Rome: Total War is one of those games where you like it because of it's huge amount of good content, but overall the gameplay doesn't quite deliver. Rome: Total War will draw you in with it's deep level of troop recruitment and city development, but the battles aren't quite as good as they look.
For one thing, Rome: Total War does deliver in several areas. Even though I got this game around the same time I was studying Roman history in school, this game taught me a few historical facts anyway. You do learn a little about Rome's military and unit names. You also learn about the reforms of Gaius Marius, and so on and so on. The games content draws you in.
Because gameplay is the main substance of entertainment in an RTS, rarely do I ever ask for a strategy title to have good sound. But Rome: Total War shines in this zone. The music sucks you into the ancient times, the voice acting is above-average, and the screams of soldiers and the sound of chariots swerving across the batllefield is almost enough to make tears of joy fall out of your ears.
Graphics are also very well done. Thousands of units can be shown at a time. Troops are nicely detailed, even if they look like clones. Even on the low-end machine the game's engine manages to flash it's beauty.
Gameplay, on the other hand, is where this game falls a bit flat. The battles are the dissapointment. Although strategy is often recommended, your enemies fight so poorly you often can often attack then straight on. Commanding your minions is a bit tough, too. When I order my calvalry to slaughter fleeing infantry, they often go off course an get a bit sideways of the enemy.
Overall, though, I recommend this game for most people, and it is defintely pretty good. Just a few loose nails here and there, that's all.
i agree with sam divinia wholeheartedly

i fell head-over-heels in love into medieval:total war. it still is the greatest strategy game ever made. but i'm disappointed with rome tw...the developers took a step back instead of forward with it. maybe it's because in medieval no nation was preferred and you could go with any of them and have a blast. this time rome is the much-preferred nation of use (as the title suggests); when you first play the game you can only play as one of three roman factions. playing as one of the other non-roman factions later is harder and not really that much fun. why? because this game really isn't that much fun. medieval total war was nothing like civilization, a game that has always bored me. but rome tw is just an enhanced civ clone. and that's not a good thing. if you really loved medieval tw, and thought that it blew away shogun tw...you will probably be disappointed with this one. it's not bad, it's just not great (which medieval tw was).

Rome Total War is easily one of the best games i have ever bought. It gives the kind of tactical and strategic freedom most other similiar games can only touch upon. You really are allowed full control, but also have the aid of the AI any time you get overwhelmed; the whole experience stays quite smooth. I definetely recommend Rome for anybody who likes history and/or military history . It is amazingly fun and well paced, but the developers have also taken a lot of time and interest to add in a lot of interesting and accurate historical information. All in all it's a extremely solid product: well researched, well executed, and amazing to play.
Great Game

After waiting for a year for Rome, my first encounter was a total mess and pain. These people have problem with their installation what is amazing is that a company who can afford to out out games like this uses Install shield crap as their deployment tool.
Anyway i return the first game set i bought cause it would not install. I took my chances and purchased another set from a local seller and this one works fine, except a few bugs for which the game simply crashes.
I was impressed but disapointed at the same time
what impress me:
The units
The fight
The logic of the AI
What disapoint me:
Still you cannot bring support units as you please you must wait or release some units in order to bring them this is bull !@#$%. I accept this in MEdieval and Shogun but for god sake in Rome too?
At the star of each battle you still are given LITTLE time to prepare so it looks ugly as hell it is the same as before RUCH before the other come over. This is HARDLY the reality. I have read just about every book in Military warfare and war AINT like this. so This part of the simulation i gove one STAR.. in other words pretty crappy.
No battles on the sea, the same stupid screen which tells you who won..pretty BAD..
Still i have lots of things i did not like at all. Nevertheless this is by FAR the BEST Strategy GAME EVER developed!!!
I am a computer programmer and as though get a feel for how much these guys have to work and think to get this kind of level but i feel they can still do better and since they are #1 in this field for now they have to DO IT before anyone else sees the opportunity for example MS can come up with a BAD HALO type of strategy game in the future or Lucas ARt Star War or someone else
with Napoleonic war
I receomend purchasing this game simply because it is the BEST ever though it has flaws it is still ONE HECK of a Ride..
A real strategy game would not go by TURNS like my Turn, Your Turn his turn..etc it would be REAL TIME GAME.....
Most of the times commanders spend days and weeks basically looking at each other and thinking how to attack not right away as this game makes you.......
They can do it, the question Would they do it for us the fans?
Gret Game (Albeit With A Few Bugs)

First of all, this game ROCKS!
You control one of the Roman factions (the House of Juli, Scipi, or Brutus), and you have the option to make war, sign peace treaties, enter alliances, grant trade rights, hire assassins or spies, and many other game actions. This makes the game one of the most elaborate I've seen (including Civilization I, II, or III).
The graphics on the battle scenes are amazing. You can pan around the battle and zoom in. The only issue I've had with zooming is that you can get a bit disoriented if you spin around. (Maybe this is different if you're using a mouse instead of a trackball, like I am.)
The other issue I have is that the "cheats" I've seen don't seem to work in the game. I open the console window and type a command, but the cheats just give me a "bad command" error. Not even typing "?" for Help works. Has anyone experienced this??
great.....but i font think i could play it forever

I am getting tired of seeing video game makers' ideas of the ancient world based off of movies and other games. If you want to make a game historical then DO IT. Go to a university and find some classics professor to talk to. I've heard so much bad history from kids who played this game that it makes me want to shoot them(those who made it, not the kids). When I played it there were so many bugs that it offended me as a gamer almost as much as a historian.
Don't bother with this game, wait for game makers to realize that finding people who actual know about the subject isn't that hard or expensive.
I read a review by a "Roman from Rome" Italian American that loved this game...then I checked his profile and saw he also loved Disney's Aladin.
Both share the same amount of historical accuracy...
