I liked Mario Kart. I LOVED Mario Kart 64!! and had great hopes for this one. only to be somewhat disappointed. it looks great, sounds like mario kart, and is all very familer. but the gameplay is sub-par. The kart control is non existent, the double team is nothing, and the weapons are littered everywhere, making it fustrating as ...! it involves very very little racing and lots of luck. battle mode is lame too. the most annoying thing is then inability to 'hop', i wish they would have left some of the old control in this title. and left out lots of the obstacles. fun, but not the best Kart.

Just simply a great game

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is just simply a great game. Not only is this game just plain out fun, but the gameplay is awsome. The graphics are some of the best I've seen the Gamecube produce and playing with 4 of your friends is a blast! Now if your looking for a great game this christmas, you might just want to add this one to your list (if its not already there). Just a overall great games with barly any flaws at all. A must buy for every Gamecube fan (much like myself)

I expected this game to be great cause the other 2 mario karts where very good games and it was. In another review someone said that multiplayer gets boring well not if you have friends. I mean if you have friends who can race against you its plenty fun. there is nothing better than crushing your trash talking friend who wont shut up

The things you can unlock.

This game is one of those games that you will keep playing until the next line of consoles come out. This game is hectic one player and even more hectic if you bring friends over. There is the engine size like in all MK games (50cc, 100cc, 150cc, etc.) the higher the CC the faster you go and the harder the AI is. after choosing your cc you get to choose your characters and your kart. You get two characters per kart each charaacter with a special item (baby mario gets chain chomp, DK gets big banana, etc.). after choosing your characters from the list of 16+ you choose your kart. The karts are sorted by weight class (light, medium, heavy). your characters determine what weight class you are in, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. after that you choose between 4 cups (mushroom, flower, star, and special) each with 4 tracks in them. by getting golds in the cups you unlock new content like extra battle tracks and characters.

speaking of battle this is one of the best parts. get your friends together and blow them up in one of three battle types (shine thief, bob-omb blast, and classic balloon battle). in shine thief you want to take control of the shine until the timer reaches zero, get the shine by hitting them with shells, banana peel, or whatever else. in bob-omb blast every question mark block is a bomb and you blow each other up first to 3 or 4 hits wins. In balloon battle you have three balloons and the last one with any balloons wins. Knock your friends out by shooting them with shells to make their balloons fly away.

All in all i think this game is one of the best on the gamecube and i recomend it to all gamecube owners.

Double the fun!

Take all the crazy action of the Mario Kart series...and multiply it by two! In Mario Kart:Double Dash!! Each kart holds two racers that can switch places at any time!! So chose from a huge cast of favorites and pair them up any way you see fit!

A little disappointed, but still good multiplayer fun

Besides the vibrant graphics, extra character/kart choices, and two item slots, I was a little disappointed with Mario Kart: Double Dash. Having spent a good part of my childhood/adolescence playing Mario Kart 64, I had high hopes that Mario Kart for Gamecube would be so much better.

Instead, I found DD to be almost a remake of the old MK64 (minus the above mentioned)...and the new additions that it does have aren't exactly stellar. Remake: The courses (with the exception of a few) mirrored the courses from MK64 - where is the originality? They had similar names, terrain, everything.

Also, double dash? There really isn't a co-op mode in DD: one person is driving while the other is in the back shooting off items (boring, right?). If that doesn't call for a yelling match "THROW IT NOW!!!!!", I don't know what does. It should have been like the originals: one person per kart.

Single player is a little boring, and it takes forever to unlock all of the secret stages/characters/karts. There is the ALL CUP MODE where you race on ALL of the stages. It takes a good 45 minutes at least to complete, and you have to get 1st place in the end for 50 CC, 100 CC, and 150 CC to get any secret items. That's a little too much Mario Kart, even for me.

WHAT HAPPENED TO BATTLE MODE? Their themes sound fun - for example, Shine Thief, the Bob-Omb mode - but playing them isn't as exciting. The stages aren't as brilliant as the ones in MK64 - come on, when does a big square constitute as a stage?

However, I do like the items. There are two slots now! More stuff! Also, with each character there is a "special" item, and those range from Peach/Daisy's item-stealing hearts to Baby Luigi/Mario's Chain Chomp. Worth checking out. However, one new item - the blue spikey shell - is the cheapest item on the block. It hits whoever is in first, and there's no way to block it (even with a Star!), so it can easily knock an experienced player to a lower spot (it's hard to catch up).

I also like the new characters. It's nice to have a wide selection, and you have that in DD. New characters include Waluigi, Diddy Kong, Toad, Toadette, Baby Luigi and Baby Mario, and much more.

Mario Kart: Double Dash is still great for some multiplayer fun. Get three of your friends and just race against each other all day (or night) long. If you were expecting something better since the days of Mario Kart 64, sorry, but you'll have to lower those expectations.

Overpriced - Overhyped and Needlessly Limited

Its a fun little game, but there isn't that much to it. You get 3 different cups to raise, each containing 4 tracks, plus one unlockable cup with 4 more tracks. But there is no way to just pick a single track and race it. Why? What if I just want to practice 1 track that is the last one of a cup? You can select a single track in the time raced by yourself, but not against other, why? The tracks themselves are attractive in a primary coloring book sort of way, but there isn't much difference from a strategic standpoint. Not many alternative paths, no cool things to trigger - they could have been a lot more inventive, but basically they are just nice to look at. The game is reasonaly fun in multiplayer mode, but still gets old after awhile.

There are 16 characters initially, each with a special item, but in reality each attach is given to 2 different chararacter, so there are really only 8 special items, plus the 8 standard one. This sounds like a lot until you realize that item pickup is random so you never no what you are getting and half the time it seems like I never get my character's special item, so what is the point in using them? There are a bunch of different cars, but in realty there are only 3 types that matter, light medium and heavey, because all of the cars of this type handle the same.

Now I won't be so critical of this game if it had a $19.99 price tag which would be about right considering the limited play. But for $49.00 is simply outragious when you compare it to real top flight titles like Soul Caliber and SSX III that offer many times more the amount of gameplay and options.

One last complaint. Why on earth does the game force you to hold down a button to make the kart go? Unless you get stuck and have to backup, you are always going to be pressing it. Is is uncomfortable, pointless and poor design. You should just have to push it once and forget about it.
