Beyond the Hype--An Objective Review of a flawed game

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 15 / 29
Date: January 05, 2008
Author: Amazon User

There has been much hype surrounding Call of Duty 4, and although while a lot of it is warranted at first glance; several problems begin to rear their ugly head in the latest installment of this series. First, let me say that I absolutely agree with others who claim that this is an exciting game with many improvements over the first 3, but that does not excuse bleeding heart reviews who claim that this is the 'best game ever.' Since all of the positives of this game have already been covered, I will simply stick to the negatives. Please bear in mind while reading the following that I am a highly ranked player who has more than 100 hours in the multi-portion in addition to completing the single player several times. While I play this game almost daily, I have noticed many flaws which is why I am rating it a 4 for fun, but 1 overall (due to the fact that I want to counter-balance the hyped up 5 star ratings.)

1) The multi-player matchmaking (peer to peer) system is deeply flawed and results in a lot of laggy and dropped games. For example if the person arbitrarily designated to be the host is downloading files from the net while hosting, or quits in the middle of a game because his/her team is losing, then the game doesn't swap hosts meaning that the game will automatically end. The problem here is that Infinity Ward clearly designed this game with the Xbox 360's terrible match-making LIVE garbage in mind, and this has resulted in an unstable network. Infinity Ward has already patched this game once, but it hasn't resolved the issues. Infinity should have used dedicated servers, because if you have ever played Warhawk on the PS3 or Battlefield 2 on PC, you know that dedicated servers are always more stable. With that being said, it is pathetic that PS3 users have to suffer with 18 player capped matches because Xbox LIVE games are capped at a similar number. I blame this on the lazy developers for providing for such a poor infrastructure.

2) Weapons and Perks give Veteran players a complete advantage over newbies. While all online games require a learning curve and some time to learn the nuances and intricacies of said game, the Perks and high powered weapon unlocks (achieved as a player gains higher levels) are simply unfair. Yes, even though I am a high-level player with most of the unlocks, I will be the first to admit that it has become fairly easy to slaughter certain new-comes due to the damage that high-level weapons inflict. I'm not saying this to brag or what not; rather, I'm just telling you that you must be ready to deal with having terrible gear to use in the first few hours of this game, because you don't have any choice, (other than to pick up weapons off of slain friends/foes.). Moreover, Claymores (i.e. landmines) are one of the best unlocks which a new player won't be seeing until level 20 or so. Like the mines in Warhawk, they will almost always kill you in 1 hit.

3) Helicopters disrupt game-play. While air-strikes are somewhat balanced, Helicopters essentially ruin any sense of balance that this game has. Like gifts, it's better than give to receive them, (as you can amass over a dozen kills with one helicopter under the right conditions). I use them quite frequently, which may seem hypocritical, but hey... I want my team to win. Again, I'm just warning you that they are very cheap.

4) Camping is encouraged in this game. Yes, it's an old complaint and it may be a viable tactic, but I haven't seen this much camping in an online game since Counter-strike. I'm a fast mover in the game and don't like staying in one place, but if you play any other mode than Domination, you will find that most people will camp. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that, but it's somewhat irritating.

5) Most of the perks are useless. Hint: The only useful perks besides Claymores are 2 of the perks that you begin the game with. It seems like the developers put a lot of filler in here.

6) Getting stuck on walls during combat is a sign of poor design. One of the perks (Martyr) allows a player to drop a grenade when they are killed. This perk is somewhat useless in that it rarely works, but when you are trying to run away from a grenade dropped by a Martyr, you will often get stuck on a wall and die from the grenade blast. This happens way too frequently, and is a bug in the game.

7) No option to mute everyone like Warhawk has. Anyone who has played the PS3 online knows that most people who use MICS are prepubescent brats who scream profanities and racial slurs. Fortunately, Warhawk and Resistance allow you to turn off all voice chat, but unfortunately, this is not possible in Call of Duty 4, and there is no way to even mute a player. If you like hearing that lame solider boy song or people's babies crying, then you'll be in for a treat.

NOTE: I ended up buying a Jabra Blue-tooth headset (here on Amazon), to solve this issue, but don't use it to talk... I only use it to filter the sound away from the TV setup to the headset. Still though, it was worth the money to silence some of the other players, and listen to my surround sound in peace.

To conclude, I still will continue to play this game, because despite all of its blemishes, it is still a great game, especially if you hang in there and acquire the best unlocks, (which, again, will put you at a total advantage against most players). This game requires the use of tactics, teamwork and intellect to be a top player, and when you have a great team playing by your side, it is unlike anything else you'll ever play.

Bought the game at around 4pm, got home around 9, played for about 3 hours suddenly the PS3 froze. Next thing I know it's giving me error # 80010514 and the system is not able to recognize any of my other 7 games or any Blu-ray movie. Now the PS3 has to be sent back to sony for service... I only had it for 4 months!!

The game was really intense until German Shepherds were used to be killed.

It really surprised me that I had to shoot a dog in this game. Really sucks!!!

Fancy graphics, weak gameplay, 4th-rate AI. No two player co-op! High difficulty settings means the enemy has perfect, long distance full-auto aim and magical ability to know where you are. This pushes this game from the First Person Shooter to the Fantasy catagory. Rent, Do Not Buy.

Multiplayer Falls on Its Face

It should be a fun and addictive game. However, there are problems with the robot-like single player missions that plagued the earlier versions of COD.

The multiplayer should also be fun, but it becomes impossible to even log in to the game because there are severe server problems. The servers have been down now for over 24hours. When they are up, plan on much frustration as hosts that quit kill your ability to log into another game. The MP can also be buggy and can only be cleared by restarting the entire system. There are no hosts provided by Activision, Infinity Ward or the server provider who Infinity Ward likes to blame for its own online failures.

If you are like me and purchased this game for the online content (I prefer ROFM to this for a FPS single player game), then you will be severly disappointed. A game like Warhawk is more cartoonish, but at least you can log in and see active games hosted by the company that made the game. They also tell you when their servers are down and when they expect them online again.

Oh, and there is the open mic problem. There is no switch to key the mic when you want to speak. Therefore, you are treated to every imaginable background sound to include the sound effects from other people's systems. There is no way to turn it completely off or block the idiots or the occassional rapper who needs to incude you in his aspirations of the gangster high life.

This is NOT the best PS3 game

I can't believe all the positive feedbacks for this game. I only able to play 15 minutes of it and had enough. With the choppy graphics, badly animated characters, I wonder if I was playing PS1 title. Forgive me if you don't happen to agree with my review here, but IMO, do not buy this game. I am glad I rented it first. Worse game ever. Now, I saw Ghost Recon and that is what I call next gen game.

GIANT LET DOWN!!!

This was the worst purchase I have made as far as a game goes for the PS3! I was more impressed with R.T.F.O.M. as far as graphics and game play goes. I bought this game because it was advertised as a number one for one and two player and online.... What a disappointment! Only death match, and the visual feel of the game was in the toilet. the only thing that was nice with this game was the eye candy, and we all know if you want eye candy you buy a Square Soft game like Final Fantasy. I would rather play my kids Eye Of Judgment than ever put this title back in my machine. -10 of 10 simply because of the hype to SUCK ratio!

Multiplayer problems

This is a fantastic game and by far the best in the series. However, the multiplayer mode on PS3 has been riddled with technical problems since release date. The biggest of which have been player stats not being recorded and reset, server instability and server outtages. In fact on the weekend of the games release, the multiplayer mode was completely inaccessable for almost a day.
Before buying i strongly recommend reading through the forums on the charlieoscardelta website to see what the owners of the game are saying.
There is a major patch in the works but as yet there is no E.T.A.
