A great game, in line after Mario 64.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

Mario 64 had a great run as a game and was one of the first games I downloaded onto my Wii. The only other mario game since then (of big title) has been Super Mario Sunshine, which held similar appeal but didn't deliver as well.

Mario Galaxy comes in with the classic Mario scenerio: Bowser in the opening scene as he captures Princess Toadstool. Mario must collect Stars to unlock various parts of the game in order to get closer to the final goal, similar as with Mario 64 and Sunshine. In the same styles as well, Mario will re-enter the same area multiple times (Painting in mario 64, Galaxies in this one). Each time there is a different objective and another path used to obtain various stars. This structure hasn't changed since Mario 64, and Nintendo shows how it still works great. Also tossed into the game are various new mechanics (or rather unique) that some might find similar to various Mario Party games. In some way, each level has a particular mechanic which gets observed. Mario rides a manta ray like a snow board down a watery shoot without edges, and this scenerio uses a completely different control. Similarly, when mario jumps ontop of a rolling ball and has to move around holes and precarious edges over bottomless pits, again using completely different controls. These new mechanics are not overly used but add challenge and a fun break in the gameplay to enjoy something different.

Mario Galaxy's unique mechanic that differs from other mario games is its use of gravity, as done in variou games used today. Basically, sometimes you'll have Mario running around on the surface of a ball floating in space that isn't much bigger than a house, often times larger. The game uses this in every level in some way. It can be quite trippy if you long jump over the edge of a small platform and find yourself being slung around to the other side.

This also means that the game has a lot of moments when you are controlling mario upside down or as he is walking on a wall. The camera usually remains still in these moments to leave you with a single orientation, but it can get disorienting when the camera freely moves with you. The controls during this game are based on the camera. Whichever moves mario further down screen is Down (except with swimming).

The controls are similar to Mario 64 and Sunshine. The only things that are missing are the belly flop, sort of like a dive head first, and the punch. The Wii remote also controls a cursor on the screen which is used to collect "star bits" and to throw said star bits at enemies and allies. The Luma allies cutely respond to being hit with a star bit as if it is a tasty treat. Goombas don't react that way. The new movement added to the game which plays a big role is the spin, which is used. You'll also see a return of the Fire Flower, the power up mushroom (which doubles your life from 3 to 6).

The game itself isn't overly challenging, especially to the experienced Mario player. Anyone that has played Mario 64 or Sunshine will adapt to the controls like riding a bike. I personally adapted to the gravity mechanic very easily. I can see that this game was made with nintendo's mind on younger gamers as they usually do. However, it does contain optional challenges and "hidden" goals within each level that would require a patient player at least.

I really enjoyed this game and would recommend it to any casual gamer as well.

Hard to give it five stars, but I did

I have come to a point in my life when I have realized that no video game will ever truly deserve five stars. There will always be something wrong with it that I think should be improved or left out. That is what follow ups are for. That being said, I don't honestly believe this game should earn five stars based on my complaints I have about it (those are coming later), however, I think compared to almost every other game out there, this one stands above most of them.

What I like:
1) Mario is Mario and all of the successors to 64 have been fun.
2) They added just enough to make Mario seem fresh and new again without completely trying to invent something new like they did in sunshine.
3) Took complete advantage of the Wii's control system.
4) A second player can help.
5) Graphics are great for what they are. Not a true HD gaming console, and Mario is and always will be a cartoon.
6) The guy that says this game isn't difficult must be the best gamer ever. I struggle now and again and I would assume that any child under the age of 12 would have slightly more difficulty than I would. This game is meant for all ages and I think it achieves that.

What I didn't like
1) The camera has so many problems. They only let you control it half the time and half of that time the control you have won't allow it to move where you want it to.
2) Although the whole gravity thing is great, running from the top side to the bottom side wreaks havoc with the controls. Mario runs around like a moron.
3) The galaxy theme may have been an excuse to not create very involved and in depth levels. When you are done with one part you rocket to another place.

So what will it take to make the follow up better. I think it would need to be a legend of zelda like world that is completely connected instead of the disjointed feeling that the current series makes me feel. It may also be time for us to be able to do more controlling of other characters (Luigi, Yoshi, even princess shouldn't be helpless once in her life). It would also be nice to have a subset that involves all of these characters playing together so you can have some good four player action. The Wii is supposed to be about family fun. Or, add some competitive competition for the four player mode. Surfing against eachother or racing from one end of a level to another. Just some thoughts.

All that being said, I still am enjoying this game and I feel that I am getting my money's worth. For the person that said this game is repetitive, pick up Assassin's Creed and then tell me what repetitive really is. I am glad I watched someone else play that before I bought it. What a let down. But, I digress.

Fun, but....

This is a fun Mario game but it is too easy and repetitive. It's a very visually appealing and I enjoy it, but it's NOT a challenge to rack up stars easily and quickly. Perhaps this game is aimed at a young audience, maybe 8-12, and for them it could in fact be more challenging... but even young children are often pretty advanced in their video gaming skills....

The game is addicting though... I enjoy playing to get just one more star.. I'm glad I purchased it but I've had it two days and already have 52 stars... the game just goes by very quickly.

Fun, but easy

Got this game over a month ago and it is a good game. Fun and entertaining, but pretty easy. The game doesn't escalate in difficulty very much from the beginning to the end. Worth the play, but I was hoping for more of a challenge. I'm working on getting all of the stars (you don't need them all to finish the game) which is more laborious than fun at this point.

Best game

After getting 60 stars we finally finish the game. By we I mean the whole family, with my 6 year old son helping and 8 year old daughter cheering. My son eventually got better than me playing the game. It took us more than 2 months to finish the game. It was more fun than I ever expected. Being a casual gamer, I never had the patience so far to finish a game. But this one is really interesting until the end. Job well done, Nintendo!

From an Old School Mario Fan!

Let me just say I don't hand out five star ratings like they're candy like some people do. This game is truly worthy of five stars. That being said, I'll break it down piece by piece.
Graphics: Excellent. Some of the best the wii has to offer. Very vibrant colors.

Audio: The music and SFX are awesome. I personally liked how they revamped some of the old school mario music and added some twists.

Controls: Take a little getting used to at first because of the gravity mechanics in the game but they work very nicely. Mario 64 veterans will pick them up very quickly.

Challenge: This was the one area that I had a little bit of a problem with. The game can be beaten with relative ease (Easier than 64). Even most of the levels that you don't have to play to beat the game are not all that difficult. However, once you beat the game, there are stages that have you collect 100 purple coins in order to get the star. Many of these levels were extremely difficult. "Luigi's Purple Coins" level in particular brought me to my knees! So the challenges are there if you want them but they are not required.

Gameplay: This is a very fun game to play. It also mixes things up by allowing Mario all sorts of special powers to keep the gameplay from getting monotonous and offers new challenges. They brought back the fire flower!!! (Now if they could just bring back the raccoon suit!)

Recommend to: Mario fans and platform game fans of all ages!

Do not recommend to: Anyone who doesn't enjoy platform games or (Especially) any Mario fans who didn't like the switch from 2D to 3D. (Mario 64)

Lots of replay value

Mario Galaxy is by far the best game out for the Wii right now. Having played all Mario games since the original back in the 80's this one is the most fun since Mario Bros 3.

One thing that is great is the replay value with this game. Not only can you play it for hours just straight through, but the levels are so much fun and have enough hidden content to make it worth playing them over again.

As for graphics, Mario galaxy has a bright colorful look and some of the best graphics on the Wii.

A nice feature is the second player who can help you out by collecting items or helping you jump. They can also hold bad guys in place making it easier to beat them. This works great if you have a child who needs help (or maybe a parent!)

Overall I would recommend this over any game on the Wii right now. It is hard enough to keep it interesting yet easy enough to make it fun for everyone.

The Game Wii Wiill Be Known For.....

For the Playstation, it was Tomb Raider.
For the Playstation 2, it was Grand Theft Auto 3.
For the Xbox, it was Halo 2.
For the Xbox 360, it was (and still is) Gears of War.

Every console has had a game or games that came to ultimately define the system for life. The games utilize every inch of technology the console it was released for had to offer. Even though, they may have been controversial at times, the games spoke for themselves and attracted a whole new level of gamers.

The Wii has had some good games released in its first year of existence but nothing great.... until now.

Super Mario Galaxy hits on all cylinders and utilizes the Wii's technology superbly. I played the demo before the game came out at Nintendo World at the Rockafeller Center in NyC and bought it the day it was released. I have never been more captivated by a game for any Nintendo since Mario Kart Double Dash.

From start to finish this game does not disappoint. The story line is great, the graphics are surprisingly smooth (for a Non-HD console), and the gameplay is perfect.

The game is absolutely suitable for all ages.

This is the game that the Wii will be known for.
(At least until the new Super Smash Bros. comes out)

Buy it. Enjoy it.
You will not regret it.

You can't own a Wii without owning a Mario game!

I'm a huge fan of all the mario games. i was addicted to super mario 64 and was so excited to start playing this on the wii. the new controls w/ the wii remote and the nunchuck are superb, you can still do all the old trick that we all remember from before, but there are so many new things mario can do now. i'm 25 years old and i find this game addictive and challenging still. even though it gets a bit frustrating at times (falling off and dying lol), it's still very relaxing. and if you're not in the mood to stand up and wave your arms around, this is the perfect game for sitting down and relaxing. it's a great game with a lot of new concepts.
the only thing that's a bit annoying is the inability to control the camera angles, sometimes it gets a bit hard to see where mario is going when he's upside down! :)

Never Want to Stop Playing IT!!!

This game is very addicting, there should be a warning sign on how addicting this game is on the case!! 3D animation makes it fun. The controls were tricky at first but I am new to the wii so everything is a bit tricky for me, however once I got the hang of this, I couldnt stop playing. The graphics are much better than I had anticipated. I really cant say more about this game as there are already a gazzilion reviews on this game. I just wanted to add how much it rocks!!!
