I wish I would have read the reviews here before I went to get the game. I have Combat Flight Simulators 1 and 2 and enjoyed them immensely, so I figured I would pick this one up. Especially after looking at the minimum requirements. I have a pretty fast machine (1.6 GHZ P4, GeForce3 with 64M, 256M memory) so I figured it should be no problem, right? Wrong. The game was so choppy that it is almost unplayable and I had the sliders set to the middle.
Anyways, I would not recommend that anyone buys this game. In fact, I'm going to be hard pressed to get another game of Microsoft. It seemed like that was the one division they actually cared about, now apparently they don't.
Not good enough

Taken back to the store. I've been a player of WWII Aerial sims since the good ol' days of European Air War.
CFS1 was medium, it's flight model lacking in several aereas, and this isn't that much of an improvement.
If you want a WWII thrilling feeling, be it ground, air or sea, check out wwiionline.com in stead. /Much/ more fun, not to mention realistic.
Cheers
Too Many BUGS!!!

This sim. has too many buggs to work well. I had to load thee new drivers for my graphics card befor it would run at all and it runs like pooh! I have all the problems that other reviewers had. I also don't get the campaigns, i have flown on all three forces and it is much easyer to win the warif you fly for Germany. Iam very dissaponted in this game CFS1&CFS2 are much better . Don't buy this game!

... In summary, the models are inaccurate, the graphics are poor, the game play is average and the performance is hopeless.
Models
The German planes are incorrectly modelled (the Fw-190 A5 did not carry four MG151s, the 109s are missing the small air scoops on the cowling that identify the G series, the radiator flaps don't move, etc). These are minor things but they point to the lack of attention MS has payed in the development of this program. The Spitfires are no better, and the same sorts of errors are present on most of the planes. It's not good enough to be claiming `as real as it gets'.
Graphics
The terrain is awful: low resolution textures and little pointy trees everywhere. The water textures are unspeakably horrible. It's like going back to CFS1. European Air War looked better, and that about sums it up.
The 3D cockpits, with a handful of exceptions, are disgusting. They have misaligned, chunky, low res' textures and just generally look amazingly bad for a 2003 release.
Gameplay
The flight model takes all the weaknesses of CFS2 and expands on them. The damage model is even worse, except the problems now extend to pitch control as well as roll. At the first sign of damage all controls respond at about 10% effectiveness, regardless of the angles or hit probabilities. So much for MS's vaunted new damage-modelling approach.
The AI is about as good as it was in CFS2, which is to say wingmen are useless and enemies generally wait cooperatively to be splashed. It's like an old Kung Fu movie in this respect. Not challenging.
Performance
The force feedback programming rendered my MS joystick unusable until the release of the service patch. The patch fixed the constant backward pressure on the stick, but not much else as far as I can tell.
The frame rates are terrible and don't seem to have much to do with system resources. I first ran this game on a PIII 733, 256 MB RAM, GeForce 2MX and needless to say, it was a slide show. I next ran it on an Athlon 2100+, 512 MB RAM GeForce 4 Ti-4200 128 MB card, and saw little improvement. There is something broken in this program.
If you want a good WWII flight sim, buy CFS2 or - better yet - IL-2. This game is better left until it appears in the bargain bins. The bottom line for me is that it's not on my hard drive anymore, but the other two sims I just mentioned are. That about sums it up.

I have read reviews that state the you need a top end machine to play this game, that is not true, I have a top end machine and this game still does not play. This game is not worth the box it comes in. If you like combat fight sims, get the older CFS2, or CFS1.
pass on this one , nothing but problems !

microsoft bombed on this one . they should have stayed with the proven format.I run a high end computer, and after trouble shooting for 3 hours I still could not run the game .
if your looking for a good flight sim game , go with Jane's attack Squadron or IL2 . If you must buy it look for 2nd hand or bargain bin , after christmas they'll be tons of them . so bail out before you end up in the drink !

Setup was easy. Compatibility problem with my NVIDIA video card (which was fixed after a quick visit to the nvidia web site for an updated driver). Unlike some other reviewers, no problems with my MS Force Feedback joystick.
Onto the game itself - the plus points of the game are those lovely clouds and err .... that's it. This game is simply boring. The long periods of inactivity followed by a brief dogfight / bombing mission probably reflect the reality of WW2. However, this is supposed to be a game and for those who enjoy shoot em ups, there is probably not enough action for you.
Houston....We have a problem.

I don't like to slam a product, but in this case I will make a exception.
I have both IL-2 and CFS2 and I was hoping that CFS3 would raise the bar on combat flight simulation. I was wrong, CFS3 could have been a good game if not for the very bad flight models. It has a arcade like feel to it, very jerky and all the planes flies the same to me. The graphics would be great if you could turn it up, but what good is great graphics if you have to run them on 2 to 3 settings just to run the game?
Most post made by gamers online is that they are having major, major problems with this game. Lot of hangups and crash to desktop.
There are very few that have reported that it runs fine on their computers....so like Clint Eastwoood would say "Do you feel lucky?" "Well, do you punk?"
Disappointment

How Microsoft ever developed the neat original Combat Flight Simular and then went backwards is beyond me. This new simulator is a real disappointment.
They do not even have a training section for landings... which everyone liked to use in the old package. Or it is too hard to find for if it is there I cannot find it.
UGH....

Very real, very good directions and support. Plan on spending a lot of time reading and studying directions and tactics. Just like being there. But it will not play correctly on Windows Vista, even set to XP compatability.
