Another great game added to the Mario Kart legacy!

I have eagerly anticipated this game for months now. When I finally received it on Sunday (this was the first time I took SSBB out of my wii in months!), I couldn't wait to see if the game lived up to the hype. I am glad to report that it certainly did! The gameplay is just what you would expect from a Mario Kart game... so if you are looking for Grand Turismo, this is not the game for you! If you are looking for hours of way fun kart racing then read on. Here are some of my observations:

Controls - I love that the wii games are giving several control options. Initially, I tried the wii wheel control schema, and it is really well done. However, I found that powersliding was a little more difficult using this method. I was more comfy with the gamecube controller or the wiimote+nunchuck. After playing for a few hours, i switched back to the wii wheel, and it was a bit easier than before, and a bit more fun. In my opinion, the wiimote+nunchuck is by far the best control type. Pulling off tricks is kinda tricky with the gamecube controller.

Gameplay - Lots of people are griping about how the items you get from item boxes are dependant on your placement in the race. I think it makes perfect sense and works well. Also, many are complaining about the blue shell (which automatically wipes out the person in first place). I admit is sucks to get hit while you are in first place, but in my experience, this only costs you about 2-3 seconds, and it has yet to cost me to lose a race (that I can remember). I think these are really nice features to ensure that everyone has fun playing, including novices!

Levels - I LOVE that they included lots of retro levels. SNES Ghost track, N64 Bowser's Castle... really exciting. Also, all of the retro levels have been somewhat updated graphically... all in all the game is beautifully done. Granted, it isn't Grand Turismo.... but again, if you are looking for those kind of graphics... you are playing the WRONG GAME on the WRONG CONSOLE! :P

ONLINE - WELL DONE, NINTENDO! Brawl was OK in the online department, but so far, it seems that Mario Kart got it right! It is 100% free to play online, and I haven't experienced any kind of lag, no trouble connecting. Me and a friend were able to register each other in no time, and got playing right away! One really cool feature is that there is an online rating/points system that is used to pair you with other online players with similar scores/skills. This keeps the games a bit closer and fair. I also love the fact that you can view people from your area (graphically represented on the map using their mii) that have similar times on various courses. Kinda cool. I can also compare my scores to my friends scores...which is a nice feature as long as I am ahead! Again, I cant stress enough that the online portion of this game is VERY well done, and is even more fun than the single player mode! I played online the same day the game come out, so I am sure that there was way more traffic (pun intended) on that day that any other day in the future, and I had no problems connecting and experienced no lag (which is a bit more than I can say about brawl, as their online service had a rough time the first few days).

Anyway, this game will receive plenty of 5-star ratings, so I wont ramble any further. Do yourself a favor and buy the game!

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After Mario Galaxy, I didn't think there was such a game that would be as fun on Wii. I wasn't even looking forward to this game. Oh my God, I love it, I love it, I love it! It's flawless. The steering wheel adds so much more to it. By far, the BEST racing game I've ever played. Haven't tried online yet. Even in single player mode, it's fun. It's one of those hard to put down games, seriously. The only reason to stop is because your upper arms start to get sore from holding the wheel up.... I got weak arms. ;)

A Greater Disappointment Than Double Dash!!

Mario Kart Wii has the potential to be a great game, but because of two very ill-conceived aspects, is virtually unplayable and unenjoyable.

Unbalanced gameplay is what prevents me from rating this higher than one star. One item in particular is the blue shell, first introduced in the Nintendo 64 Mario Kart, then reformulated in the Gamecube Double Dash!! iteration to its present form, is an item that, when released, flies over all players to bomb the one in first place. When in first place, you cannot defend yourself against it unless you have in your possession a mushroom you use at the exact moment, but receiving a mushroom in first place is extremely rare. If this sounds like punishing good players, then you would be right. What makes this especially egregious is that the item is used by the computer in 1-player mode, particularly as the lone human player is nearing the finish line after being in first place for the majority of the race.

The other aspect that seems ill-conceived is the driver ranking, ranging from C, B, A, *, **, ***. This allegedly rates your driving skill. What is ridiculous is that to get a ***, the highest ranking, you must be in first place the vast majority of the races, win every race, and avoid wiping out on items. Some races I have received a rank of ** for winning every race but one with huge leads over the rest of the pack. Other times, I have received a rank of C, despite winning every race, including several where I led the race, only to go from first to last in the final lap due to a blue shell and other unavoidable items randomly generated by the computer. In my opinion, the greater "driving skill" and rank comes from those who are so good they can win a race despite being "sent to the back" with less than half a lap to go.

Overall, the game has great courses (for the most part), great character roster, and a great variety of karts and bikes. On paper, this looks like a great game.

But video games should be fun, and when one is not fun because the computer "cheats," I cannot rank it highly.

Multiplayer Battle mode ruined.

The overall racing part of the game is enjoyable but one of my favorite aspects of the game has always been Battle Mode. They completely ruined this by removing the free for all option and forcing team play.

This coupled with the fact that the battle arenas are too large for 3-4 people to play, and most of the time is spent simply trying to locate each other. Battle Mode should have been given the option for a free for all and some smaller maps for 4 players. I hope they correct this in future releases.

Can we say A bit frustrating!

I don't want to deture anyone from this game cause I have a habit of not liking or having problems with games other tend to love, like Pikmin 2, sorry wasn't that great.

This game Mario Kart, is frustrating, it has it's great momments indeed, but even when one finishes in first it isn't like "man, I really worked hard to get here" it's more like "whew, what luck that I made first". This game reminds me of N64 mario kart, I hated that version, but loved the one of snes and GC. I am sure this is the minority view, and I will still play it (payed 50 bucks for it) but when I first played Mario Galaxy man that was ACTUALLY fun to play even when you did die, this game is like a mad house and man, every race you get hit with lighnting at least twice holy crap can I even start driving! The scenes are beautiful but I am so busy trying to do a trick off each jump or drift long enough to get a boost just to stay in the race, is it me or does this remind anyone of Fzero for GC, holy crap that game was hard! This game looks and at times (when you aren't being blown up hit, squirted with ink or ran over even though you aren't small) feels Great, but it becomes frustrating when if you are hit you shoot back from 1st place all the way to 10th if you don't have a substantial lead. In a couple of weeks I will probably love it, but Galaxy I love the first day and at the same time was actually able to enjoy the beauty and challenge of it. This game is challenging but in a annoying frustrating (do it this way with this technique only!)way that only Luck could help you with till you've memorized each and every course like the back of your....ZAP ZAP ZAP, holy crap can I even write a review!

Good:

the look of the rounds
the flow of the track (when you aren't easily knocked to a stand still)
the online ability

Bad:

difficulty in starting once you've been hit
excessive amounts of ways that stop you regardless how good you are moving
and no more snaking

Ok so I thought this would be a GC updated version I was wrong, should have rented it first.

The best Mario Kart yet.

This is without question, the ultimate Mario Kart game, this is every Mario Kart fan's dream come true. Anything I could have asked for, has been implemented into this game.

Anyone comes to a Mario Kart game looking for the best graphics around is making a mistake, the series is about game-play, so don't expect any mind blowing visuals. However, I'm not saying Mario Kart is not a good looking game for the Wii. At first glance you won't really notice any difference between this and Double Dash, and any even say they didn't change it at all. Well, trust me when I say that when in motion this game looks way better than Double Dash. This is the result of several small things I noticed that add up to a big difference in my opinion. Firstly, this iteration carries the series tradition of no pop-in and a silky smooth frame rate. The character and vehicle models are much more detailed. Even the weapons are more detailed, you can see genuine grooves in the shells rather than just drawn on lines, the wings on the dreaded blue shell flap now, and more. The textures have been upgraded a little bit, and the lighting is vastly upgraded. Now when you drive by lava, there will be a red glow on you, or multiple colors of glow on Rainbow Road. You can see much farther now, which is a good thing because the backgrounds are much more detailed now, even on the retro tracks. There's a bunch of particle effects now, it may be leaves falling from trees, or snow, either way it looks good and adds to the atmosphere. So, separately these things don't sound like much, but combined it truly makes a difference.

Soundtrack hasn't ever really been a strong point in the Mario Kart series. Its not that they have bad music, but its not amazing either, mostly because this sort of game doesn't call for an epic soundtrack. Having said that, I think some of the music on the new tracks is better than usual, although having your character yell with joy every time they go off a jump can be irritating.

Now we come to the best part, game play. Mario Kart has always been about game play, and MK Wii is no different. We can start off with characters. There's several more characters than there were in Double Dash, some of them are really cool like Dry Bowser, while other like Baby Daisy make you question if listening to her is really worth it to play this game. They all have their own list of karts and bikes of course, which are much more diverse than before in terms of speed, acceleration, toughness, and handling. This brings me to bikes. I thought the newly added bikes would be stupid, but I was wrong, they actually work quite well and are a welcome addition to the series in my opinion. The new tracks are very cool and are the most intricate and imaginative I've seen in the series, while the retro tracks are welcome, they all have received a bit of a face lift, but still look like their original versions. There's also online play, which everyone has been waiting for since the Gamecube came out, unfortunately for you I can't comment on it because I don't play games online, partly its because I'm too lazy to hook it up, and partly because there's a lot of irritating people online. I have play local split screen though and its very fun, as it always is with this series. As for the Wii wheel, well it works pretty well actually. I was very surprised they got the motion controls down. However, I still prefer the Gamecube controller, it is a little bit more accurate, but its probably mostly just because I'm more used to the analog stick than motion control. The wheel works extremely well for those who are new to gaming, even my mother, who is extremely funny to watch try to play games, got the hang of it very quickly and actually won a race in 50cc mode.

I really don't see many faults in this game. It could maybe look a little better, and it could've added more retro tracks I guess. The only thing I could really ask for in a sequel is a track editor. Overall this is an amazing game if you just want to have fun, or want some sweet multi-player. If you own a Wii I'd highly recommend it.

fun, but the rubber band AI will p*ss you off...

As a long time Karter since the SNES days, I am excited to finally MK come to the Wii. The Wii Wheel should be your only option; it makes the game much more fun. The tracks and characters are extensive. You will have plenty of hours of play, especially with the online component.

My HUGE complaint, as a "veteran" racer, is the rubber band AI. Watch out if you're in the top 5 anytime during a race. You can be hit by shells, struck by lightning and spun out in a span of less than 10 seconds, dropping you to 12th. Meanwhile all you get are banana peels for being in the front. Trust me, you'll want to toss the wheel. The items should be random for everyone and the game should be geared for everyone, not just beginners. The same thing occurs online.

The best way to enjoy is to play with buddies, either via friend codes or locally. By three wii wheels and get to racing!

Fun Fun Fun.

I just got this game today and have been playing it for several hours now. I agree with some of the other reviewers here that once you get towards the front of the pack (especially in first place) you get nailed with everything but the kitchen sink, but I do not think that takes away from the fun of the game, if anything it makes it more challenging and fun. I tried out the online play and it worked flawlessly, connected quickly and did not lose my connection at all during the time I played. The graphics on the game are pretty good. The reason I gave this game 5 stars is based mainly on the gameplay and how fun it is.

Best Game In The Market!!!!!!!!!
