Graphical Problems just make it not worth while!

I have a relatively strong system I would say(Athlon 2600, 512 pc3100, 100gig hard, geforce 4600) and I get nothing but stutters!!! I have tried many different configurations, even at low graphical detail, it doesn't stop stuttering! I went the websites that they say to go to for more help, I did what they said, including disabling a few things in the configuration program, and alas, nothing worked! I like the choices of planes, I love to fly sims, but I don't love this game. I would suggest not buying it, unless you can assure yourself a stutter free game. I know that I won't be reloading to my computer, darn waste of money!!!

Unless you've got a warp-speed computer, don't buy it...

My dear wife saw me looking at this game repeatedly (I'm a CFS1 and CFS2 player, avidly) in nearly every store we went to and out of her good heart got it for me for my birthday.

I have a P800 with plenty of RAM and all my other simulators run just fine. When I first tried to run it, it said my video card wasn't supported and I needed to download other drivers. I did so and now the game "runs"...barely. Even with graphics set at minimum detail it looks like a bad cartoon.

I'll continue to play 1 & 2 but until you get the fastest computer ever built, don't get this...

I feel the same as many who have played CFS3, very dissappointed! For the amount I paid and the inability to return it, I feel as though I have been robbed. It does however have the potential to be really enjoyable if only MicroSoft would create a patch to clear up the vast amount of bugs in the program. If you are thinking of buying it wait for a patch to come out.

A Suprising Disapointment

I was suprised by this game, as a fan of Combat Simulator 1 & 2, I thought this game would be an evolution of those great games. Unfortunatly, this title leaves little to be desired. I must set the graphics setting to the lowest to keep the game at a decent frame rate. This game could have been great if Microsoft would have stuck with the same graphics engine as F2002. This game doesn't even feel like a Microsoft Combat Simulator. If you must have this game then save your money and buy this one used!

Do not buy if you have a ATI Radeon graphics card

This game locks up my computer with the ATI RADEON 9700 PRO
card. Both Microsoft and ATI have no fix for this as of 11/07/02
Check out game reviews chat rooms before you buy.It did work slowly with my NVIDIA card

After CFS1 and CFS2, this is a real disappontment. There are many graphics card conflicts. It has the feel of an unfinished product. I have a P4 2.4Ghz computer with 1G RAM and an Nividia Ti4600 video card. Even with this setup the sim is slow.

It is boring - you just don't get a sense of excitement, even in the thick of action.

Take my advice and pass on this. Try IL-2, you'll be much happier.

Good sim

Graphics are a little outdated but still good and the play is very nice. I hope Microscoft will come out soon with CFS4 to go with FS4. I will buy it immediately.

Buy it!

Boring. Missing the following...

The bail out animation is pretty good, but even that is flawed. Once the guy is floating down they warp you to the ground where you see the same sequence again and again of him being pulled along and then unhooking his parachute. It spares you the very long descent, but takes away from the reality. You can see he's landing in the same patch of trees time and again. Would have been nice to see him land in a tree or in a lake, or get captured like in other games, but instead he just takes off his chute and waits to die of... starvation, I guess. Even the enemy doesn't care about him. He's obviously no danger to anyone.

missing-
Take offs too easy. You don't feel you're getting airborne at all... That's not true. It's a little cool, maybe 20% as good as an Il Sturmovik take off.
Landings like a magnet pulls you to the ground. Il 2 you feel like you're between flight and landing because you bounce and it's easy to have your plane lose control in landing. Not in CFS3.
Damage is boring. This is way undermodeled.
Can't switch view to other planes.
Can't watch the battle after you're dead.

Can't pan the view when you're in the cockpit. Snap views are quick, but disorienting. You also can't move your head around to some inbetween spots.

Can't drop a bomb and then watch where it goes while your plane is on auto pilot. You can hit shift f9 and watch a flyby. You can even drop the bomb on uninhabited buildings while in flyby, but you'll be too busy flying your plane to enjoy the impact. The best thing would be an instant replay where you can drop the bomb from in the plane and fly away and then watch it from whatever view you wanted in replay and you'd need the ability to speed up and slow down time too.

Missions feel like the same thing over and over. I'd like to emphasize that.
Targets are the wrong size, often hard to find and not that interesting to hit. I did a mission with 1000 lb. bombs where it looked like I was taking out a foot path bridge on a bike trail. It was so exciting to see that thing get little holes in it and smoulder a little.

The engines don't sound that powerful.
The guns don't sound great either and you only see a small fraction of the bullets actually flying.
Bullets do not whiz past your cockpit when you are being shot at, but you do get hit with a lot of text telling you where you got hit.

Flak is about 30% as good as Il Sturmovik.

Flight sim designers are weird and I guess their fans are too. They're more concerned with accurately rendering a perfect model of a plane than they are with anyone having fun. CFS3 is the result of this. Beautiful planes, complicated, frustrating controls and dull, dull gameplay. Stupid things are included to make you think that maybe someone was trying to sabotage this game, like the way that red thing pops up and asks if you want to go to debriefing. There's no way to get rid of it except to go to your mouse.

The cities are pretty boring. Everything looks the same.
The clouds are great.
The pilot looks bored and lonely.
The music sounds like it was written for an atari game in 1978.
All the other pilots sound bored.
No Hitler or Churchhill or anyone.
Manuals that tell you things you don't want to know.

I just needed to get this off my chest.

Don't believe the hype!

This game was a waste of my money. I have CFS 1&2 and this version was a step backward. Frankly I was shocked that Microsoft would release such an inferior product. Save yourself some bucks and buy CFS1,it runs flawless and is very user friendly.

Not particularly impressive

This is not a very good sim. If you want an outstanding combat flight simulator purchase IL2 Sturmovik 1946. I should have known better than buy this Microsoft turkey. I've been playing all the versions of IL2 since 2003 and it's still the best. IL2 + TrackIR + Saitek X52 joystick and throttle + Saitek rudder pedals = many hours entertainment.
