Excellent Game, But.....

I like this game, it's like a better version of Empire Earth, and it feels almost identical too that. DO NOT compare this too anything Civilization related, cause it ain't even close.

Anyways the graphics are amazing, there not as taxing on your Video Card as Empire Earths, and the textures and stuff are better then EE too. Also as compaired too Empire Earth it uses almost the same interface and quick start options but with a kick, you get too set the AI behavior, and this is what EE is missing and severly hurts it.

You can set the AI on Rise Of Nations anyway you want, and that's the way it'll go, instead of Empire Earth's "Kill All, End All" AI, where if you build a Wonder you'll get blitzed and won't be able too fight them off. The AI on here won't launch armaggedon when you build a wonder or advance in technology, they play very strategically, and follow victory conditions.

The Resources in this game are also better, you can accumulate them VERY fast and at times you won't even believe it (that kinda knocks my rating down for this game a bit) It poses no challenge almost, and the AI gets resources just as quick, and next thing you know you see 20 wonders being built (which leads too a game victory) and you've only been playing for 30 minutes.

Don't get me wrong though, there's way more good in this game then bad. I mean having resources accumulate like that means you can actual produce enough troops too fend off them raiding parties (unlike EE). Also the City and territory expansion is a neat addition, as well as the different researches. (Upgrades too units and such work in the same way as EE) Another thing i like is that if you got an allie AI nation, they will actively trade and provide support very nicely.

Well in short this game is very good, although not quite perfect, but if your looking for a good alternative too Empire Earth, i'd HIGHLY recommend this game, especially if your looking for better, more strategic AI, and some more finer worked out nooks and cranies that plagues Empire Earth. I haven't tried it online yet, but i'm sure it's just as nice. Also it's VERY easy too catch onto how everything works.

Don't listen to people who don't actually play the game...

First off, if I can address the review about the game lacking single player modes... The guy doesn't even have the game.

Not only does the single player mode have the mode he discussed...but it has two other modes as well. There are campaigns (which can also be created by the user) and there in fact is a mode where you can play as many computer opponents as you want. It's called quick play mode. It's **RIGHT ON THE OPENING SCREEN**

In any event, I must tell you that this is absolutely without a doubt the BEST RTS game that's ever been developed. Big Huge Games did an incredibly good job with this game.

This game isn't for the mindless C&C, Starcraft, and Warcraft players. This game is for intelligent players who can handle managing multiple cities and armies at once with the economy as well.

If you want to mass a bunch of tanks and rush your opponent and have a large cluster of nonsense in the middle of the map, buy C&C or Starcraft. If you want to gather a bunch of stone and tower rush your opponent into oblivion and build 3 barracks outside their base.

You can't do that in RoN. You can only build within your city limits...and you add more cities and expand like a true real-world scenario.

BHG added *JUST* enough upgrades, resources, and ages to make this game the best RTS ever. As an avid RTS player, it also makes this the best game I've ever played.

Please also don't listen to the complains about system issues. Very many new games are going to have them and the patch is out now. All is well...and you're insane if you don't have this game.

Best RTS I've ever played

Frist off this game is great. You can control 18 nations. 18! From the Chinese, Russians, Greeks and Aztecs you rule the world. I thought what one of the neat things about this game is all the nations have very different special features than other nations that make them stand out from the rest. For instance, when I was playing online the other day, eight players were in the room and no two people choose the same nation! You can choose your nation depending on your style of play.

Multiplayer is AWESOUME! Truly. You can make all different kinds of scenarios with your friends or people you've met online. You can recreate the American and Japenese civil war, firght with tiger tanks in the modern age or battle it out with your knights and archers in the medavil age. See you can start in whatever age you want and end in whatever age the hosts wants you to end at. So you can recreate many historical battles.
You can test your skills many of the skills tests in tools and extras and dominate the world in conquer the world campaign. You can also play a quick battle against the computer to try out new nations. Personally I like the Japanese but many many people would disagree. I have a blast with the conquer the world campaign but I can see how you would disagree. Conquer the World a great scenario to conquer nations and earn skill points but I think if they would have made a few campaigns with nations in historical battles the single player options would be more fun as you could play with your nation in battles that really happened, but please please dont let that stop you. This is a great game with many options, because you can create your own campaigns anyway online or against the computer. You can build cities and trade routes to build up your ecoonomy and conquer the aztecs by hitting them hard with nukes and going in with special forces and stealth bombers. From knights to tanks this is a great game. Also the resources dont get chopped down so controlling key resources is A major factor in multiplayer and agains the computer.

Not too shabby

I cant say that I was dissapointed with this game when I played it. I had been following it's progress for several months before it's arrival on the store shelves, and couldn't wait for it to come out. It looked great. For the most part, it lived up to my expectations. It has very nice graphics (example: the awesome looking waves in the water!) and I love some of the aspects in the game that I've never seen before, like the cities and borders. Another thing that I am impressed with, is how smoothe it can run. I played it on a computer with very low end specs in relation to the minimum system requirements of the game: I played it on a P3 600 Mhz, 128 RAM, 16 mb graphics card...and it still played decently for me, although I did have to put most of the graphics settings on low, and those still looked pretty good! I can only imagine how well it plays with a new computer. Anyway, the gameplay itself is great...it is much more in-depth than Age of Empires, where you just build a clump of buildings all across the map and attack and attack and attack. (Not that AOE is bad or anything...but Rise of Nations certainly is an improvement, in my opinion) Unfortunately, I was dissapointed with one aspect of the game. You advance through the ages so quickly. I found myself in the later ages (like the Gunpowder and Enlightenment Ages) and I hadn't even had a battle yet! I find this annoying, because I would think that you should spend a little time per age, having a battle or two before advancing to the Modern Age! I didn't even get to see how most of the different military units in some of the earlier ages, like the medevil age, performed in battle because of the speed of the age advancment. However, I realize that some people like it that way, and despite that, I found that you can play a complete random map game in little less than an hour and a half, which can be a useful feature when you dont have all the time in the world. To sum it up, I would buy this game over again, if I needed to. It is very well designed, and much more realistic than games like Age of Empires II, but remaining a blast to play at the same time!

DA BOMB

I got the demo and I liked the little touches such as building queues etc. so I bought the game. Once you learn the interface and hot keys watch out. I can fight two wars and run a 6 city economy all at once and I'm not that good. The interface is excent and you workers priortize themselves. The risk style single player game is fun if you like risk, I happen to really like it. When you do a micro battle from the game board, there a ton of influencing factors and the battles are quick, usually.

The value in this game is in its depth. If you just are throwing armys at each other then much of the game is wasted. There are a numbver of things like flanking with calvery and invisible units via generals that really get things going. Modern warefare needs to be experinced as it is very well done and the intensity gets high. I highly recommend this game. BTW, I can win 60% of the time on medium, people who are having issues winning on easie levels need to read about strategies or get the guide. Once you start flanking with horses the games get much easier.

One of the Best Games ever published

This game combines the greatest aspects of Civilization III, Red Alert 2, Empire Earth, and Age of Empires. I would honestly have to rate this as one of the best strategy, war games I have ever played. I used to think Command and Conquer Generals was cool...until I played this!! Anyone who loves any of the aforementioned games NEEDS to buy this game. No questions asked. You will not be able to turn your computer off!

Great game!

I must say that RoN is one of the best RTS games I have ever played! The gameplay is well-paced, the units are plentiful and balanced, great music and top notch animation to boot.

My chief and only complaint is that nuclear weapons dominate the late game too much, and any game ending in the modern nuclear ages suffers from an inevitable nuke-tossing fest. Some may love this, but I prefer a unit to unit duke-out by non-nuke means.

Even with this in mind, I must say that overall this game is an absolute must-have for any self-proclaimed RTS gamer!!

The game is smart!

I really love this game! I have all of the Age of Empires games and have always loved those, but this one is one step up. My favorite difference between this and the Age of... games is the increased intelligence of laborers. If they have nothing to do, they'll find a job nearby and start doing it. That leaves me free to concentrate less on workers and more on the game at hand.

If you get this game, be prepared to memorize the quick-keys. I'm still working on that aspect, but they save a lot of time.

Great game!!

Great RTS game that lets you do what ALL gamers desire...

Yes, Rise of Nations is an AMAZING RTS endeavor that allows you to accomplish what every single gamer has desired at some point in his/her life...CONQUER THE WORLD!
Take Age of Empires, add to it some cutting-edge graphics, (a combination of 2D and 3D that look so GOOD that they threaten such games as Warcraft 3), add to it some unique units and hundreds of more diplomatic options, and what do ya have?
VOILA! welcome to the RoN.
There is NOTHING bad that can be said about the game itself, from graphics, to sound, to playability...this game makes itself known as a top competitor in all those places.
However, if there is one thing that COULD be missed...especially by fans of AoE...are the Walls! yes, the one thing that made AoE so popular was the option of constructing massive walls, iron gates (that could be raised) and all.
Although Walls would make this game perfect in every aspect, it does not take away from the AMAZING RTS it already is.
The game to end all games, RoN does more than just redefine an already overpopulated RTS genre.
