One of the most common questions presented by gamers about Onimusha is why the developers chose to use static pre-rendered backgrounds as opposed to realtime 3-D environments. Wasn’t Sony’s new machine supposed to revolutionize gaming and do away with everything “old-school”? Well in time I’m sure it will but for now we should appreciate the Playstation 2’s ability to take everything from the previous generation and take it to its maximum potential. Onimusha’s backgrounds while most defiantly a throw back to the early days of the playstation are truly beautiful. Each scene was drawn with such beauty that they often loose the appearance computer graphics and instead take on the qualities of lifelike backgrounds. The Playstation 2’s processing power and increased storage medium allow for an incredible amount of detail to be rendered into the backgrounds. Often time you may find yourself mistaking the backgrounds for photo images of ancient Japan. Yes they are that damn good. In using pre-rendered backgrounds the graphics masters at capcom were able to focus more attention to the chracter designs and the results are just amazing. Simply put Samanoske and Kaede are two of the most realistic looking video game characters ever. Close-ups of these characters reveal striking detail in both body and facial expressions. One can almost feel Samanoske’s pain and anguish as he travels throughout the keep and discovers the true intentions of the demon lords. The bosses are truly awesome as well. Each enemy from the first to final boss has a completely original design and is made up of an incredible amount of polygons. The bosses are so lifelike that you may need to check your undies .... Well maybe there aren’t that scary but they sure as hell gave me the willies. Add to the incredible character designs some awesome FMV and flashy special effects and you have yourself one hell of a pretty game old school and all.

ahh this is where things get interesting. Depending on how you look at it the gameplay in Onimusha can be truly delightful or downright disappointing. My feelings on it lie somewhere in the middle so I will do my best to clear up the confusion. First off for those of you hoping to play a game with controls similar to metal gear solid ( in respect to the directional movement of the character ) you will find your self sorely disappointed. For better or worse,Onimusha controls exactly like its Resident Evil brethren. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this style it simply means you cant move your character in the direction you want him to go by simply pressing the D-Pad in that direction. Samanoske will move according to which direction he is facing corresponded by when the player pushes up on the D-Pad. This can be somewhat frustrating by Capcom has made the shoulder buttons act for strafing and 360 degree turns. The result is something that feels very much like resident evil at first touch but controls much more fluidly and really adds to the quick pace of Onimusha. Add to this a new weapons system based on swords and magic and you can really see Capcom moving away from its falgship series. Instead of Guns (well there is one gun) Samanoske must find orbs and swords that produce magical attacks capable of rendering demons helpless. Samanoske levels his swords up by absorbing the souls of demons. The more demons he absorbs the more powerful the weapon becomes and the more powerful the weapon becomes the more creatures can be slayed. This RPG style element adds a very unique twist to the game and give the player incentive to slash the hell out of some demons. Where as Resident Evil made combat secondary to the puzzle solving, Onimusha makes combat the reason for playing the game. Add to all of this, cool and challenging puzzles and you’ve got yourself a truly fun PS2 game.
Music
Capcom hired one of Japans best Symphonic Orchestras record the music for Onimusha and it really shows. The game features everything you could imagine from a musical score of this type. Haunting Strings, fast paced drum beats to really get your blood pumping and in times of drama or heroism the music adds just the right mood to enhance the scene. Though at times the music can seem repetitive it never gets to the point where it becomes an annoyance. The only complaint I have against Capcom would be their use of the atonal chromatic piano notes used to give the game a creepy horror movie feel. Every Resident Evil uses this sort of song and I am growing a bit tired of it. Next time the guys at Capcom should stick to the beautiful lush sounds played so well by their Resident Orchestra.
Closing Comments
Onimusha is a truly outstanding game but not a revolutionary one. If you are looking for something to show off the power of your PS2 check this one out. Your Dreamcast owning friends will be green with envy when they see this one. If you are completley bored with the survivial horror genre be Warned: this game is could really turn you off. While it does offer exciting new gamplay elements and an excellent storyline, it is still deeply entrenched in its Resident Evil roots. Despite that there still may be enough for you here. Hell at least give the game a rent (especially since you could probably finish the game in about 7 hours.) All in all Onimusha is a fun expreience but for those of you expecting something new you may have to wait to Devil May Cry hits next fall....

I was really looking forward to Onimusha and i can say that I was a little disappointed. I wasnt disappointed at its graphics though. The movies and graphics are AWESOME!! What I am disappointed at is the gameplay and the storyline. I am a fan of survival horror games and I can say that this game IS NOT SCARY!! I never got scared even once. So, basically i'm giving it 3 stars because of the graphics and the movies.
Awesome

I really loved this game. the storyline is good, and the weapon choices are cool too. thonly thing i cant do is 1 puzzle, but thats it. 1 thing bad about it is that the graghics [aren't good] . i mean how are you supossed to kill a boss when you cant see yourself. i would highly recomend this game to anyone who likes a good challenge.
Fun game for the beginner

This game is a lot of fun for those of us that don't have a lot of experience playing video games. Unlike the experienced players who are getting through the game in several hours, I have been playing this game for a couple of weeks. I really like the premise of being a samuri warrior who is battling demons to save a princess. The game takes you through several levels where you kill all kinds of demons with your various swords and other weapons. The graphics are really good and the game is play is very smooth. The only issue I have with the game so far is that they have been putting these long introductory scenes in just before you battle several of the big bosses. So every time a big boss kills me, I have to sit through the whole introductory scene again before I can fight. It can get pretty annoying when you fight for a minute, die, and then have to sit around for five minutes until the game lets you fight again. Other than this hassle, the game is really good for the [money]I paid for it, and I would recommend it.

Ok, I must say this game is worth playing. There are a lot of cut scenes to help you as you go. Must rescue the Princess as she is beautiful. This zombies are like wierd zombies that pop up in different places. As each level increase a new powerful sword is added to the collections.
This game is a lot more fun especially when you make it to the areas having puzzles. It is not hard but it does have some education in there. If you can make it to the dark realms and get the flute there and then you will unlock something there. I still have not finished the game yet. I still have 20 levels to go through.
I would like for you to rent it first if renting it from Blockbuster and you forgot to return it on time because you are busy playing that game. I therefore would suggest getting your own game as it is worthwhile. Now OniMusha 2 is coming out and it is interesting too.... I have two of them and I am waiting on OniMush 3.
So far, I was puzzle by the word OniMusha, until I figure it out meaning Oni=Demons, Musha=Warrior meaning you are the OniMusha warrior and a good one.
Thanks to Capcom for the creation of these games..

I guess we won't stop having better with the PS2 and its graphical qualities and that title is up to it. Both FMVs and in game graphics are up to the PS2 technical specs. It is still using still image though but at least, they look good!
Gameplay itself is pretty interesting and brings a new help with the "Soul Absorbing". So no more reliance on the ... & such like in Resident Evil. Also it's nice to just slash you way through instead of having ammunition.
The other small note of disapointment is that it only takes a few hours to finish the game the first time... All puzzles are also easy, making it faster.
Overall though, it's a game worth while trying on the PS2!
total garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
