A triple, just short of a home-run

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4

When I first bought this game, I didn't know what I was in for. I finally got it and I was shocked at the realism. The players such as Eric Karros, Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken Jr. (white hair and all!), Jason Giambi, Jeff Bagwell, and all the other players that I don't have room to mention, are as real in this game as they would be in real life face-to-face! The graphics are amazing! I couldn't beleive how realistic this game is.

<<<<>>>>

You do feel that the game is a little rushed. The seasons are last years, so you don't get this year's season, obviously. The replays don't have that much value to them. This also has no home-run derbuy like Sega said.

<<<<>>>>

If you are real baseball nut like me, I'd probably wait until your local video rental store has World Series Baseball 2K2. But if you would like a baseball game quickly and for a cheap price, I'd get this. Listen to these stats from World Series Baseball 2K2: spring training (for you grapefruit fans), create AND train players, home-run derby, better realism, and a more complex batting system so you don't hit a home-run every time you swing the bat.

So, it's up to you. A better baseball game for $40, or a not as much fun game for $20. Pick what you think is the best for you.

Hope you like it if you get it. God Bless! Colin

Don't Buy This Horrible Game Without First Renting It

Sega sure made a lot of errors with this game, and it's an absolute shame. How can a game like VIRTUA TENNIS be so good from this company, while this beloved classic is now so bad? Baseball games for the Sega Saturn system and Nintendo were much better than this disaster. Why is there no franchise mode, which seems necessary these days for sports gamers? Why can't humans be given the option to control their fielders? Why was so much effort put into the graphics, while everything else looks thrown together? Why do the announcers sound worse than on the Genesis game Sportstalk Baseball? I played this game a few times at stores and that was enough for me to know that [the price] is far too much for this game that offers only stunning visuals and nothing else. Sports games are sparse on the Dreamcast, so this was a game most people who own the system hoped would be good, but it's not. All I know is that NFL2K1 and NBA2K1 better be mind-blowing games because if they're not, many sports fans may sell their Dreamcasts and buy a Playstation 2, which will have EA Sports and a host of other companies making sports games. Don't buy this game if you are considering it without renting it first, or else you will probably be wasting [money] on something that is just going to collect dust in a few days. At least the case would make a good drink coaster.

What happened to pride?

It's just ashame. In an obvious effort to satisfy a deadline Sega makes the mistake of pushing an unfinnished product out the door. Now I am hesitant, I don't know whether or not to sell my dreamcast and switch to the new PS2 because Sega does not seem concerned with product quality. This game is horrible. Sure its nice to look at but try playing it. You have no control over virtually every aspect of the game. B4 u buy it at least rent it first and see for yourself. I am begging the dreamcast game engineers Please don't let this happen again, take some pride in what you create, besides this isn't Teletubies or South Park, it's an American past-time.

OK, all the hardcore gamers are tough on this game and that's cool. From a baseball fan's point of view I thought this game was great. You can play against the teams you always wanted to beat. Red Sox vs. Yankees, Roger vs. Pedro OH YEAH! Like all games it takes a while to learn but once you have the basics down I think you will have a ball. Best part...you can put yourself in the game. So, big deal I struck out at Fenway Park. I was right into the game and had a ball. What can I tell you...PLAY BALL!

No fielding, no homerun derby, no fun. This game is all looks. If that is what you are looking for, then by all means, waste your money. On the other hand, if you want a all-around great baseball game, this is not it. You don't control your fielding, timing your swing is very difficult, pitching is useless, and you can't configure your controler. I returned this game fifteen hours after I bought it, and it did not surprise the register clerk.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME.

Do not let your prejudice regarding Dreamcast's previous games cloud your thinking! This is a bad game! The new batting interface is somewhat intuitive, but the game doesn't even let you FIELD! Look at other reviews if you don't believe me! ....... Great Graphics do NOT equal Great Game! STAY AWAY!

not worth it

Can you say over-hyped? This game was supposed to be an instant classic, instead it came out quick because the yellow bellied idiots over at sega wanted to "beat out" the online reviews. If you go to Ign.com or dailyradar.com, youll see what they wanted to beat out. This game is a HUGE dissapointment. All you people who said this game deserved 5 of 5, you make me sick. How many of you actually played it? The fielding mechanics are a joke. the gameplay is weak, you cant play co-op, plus the AI is the equivalent to a second grader's. The game has good player models and a good batting engine though, but these two things aren't enough to eclipse the laziness that shines through in sega's worst sports game. Oh and by the way, most first basemen dont run out of position, and pitchers dont run towards second to field a slow grounder.

Buy Virtua tennis, WSB2K1 is awful

An awful baseball game - No fielding!

I dont understand all the 5 stars for this game. This game was hyped up to be the best and it is really lacking as my review and most of the views by game sites on the web state. First of all, the graphics are good but not great. There is edgy crowd graphics and skippy fluidity of movement around the bases sometimes. Now for the real killer...gameplay. I can't recall one baseball game that doesnt have an option for you to field except for Microleague Baseball back in the late 80's. Thing about that game was that you are the manager, solely...so I can understand this. In this game where it is a new hi tech baseball game to not have an option where the player can move players to field the ball is absurd. I STRONGLY recommend not to waste money on this game if you can't stand playing a baseball game that is as far as real as baseball is.

It grows on you.

I must admit that I was initially disappointed. However, this game grows on you.

The graphics as far as the players and stadiums are concerned are very good. However, the crowd graphics are mediocre at best. This doesn't detract from gameplay though, and I don't consider it much of an issue.

Gameplay is good. You have a lot of control over your pitcher and your batter. However, balls are fielded automatically. I would have liked control over this as well. I also find that players will sometimes refuse to throw the ball when I request them to. This is particularly frustrating when you see a base runner trying to steal a base, and your catcher stands there watching as you pound the A button to the floor trying to get him to throw him out! He usually throws just after giving the runner enough time to make it safely to the next base!

The commentary is practically non-existent. If you're looking for something along the lines of NFL 2K, forget it. The announcer calls the current count and score, etc., and will sometimes add a one-liner, but that's it. I would have liked him to at least enthusiastically yell, "He's OUT!" when I throw a guy out, but no such luck.

All in all, a good game that gets better as you play it. I'd buy it again.

WORST BASEBALL GAME EVER MADE - Don't get ripped off!

This game has the best grapics ever for a baseball game. Its just amazing how real all the players and stadiums look, but that's about all the positive things that can be said about this game. I will never buy another game again without renting it first. This game has the worst game play ever. Someone in Sega decided it would be more fun if the person playing the game could not take control of a player and field the ball. Yes that's right all the defenders are automatic. Its a baseball game that all you can do is hit; there's no defense involved at all. If I wanted that kind of game I should have bought a home-run derby. The hitting is strange instead of pushing a button you release the R trigger to swing. This makes timing the ball near impossible. And almost all the other controls feel unnatural and not in the right places. I was disappointed to hear ESPN baseball got pulled, because this game proves why Sega is a second rate video game company. They hype up a game saying its the best ever and deliver nothing at all. I felt ripped of when I got the game home and played it, I wish I could have gotten my money back. I'm sure everyone who pre-ordered it and ran out to the stores when it came out feel the same way. Don't make the same mistake I did, just wait till next year and hope they do a little better the second time around. This would be a no star game if it wasn't for the grafix.
