This is quite possibly the greatest game ever made. Each galaxy is amazing. The controls are simple and work perfectly. Some galaxies even have 2Dish parts where you feel like your playing the original. The first time i played i went seven hours strait and felt bad when i had to stop to get some sleep.
Comparison with Sunshine

People keep comparing this game to Mario 64, but really the graphics and responsiveness are closer to Sunshine. I believe this is mainly due to the lack of advancement in graphics technology moving from Gamecube to Wii. Therefore I'm going to directly compare these two games, but first some disclosures. I played both Mario 64 and Sunshine, and my personal opinion was that Sunshine was better in many ways. I think the popularity of 64 came from the dramatic jump in gameplay difference upon moving from 2D to 3D, and maybe cleaning up all the "muck" in Sunshine seemed like too much of a nasty chore. Personally, I'm a big fan of Sunshine and wouldn't even be playing Galaxy if it wasn't for the quality of that game.
Given that, I think Galaxy is about even if maybe a little better than Sunshine, which is a relief to me considering all the comparisons to Mario 64.
So what is better about Galaxy? First and foremost, it takes the 3D gaming experience and literally turns it upside down! Can anyone think of another 3D game which utilized a gravity system like Galaxy? This led to a lot of fun level designs and I really felt like I was playing something ground-breaking. Second, the use of the Wii remote to perform certain moves, traverse the universe and collect star bits adds to the excitement of gameplay. Third, the production quality of the game seems a bit higher, with a lot of extras thrown in to help appeal to an even younger game-playing crowd than Sunshine did.
Where is Galaxy worse than Sunshine? Some of these are personal taste issues, but foremost for me is the lack of feeling like I'm in vacation-land. Sunshine was more laid-back and non-linear, which is actually more like Mario 64 and less like the 2D Marios... which makes this game very much more comparable to the 2D Mario games in terms of gameplay flow. By contrast, in Sunshine there was more exploration to be done without being spoon-fed where to go next. But the best part about Sunshine was that I actually enjoyed "being there" in a sense, since the "worlds" were very resort-like in most cases and the music really helped set this mood. The mood in Galaxy is far more "do this then do that hectic rat race go go go." The music quality and level design is still excellent, but I feel that the "mood" of Galaxy is not as inviting as Sunshine.
Second ding on Galaxy compared to Sunshine is the difficulty of gameplay. Galaxy is simply too easy, and there aren't really any "secrets." I remember some of the more hard-won shine sprites in Sunshine were some of the most frustrating gaming experiences of my life, and upon getting those sprites I felt a huge rush of accomplishment. These were the ones where your water tank was taken away and one wrong move traversing a network of spinning tinker toys spelt Mario death. In Galaxy, accumulating stars is more like vacuuming up a row of pennies. Not quite as satisfying. And I swear I've never accumulated so many 1-ups in a game before in my life.
One thing I really miss from Sunshine is the "100 Coin" and "8 Red Coin" sprites. It was a lot of fun to just explore every nook and cranny of each level trying to get those rewards. In Galaxy, once you defeat the game you get "Purple Comets" on some levels, which allow you to get a "100 Purple Coin" star. But even these levels practically lead you by the nose to find those coins. It doesn't require the exploration that the coin sprites did in Sunshine.
In any case, despite my minor complaints compared to Sunshine, Galaxy is still a great game. I only wish it was a bit more challenging, a bit less obvious, and more non-linear... but you can't please everyone all the time. Definitely five stars and probably the best Mario game of all time.

You can play this with your little kids. The second player interacts with the world and helps you in minor ways, but it keeps a kid busy and makes them feel like theyre helping. You could literally play this with your toddler and you will both have a blast.
The game is soooooooo fun. Just pure unaltered fun.
not very challenging

I have a few problems with the game, but small ones.
First of all, I've had the game for a week and have already collected 60 stars. That is a ridiculously fast pace compared to Mario 64. The game presents little challenge in most of its levels. The levels are generally short, and it is easy to collect 10 stars in a single hour if you get on a roll. Not exactly what I would call an epic game. I find myself really getting into a level and enjoying it, and then all of a sudden I see myself right at the star and say, "isn't this just a little too easy?" The pace of the game is too fast. Maybe I am biased, since my favorite game for Wii so far has been Zelda: Twightlight Princess, a game that is very long and which has dungeons that take several hours to complete, but it just seems like this game is not as challenging and LONG as it should be.
With that said, I think the levels are ridiculously inventive, and the graphics are great. The music at times is hauntingly wonderful, and I have a genuinely fun time playing the game, although I am disappointed that it is not more challenging.
Those of you who said that this is the best game for Wii, I have to strongly disagree. Zelda: Twilight Princess is by far the best title for Wii, and probably the best game that has been out since Nintendo 64 launched Mario 64, possibly even better. This is a great game, but Zelda is by far more challenging. The fact that Galaxy is extremely unique is its strength, and I have had a great time playing it, but it is not even in Zelda's league.
Update 12.7.07: I've had the game 3 1/2 weeks now, and I have 112 stars. Some days I don't even play the game, and some days only for about 1/2 hour. The game has become more challenging, but not nearly as tough as Mario 64. Simply put, while the graphics and layout of the game are awesome, it just doesn't present the challenge I expected.
Absolutely fantastic

Where did the last 3 hours just go? I started this game up for the first time tonight, and my whole evening disappeared. I don't know if that's a good thing, but wow! This is just an amazingly fun and addictive game. I can't wait to play it with my 4 year old on 2 player mode.
Short and sweet review: Buy it, you'll love it. If you don't, give it to someone for Christmas. They'll love you for it.

First things first: this is not ground-breaking in the world of video games like Wii Sports. This is ground-breaking in the world of platformers (a type of video game). Expect to see Sonic, Crash, and others copy Mario's latest styles from Galaxy. This game gets addicting quick. You can find more in-depth reviews around the net, so I won't bore you with what you have probably already read. If you own a Wii, get the game. If you don't own a Wii, get that then the game.

I certainly had high expectations for Super Mario Galaxy, but it's even better than I hoped. A Next Generation version of the good ship Super Mario 64. And it seems to overflow with content, promising many hours of play. Slight quibble: The second-player "Co-Star" mode might appeal to some, but having someone else's cursor darting around the screen was distracting to me. Still, the game is so gorgeous, crazy and fun to watch that spectators have a good time anyway. Unbelievably entertaining game, a must have for the Wii.
Awesome Game!!!

Remember the spinning flames from SMB's castles? SMG has 'em! Remember the wrench-throwing characters from SMB3's airships? SMG has 'em! Remember the great music from the classics? SMG has 'em!
If you played SMSunshine on GC and weren't impressed, this game take everything great about SMS (the look and feel), includes a lot of classic characters and music, pushes the graphics limits of the Wii, and makes the controls about as fun as possible! A must for anyone that loves the Italian, the Princess, and a soon-to-be-classic!
This game is just fun.

In a year full double and triple A titles, this game might just be the best of the bunch. With the all games out right now I didn't think I would be playing this game till around Christmas. I decided to just try it out before it hit the shelf for the next month. I think I might have to put some other games on hold till I get through this game first.
The gameplay is really innovative and plain fun. The concept of going to galaxies, collecting stars and defeating baddies couldn't have been done more flawlessly and though it can be confusing at times when running around, since you'll be running upside down at times, you will be able adjust in no time.
The graphics while not power house quality are stellar for what they are. This game looks clean and runs smooth. The controls are as tight as you can get and completely innovative. No complicated button presses or control schemes. The Wii Mote and Nunchuk controls handle flawless. This is definitely not a game that will break your brain trying to figure out the controls. Kudos to Nintendo for implementing a new control scheme for the next gen and having a game like Mario to showcase it. This is obviously a must buy for Wii owners and should be a must buy for Video Gamers in general. An instant classic.
