Super Mario Galaxy is out of this world (pun intended)

Super Mario Galaxy is finally here. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the best platformer I have ever played. Period. The story is typical Mario: Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser yet again. This time she's been spirited away into space, prompting Mario to embark on his most epic adventure to date.

You have never seen level design like this before. The space levels are completely surreal and fascinating. One moment you'll be leaping off the side of a platform, only to find yourself flipping around to stand on the bottom of it. Each planetoid has its own gravitational pull and set of challenges. This game changes your whole perspective of what down and up is. In addition, there are wide open levels reminiscent of Mario 64 and side-scrolling levels bringing you right back to the golden years of Mario games (with new twists added into the mix). As far as level design goes, forget the other platformers. This is the real deal.

The controls are pretty good and allow you to use the Wii remote in fun ways. Everything feels fairly natural. As far as controlling Mario himself, those familiar with Mario 64 will feel right at home. Everything is here, from the triple jump to the long jump. One of the new moves is the spin attack (easily done by a shake of the remote). This allows you to do many things such as smack enemies, jump higher, and activate switches. There are also a plethora of power-ups, many of which we've never seen before.

This game looks phenomenal as far as Wii graphics are concerned. Nintendo has used every trick in the book to squeeze out all the rich eyecandy they could, easily making this the best looking Wii game to date. Not only that, but everything runs at a smooth framerate. The sound effects are great and bring you right into the game. The soundtrack is downright amazing...and many of the tracks are fully orchestrated. There are rousing heroic anthems that really enforce the epic feel of the game. There are quiet melodic ballads that perfectly compliment the levels where you are floating through space. There are even remixed renditions of classic Mario songs.

I really could write about this game for a long time, but I'll wrap it up now. Super Mario Galaxy sets the new bar for platformers...and the bar is pretty high. It leaves any others in the dust and even makes classics such as Mario 64 look like an old game of checkers. If you have a Wii, this is a must own.

Nintendo has done it again!

Well whadaya know? A Mario game has finally come out for the Wii, and it is amazing! The interactivity of the remote and nunchuk blended in with hilarious adventures and good old fashioned fun makes a game that no one wants to miss.
Super Mario Galaxy isn't the first game in the franchise to go off the planet, but it's the first to spend almost the whole game there. When an ancient comet passes over the mushroom kingdom and rains down star power, the Toads rejoice. But then Bowser flies in with an airship armada and (Say it with me now...) kidnaps Princess Peach. Bowser takes Peach into deep space and Mario must rescue her with the help of starlike people called Lumas and their mysterious leader Rosalina. It's up to Mario to gather the power stars- sources of power to the Lumas- and stop Bowser's evil plan.
The levels progress in a simple manner: You choose which galaxy you want to go to and then must complete a mission. During these missions the player explores, moves to different planets, defeats classic and new Mario enemies, dodges black holes, and solves puzzles to reach the star at the level's end. Is it simplistic? Yes. Is it fun? Heck Yeah! Who wouldn't want to fly between the planets and battle huge bosses at the end? There's also great new power-ups (*cough*Bee Mario rocks*Cough*)that add a familiar yet new feel. This one isn't like Super Mario Sunshine where you sprayed water every other second. This one is old, yet new.
I have only two complaints. One, the camera. Yes you can move it, but there are too many areas that you just can't find the right angle to make it work. Two, the multiplayer. If you have a friend over, then he/she can play as a star that collects items and stuns enemies. whoop-de-doo. Why can't they play as Luigi or Wario or someone? Don't ask me, I didnt make it.
But overall, Super Mario Galaxy is a must have. It goes right up there with Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3. If you are a Mario geek, get this game. If you've never heard of Mario until right now (Is that even possible?) then get this game. It's probably the best Mario game I've played in years.

ALMOST Perfect!!! 4 1/2 stars

This game really has it all for a Mario game, almost. The graphics seem to pop off the screen and the game is completely innovative in its design. Sometimes it can be a bit challenging when you lose your sense of direction when things go upside down etc. The issues I have with game only make me minus the game half a star. Sometimes when walking or running the direction of the camera will change making you have to compensate for this otherwise it means falling off of a ledge with instant death! This is a small issue as you can get used to it. The other issue is the racing levels either riding on an animal, swimming or atop a sphere with a star inside. They seem VERY out of place in this game and rely on perfection at times. If you miss ONE little ring in the water level you can't win, this is frustrating and really shouldn't be a required level, maybe a bonus level or so but it just feels so tacked on. If they had removed the racing levels as crucial levels and left them as extras it would have been much better, but its not enough to ruin the game honestly.

In the end, frustrations aside with the racing levels and the odd camera changes at times Super Mario Galaxy is really a pretty cool game! Maybe a Super Mario Galaxy 2 will fix these issues.

It'za Me....Mario!

Ok, if you are an die hard Nintendo fan and DON'T already own this game? What are you waiting for!!! Now for the rest of World that might have heard of Mario but not sure if this game is for them or someone they know.

Mario is Nintendo's Mascot, there are probably a few others but none other then Mario is it! Usually when a console maker makes a game from it's mascot, it is going to not only be good; it will be something special! Nintendo in the gaming community has a reputation of making some of the best games ever made. They have spot on controls, excellent story, and an experience a few others can give you. Bill Gates was asked if one thing he could make the Xbox better, he replied a Mario game running on it. Well too bad because you can only get Mario on ONE machine and it ISN'T XBOX or PS!

Super Mario Galaxy is going to be one of those games that will be around a long time, it might even be mentioned in the same breath as Mario64. As with almost any Mario game out there, you have to set out and save Princess Peach from that baddie Bowser. Nobody knows why Peach can't save herself, but hey it gives us a chance to play MARIO. This time around you are in Space, flying literally from planet to planet. Along the way there are many puzzles, gems, and stars to collect while dealing with all kinds of interesting baddies. And if you just can't stand to be alone, bring along a friend to help you in co-op mode. It's a lot of fun for everyone from about age 7 to 107.

The game will last many hours, but you will enjoy every second of it! Most likely this will be not only the Game of the Year for the Wii, but for all consoles. Don't let someone tell you missed an fun game, get it now!

Very novel gameplay makes Mario a winner on Wii

This game is quite different than anything you've ever played before. As you move through the cosmos, you will be surprised again and again at the creativity behind the level designs. It's simply a game that will make you smile, whether you're a casual or hardcore gamer who has a weak spot for the plumber.

The controls are fairly conventional - you use the analog directional stick on the nunchuk to move and press the big "A" button to jump. Most of the time, the motion-sensitive Wii-mote is only used to spin, which requires only a quick jerk. You'll also use the Wii-mote to point at star bits and collect them, which is relatively entertaining.

Overall, this is a great game - probably the best so far for a great system with a small library.

Mario Is Brought To The Next Level

I have been an avid fan of the Mario games ever since I was a child. After playing Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo Game Cube (which I found to be rather disappointing), I have waited for years for the true spiritual sequel to Super Mario 64, arguably one of the best games in the series overall.

Super Mario Galaxy did not disappoint. The game takes what was good about Super Mario 64 and remixes it with a space age theme.

The controls, which I feel are one of the game's stronger points, are very intuitive. Mario is able to perform many of his classic moves from Super Mario 64 with a similar button configuration. This made it fairly easy for me to transition into this new game. Additional controls, such as the spin dash, are executed by shaking the Wiimote. Using the Wiimote to collect star bits (which is done independently of controlling Mario himself, who is controlled by the Nunchuck) does not get in the way of the game play and adds an additional amount of fun to the game. With a tendency for many Nintendo Wii games to have either unresponsive or oversensitive controls, I would argue that these are the best controls on the console to date.

The gameplay is stellar, although for hardcore Mario fans, it might be too easy. I was able to successfully complete the game in one day and accumulate most of the game's stars. The old formula of star collecting featured in the previous two 3D Mario games has returned. However, the outer-space aspect adds new additions to the game play. Mario is heavily affected by the gravity of various objects in space, such as planets and satellites, and awareness of one's surroundings and effective manipulation of the events and situations are key to solving the game's many puzzles and challenges. Regardless, the paths to obtaining many of the game's stars are often scripted along a predefined path, which is a dramatic departure from the series' usually open-ended nature. What the game lacks in open-endedness, it makes up in its content. And there are still some open-ended areas where you can explore which add a level of realism to the game.

The music is the best in the Mario series to date. There is orchestral music in the game, which is a first for the Mario series. Arguably the best music plays during the battles with Bowser, which have a dramatic, feel and are performed by a choir. The beat, rhythm, tempo and sound of the music often changes depending upon what Mario is doing. Old school Mario music plays in a few of the game's levels, lending a nostalgic feel.

The graphics are the best on the Wii to date. Lush and vibrant colors dot many of the landscapes in the various galaxies. Surprisingly, the "cartooniness" of the Mario games is wedded to the space theme quite well.

Super Mario Galaxy is just one proof that a game doesn't need violence or guns to be successful. The Mario formula has been successful for approximately 20 years and it is the application of this formula that I think can really make a game successful. Super Mario Galaxy is a game that captures the essence of everything Mario is with unique and innovative features that do not damper the game's approachability. It is for this reason I give the game a perfect score.

Too easy? Perhaps. But then there's the added bonus of doubling the game's length if you unlock every feature. And once you beat the game for the first time, additional challenges are presented for the hardcore gamer. In this respect, I think there's a perfect balance.

A Fun Break from Reality

My brother bought this game for his new wii over Thanksgiving break and I found it to be a welcome break from reality. The game is graphically very pretty and being consistent with the Mario universe, the storyline does not take a lot of concentration to follow. You run around collecting mushrooms, stars, coins and in this game pretty little "star pieces" which look like everlasting gobstoppers from Willy Wonka in your efforts to save Princess Peach. Basically, like every other Mario game ever--but that's the point.

I found this to be one of the first Wii games that really takes advantage of the game engine that will allow you to maneuver in a truly 3D environment. It took me a little getting used to, but I found the game to be fairly easy, just challenging enough to keep my attention, which is good when you're looking for a pleasant way to pass a few hours. Though the game is easy to "beat," it's challenging to finish the game 100%, which appeals to both casual players and gamers alike. Plus, the soundtrack is pretty awesome.

I'd highly recommend it to families with young children who are looking for "safe" games to buy their kids this Christmas. There's no pointy edges and no weapons aside from turtle shells.

I had no idea it would be this much fun

I have been playing the Mario games since the original NES SMB. Galaxy is more along the lines of the 3D Mario 64, which was one of my all time favorites. The controls are solid and the way Nintendo included the Wiimote functionality is ingenious! The graphics are good, but only a little bit better than Mario 64. They colors are vibrant and the soundtrack is pretty whimsical. I would really recommend this game to anyone of any age group. Buy it today!
