend this game to anyone into strategy wargaming and likes the roman period.

One of my Top 5 Strategy game sof all time

So many reviews have been written here, but let me add my own $00.02!!

First, RTW is one of my favoriate turn-based strategy games ever. And I would also rank it - as in the title - one of the top give best games ever.

A few comments:

Pros:
- The game is, with patch 1.5 - extremely stable and CA has fixed almost all of the bugs that were annoying in the initial release
- The graphics, when turned up high, are still visually impressive even given other similar contemporary game offerings.
- This game is probalby one of the most mod-friendly games I have ever seen - and the modding community that has sprung-up is incredible. Mods ranging from 'Rome:Total Realism' to a Lord of the Rings make this game eminantly replayable
- The game provides a great deal of flexability WRT battles - from being able to 'auto-calc' battles to playing them out in beautiful 3D.

Cons:
- You can only play the 'Roman' factions (there are 3 Roman factions btw) until you unlock the other game factions by first beating the game. If this really bugs you - you can always DL the game mod to unlock all the factions for play :)

I have bought and played the latest 'Total War' game (Medieval Total War) and although MTW does have eye-catching graphics - I have since unintalled MTW and just play RTW - it is THAT good. MTW is plagued by buggy AI and other issues that I won't get into here.

If you don't have RTW - you may be best off getting the 'Total War Eras' boxed-set - which contains RTW, the expansion, Alexander and other goodies...

Very Fun Game

This is an amazing game. The graphics are considerably better than its predecessor medieval, and also introduces an entirely new strategic movement system, allowing you to maneuver your armies on a regional scale.

The only downside is that you start out only being able to play as the three Roman factions, unlike in Medieval, in which you could play as any main faction right off the bat. However, this can be easily fixed with a simple system file edit.

Bad technical experience....

Rome: Total War had been on my "Buy" list for quite awhile. I'd never played any other Total War game and couldn't wait to play this one...and unfortunately, I still am waiting. I verified that I had all the minimal technical requirements before I bought it, but for whatever reason the game won't play properly. The campaign map is way choppy, and the resolution is too small. It often feels like I'm directing faceless ants rather than commanding hardened soldiers. I went to the Tech Support website and went back and forth with their support for weeks tweeking this, verifying that, adjusting this, and updating that(they were very polite by the way). I was even told by them that my hardware should have no problems running the game and ultimately we couldn't figure out what the problem was. Eventually, the experience became exhausting, the thrill and excitement died and I gave up. For me, it was a waste of $50 that I wished I had used elsewhere....

>*>*>*>*> UPDATE <*<*<*<*<

Since writing the above review, I upgraded to a newer video card (from nVidia MX420 to the nVidia TI4200). This has impacted the quality of the game enormously! I cannot put this game down! Very engaging and engrossing! Unfortunately I am not allowed to change the number of stars that I originally gave it. I would be more than happy to give this game a 5 for fun and a 4 for overall! 12/2/05
