This game is not nearly as fun as Mario Kart Double Dash for GCN, namely because there is no two-player Grand Prix; the abundance of characters not withstanding. Another thing I don't like is that there are no karts or items unique to characters (remember DK's giant banana peel?). The online play is the game's saving grace, otherwise I would have given it one-star. Online play is well executed, no noticeable lag, but there are not as many options to customize the races as there are in VS. And my final gripe with the game is that Rainbow Road is not as good as Double Dash's.
Lame...

I pre-ordered this game because I consider(ed) myself a hardcore Mario Kart fan, and instantly broke it out of the box and started playing. There are several things that make this game fun, but almost every single time I play, I can't help getting upset and putting down the controller, swearing to never play again - and then picking up Grand Theft Auto IV. It seems like every race I'm leading from laps 1 - 3, and then on the third lap I get hit by three red shells AND a blue shell, and then I end up in 11th place. I must just have the worst luck, but I'm getting sick of this game - and fast. They've almost taken the skill out of the game, you only rely on annoying new items.
Pros:
-Online Multiplayer
-New characters
Cons:
-New items that affect multiple players
-New carts / motorcycles that are essentially pointless
-VS battles with up to 6 computer players that cannot be changed
-Problems with Nintendo multiplayer servers
-Boring new race tracks and ruined classic tracks
More fun than I have had since the original!

I cant believe how much fun this game turned out to be. I was laughing with joy and swearing with frustration for the first time in years. The fun level due to the steering mode is at a whole new level. I felt like I was playing the first Mario Kart when I was a kid all over again. And Rainbow Road! I haven't fallen off a stage that many times since the very first rainbow road (with no edges!). I am glad that this game is so fun and I am also glad its frustrating. Its nice to have a challenge again. I was sick of blowing through stage after stage in mario kart with such ease. Welcome back to the '90s when Mario Kart was new and fun and your little sister moved the controller all over the place thinking it helped her steer (only this time it does!)

You actually feel as if you are driving the vehicle! Graphics are great and the courses are amazing. A big step from the older version of Mario Kart. Great with friends and family. Grab a steering wheel, and lets race. The best thing is you can compete across the country against the top Wii racers!
Great game with a few minor annoyances

The new Mario Kart offers several wonderful new tracks as well as reminding us of some of the past classic tracks. Of the new tracks that dont need to be unlocked, there is a track that takes you through an abandoned mineshaft. It almost feels like you are riding a roller coaster as you race through this one. Some of the new tracks that require you to unlock them offer some real challenges. Racing over large tree limbs and through underwater tubes and over river rapids are among the challenges. I give the new tracks an A+ for scenery and challenge.
I personally like the motorcycle option of racing. Popping wheelies to gain an extra mph is kinda cool. There are also more 4 wheel vehicles to choose from including all terrain vehicles. But whether racing with a 2 or 4 wheel vehicle, I far prefer using the wii remote in conjunction with the nunchuck as opposed to the steering wheel. Its very easy to over-steer with the wheel. Its easier to keep my racer on the track when I steer with my thumb. I doubt I ever will use the wheel.
The online features so far seem nice, except as some have mentioned, you cannot race grand prix online, which is a bit of a drag. You also cant race grand prix on the multiplayer vs option. However, you can make your own grand prix; just race 4 times and pick the tracks yourself. It still keeps a tally of points after each race and a trophy is still awarded. To me, thats grand prix anyway, so who cares? But to note: you still CANNOT do this online...a minor gripe.
As some have noted, while racing against AI, you tend to get pummeled a little too much by bombs, ink smears, and lightning bolts. Your recover time is a lot faster than it used to be, so you can still win if you keep your racer on the track. But it can get frustrating. One other annoyance I have is that at 50cc and 100cc, its too easy to win. As soon as I opened the box and was playing, I won nearly every race at those speeds when racing against AI. 150cc is far more challenging however, especially the tracks that need to be unlocked.
In summary, the good points of this game make it a near must have for a wii owner. As usual its a game that adults and kids will have hours of enjoyment playing together.
It's not MarioKart 64, but it's better than Double Dash.

I'm writing this review from a casual gamer standpoint, as well as a strong fan of the mariokart franchise and nintendo in general. Nintendo still has not been able to re-create the awesome experience of mariokart 64, but this is a fairly good attempt. Below I will rate aspects of the game on a 5 star scale, followed by pros, cons, and a final conclusion.
Graphics: *****
Music: ****
Items: **
Multiplayer: *****
Gameplay: *****
Pros: New track designs are very creative and fun to play. Graphics are good for what the wii is capable of. Gamecube controller support. Multiplayer racing is as great as it always has been. Golden mushroom finally makes you actually faster.
Cons: Removed character specific items. Can no longer squash opponents with lightening bolt. Shells move very slow and take much longer to recover from than past games. Items in general are very annoying and in excess. They interrupt what used to be fun racing, especially against the AI. New items like blooper and POW block not only take away from the fun but also the AI is pretty much immune to both. Very poor selection of classic tracks, did not include wario stadium or dessert from n64, and chose many subpar classic tracks instead of superior ones (ie sherbert island and dk mountain over choco mountain and frosty land).
Overall the game is a good buy for wii owners and successfully adds another quality chapter to the mariokart franchise. Racing in VS mode is very fun with human players as usual. Grand prix in single can be very annoying because 50 and 100cc karts move slower than molasses making it extremely boring, while as 150cc and mirror mode the AI some how has super comeback ability and always seems to pass you even when driving your best. The items in the game are far too much a distraction as they are fun and competitive. Who wants to lead for 2 laps and end up in 9th because of one bad set of items at the end of the race? Items used to help you gain 1 or 2 places in a close race, in this game, one item can make or break you for 10 whole places. Bullet bill can take from 12 to 2 while as a blue shell coupled with a lightening cloud can turn you from 1st to 9th at the end of a race, very, very annoying on mirror mode. Also, the introduction to time trails and grading systems for cups has all the more made the game more annoying. If they learned from diddy kong racing, no one wants to race super hard time trials to unlock things. Sure, time trials for fun, BUT NOT TO UNLOCK KARTS AND CHARACTERS. Same with grades, it's hard enough to finish first on the harder cups, why make it worse by adding star grades to unlock things. It's challenging, but there is a line between fun challenge and sheer frustration, this game offers both.
This game offers better courses and fun gameplay over double dash, but it's not as balanced as mario kart 64. You should pick this up either way, as it's still a classic franchise. I recommend using the gamecube controller, as the wii wheel is very unresponsive and won't help you one bit on 150 cc.
BUY IT!!!!

I could not be more enthusiastic about this game! It is by far my favorite Wii game and the only one that has managed to keep my attention for longer periods of time. This is the reason I bought a Wii system. LOVE IT!

With almost a week of playing this game under my belt I would have to say I am not disappointed in this game. I have owned every version of Mario Kart and have loved them all. I like the new tracks (though there are a couple of them that I have a hard time staying on the tracks at the 150cc level) and I like the inclusion of some of the older tracks that I have come to know and love. The graphics are terrific, the sounds are good and the music isn't annoying like it has been in some of the past versions. I love being able to race using my own Mii. It is so much fun to see yourself put into a game. It really gives the game so much more of a personal feeling. Online play is great and there is very little waiting time to find a group of people to play with. People dropping out of a race is no longer a problem as they are usually replaced with new people looking to join in on a game or two. Racing Ghosts online is fun as it gives you on opportunity to see how people compare to you. The first online tournament is fun so far and it's neat how they have changed the track just a little bit (Chain Chomp is running loose instead of being tied to his pole). I see a lot of play coming out of this game as even after I get all the gold cups, there's still lots to do and always people to race online.
Very well done

I got this 1 day ago and today I couldn't stop playing it. It is a great game for multiplayer and the nintendo wfc mode. You can keep playing this game with all the new bikes, carts, and characters. The graphics are one of the best, and out of all the mariokart games, this is the best. The wheel in my opinion, makes it really fun. So far, there are no negative concepts in this game. The race action was adrenaline pumping, and you couldn't get enough of it. Nintendo really has done an excellent job on this game. There are lots of other types of gameplay like ghost races, tournaments, grand prix mode, time trials etc. This game can be challenging and at the same time easy and fun. Even though I am not a big Mario fan, I like the games but this stood out the most. Whoever out there, who is looking for a good game, get this one.
