I bought this because of its use on the History channel. They gave it high marks. Bought from Amazon because it was the best price at the time. Just getting into the game but it is very complex. The campaign game will take some effort to master.
Like civilization with battles

I didn't have trouble installing the game and I can run it at max colors and resolution without issues. Games load relatively fast and the program exits fast.
The game reminds me of civilization with a twist. Battles are fought on a battlefield instead of automatically resolving (You can optionally automatically resolve battles). The campaigns are very long and I don't have a complete grasp of the politics involved.
It's fun, but not the most fun I've ever had playing a game.

Me and my friends have been waiting for a game like this since ShOGun, which was awesome, but it was kind of laggy and slow. This game has better graphics, a whole new way to conquer, and Ancient armies.
way better then the other total war but has its problems

So you wanna be Ceasar? Then this is the game for you. This game is the successor of Shogun: Total War, and Medieval: Total War. This game is far better than either. All of the kinks that made me rate the other games one star have been worked out and this is quite fun to play.
WARNING. This game can eat away at your life. Three days off from work to study, read books, get some exercise and spend time with my wife. I did absolutely none of those things as I was glued to the computer screen.
If you are smart, curious and daring, you can rule the world quite easily. However, must people aren't. On the games fan sites many people complain that the computer is impossible to kill on the hardest level. I can only assume that those are the type of people who would have been the conquered and not the conquerer. If you do not take the high ground, use calvary for flanking attacks you will suffer unbearable loses even if you win the battle. If you do not maintain a disciplined battle line, if put family members who are idiots in charge of your armies, or if you charge pikemen with calvary, you be defeated quicker than the French at Angicourt, or at Waterloo, or at the Maginot Line, or at Alesia.
If you are cautious, yet daring. Willing to take losses, but only calculated losses, and are extraordinary goal oriented, taking over the world is as easy as drinking beer. Which is why I rated it only 4 stars over all because, I was hoping for more of a challenge.
Finally, a Roman treatment of Total War.

Shogun was good and so was Medieval. But few historical periods have the romanticism (no pun intended) of the Roman Empire. The gameplay is much like the previous editions, with the expected updates in graphics and game play. This is a great buy for any RTS fan or someone looking for Caesarian style.
Entertaining with no blood!

Well, I think it's one of the best games I've ever played! The battle scene was awesome, but there was one error I think is odd: there's NO BLOOD! Maybe they did it so it could get a better rating but it makes the whole thing unrealistic. Once I played a custom battle using an army of 3,000 with another allied army defending the city of Rome against an army of around 2,500 Gauls. There was an awesome fight at the front gate of the city when it had been destroyed: I thought around 600 men fought and died, and there was a pile of corpses, but there wasn't any blood!
The 10,000 unit promise isn't fully true. Using only 4,000 soldiers overall, everything is quite slow already, even though my PC has a 2.8 Ghz processor and 256 MB of RAM.

This game has depth... to easy? Turn up the difficulty. Graphics to advanced? Turn down the settings. This game is mostly historicly correct, but you can make history the way you want it! The Total War series is the best of RTS, if not Grand Strategy. Rome Total War is like two games in one... The makers are also from Europe, and that means quality... I am only guessing. I waited 3 years for Rome:Total War and I was greatly impressed, kept me busy for months and I still go back and play it once in a while!

Very nice game. Super Idea. Great graphics. More than I could imagine about a PC game, until I started to play it. Unfortunately sometime after you install you'll face some problems of performance. After playing for 2 or 3 rounds it became very hard to play, slowing down considerably, becoming choppy, answering with delay to every command. A pity.
