Well there isn't much that I can cover that already hasn't been thorougly explained by previous reviewers, so I'll just tell you that this game is unbelievably engaging from the second things jump off. The gameplay keeps up with the storyline, and you'll probably find yourself playing several parts over again to finish off your adversaries via the various means the game presents. Max Payne (himself) is like the Elliot Ness for the new millenium and although I've only played a demo of the first game, I can assure you that this is above and beyond a more than worthy sequel. My co-favorite game (with Metal Gear Solid for the PSOne) that, thanks to modding, has remained a mainstay in my CD Tray.

To begin with, Max Payne 2 has some great features, including extended bullet time, being able to play as both Max and Mona, and more/better quality in-game storyplay (you see the story in video format as well as the comic format more so than in the first one). Playing as Mona is also really fun because you get to try out certain weapons more, such as the Dragunov. Many of the levels involve a lot more than shooting up everything and are much larger and dynamic than the levels in the first game. One of my favorite chapters in this game is called "Mob War" where Max is flung in the midst of a war between the Mafia and the Russian Mob in a street block of run down tenements (and yes, they do shoot at each other when they aren't shooting at you). When you have beaten the game you also unlock these really cool and fun "Dead Man Walking" scenarios, basically they are certain game areas where enemies respawn and you have to survive as long as you can, and the game keeps your best record time.
I personally liked the first Max Payne much better than this one for many reasons. First of all, the guns in the first one have a much better "feel" (for lack of a better word) to them; at least the berettas, ingrams and the pump action shotgun all have better sounds, fire faster, and actually look better (some people might disagree due to realism, but it's just my opinion). Second, the storyline in the second game pales in comparison to the first. While you get to see a lot more of the characters, the storyline in the first game is a little easier to follow and has more of an mystery to it, in the second you pretty much know whodunnit or can at least make a good guess fairly early into the game. There is also a more diverse pick of enemies (yes, because I like to be able to kill lots of different kinds of people) ranging from bank robbers to mafioso to corrupt cops to gothy club bodyguards. You also get A LOT more monologue from Max in MP2... and as has been said before, the empty metaphors get a little monotonous and aren't as good as his lines in the first (Seriously, how can you beat "And me, I made out like Chow Yun Fat" as a lead to a great shootup?). Also, I just have to say it, Vlad has such a horrible voice in MP2; in the first game he actually has a Russian accent, but in the second he sounds like a bad Dracula impersonation: "Maaax dearest of all my friends... I vont to suck your blood!"
One other thing to consider, in MP2 there are only two bosses, including the finale. While again this may make the game a little easier and realistic than the first game (I mean really, who can still stand after having two ingrams unloaded into them), it kind of takes away from the meat of the game.
I'm not trying to rag on MP2, I liked playing it a lot. I'm just trying to stand up for the first game, especially for those of you who haven't played either. In terms of storyline and weapons I feel that MP1 is superior, but MP2 definitely has great features, and definitely improved a lot of the gameplay features.

From what I have played, not much has changed. The plot is relatively the same, (although much less involved as the first.) It is still just basically getting revenge for the murder of your family, legally this time. It has the all to familiar been there done that feel to it.
Bullet Time is better, but not that much better. If you've played the first Max Payne and accidentally played Enter The Matrix, it is also a been there done that experience.
The Graphics engine is much improved. Max does not have the stinky feet (or constipated) expression that we had to suffer through in the first game. He looks a lot better along with the other characters models. The environments look quite realistic and the partical effects when bullets hit surfaces are pretty.
The A.I is another great improvement. The enemies will use much better tactics and will not just walk around a corner to get mowed down. They will use tactics and flanking maneuvers along with throwing grenades if the conditions are right.
After all these improvements, it is not that much better or different than the original. It is a been there done that experience. It seems like a 50$ expansion pack with better graphics.

How much fun is this game? Five stars in my book. Sure some will say that it is a little short. I didn't find that to be a dissapointment. The graphics, the action, and the story were enough to make it worth the price of admition. This editions is an improvement on the original, with a better image, smoother motions in character movement, and better cinematic scenes. If you liked the first one, you'll love this one. It is one of the best games on the market. Designed for current pc equipment, it might have problems on older systems, but then it's time to upgrade anyway.
Enjoy playing this game. It is like stepping into a movie and you are the main character.

when i first played this game i thought it was a movie. the people look like they are photoghraphes of real people. Also the game play is ultra smooth. one of the best games ever. a perfect follow up to Max Payne

You really can't find a better game; perfect graphic and sound. Hard to image it's developed by the same company that produced GTA series which I think they are horrible. For an action game, there's nothing more you can ask for. If I really have to come up with something, that'll be too short for the game and a weak story. But who cares that much about story for shooting games?
Awesome game, albeit with little replay value.

This game is a worthy successor to the classic Max Payne, which brought action gaming to a new level, with beautifully drawn comic-book shots that drive the game graphically and emotionally.
This game is basically a rehash, or an upgrade if you will, of the original game. The graphics are noticeably better while the Havok physics engine makes the game feel clustered and more real than before. My only reason for not giving this game a perfect score is for it's length, which is very short, and little replay value. You'll probably beat it once or twice, on a harder mode to get the alternative ending.
If you're looking for an action game with great graphics, lots of fun (you're your own John Woo as you ballet through the levels, guns-ablazing and using Bullet Time!), look no further! Just don't expect a long game.

I was really into the first game, not because of the violence and gore effects. But because of the story line. Max Payne has amazing story lines that really get you into the game. The Opening Suite is great, the characters are unforgettable, and the Closing Song, "Late Goodbye" by the music group Poets Of The Fall really make this game worthwhile.
Ive played both games over and over again and know them like the back of my hand.
If you are a fan of the game, like me, you are currently in angst due to the rumours of a possible movie and third title...
Same as the first Max Payne ... avoid

For a sequel that does nothing but merely repeat the original except for little graphics decorating, Max Payne 2 fits the bill. If you like(d) the original Max Payne AND want more, then this sequel may be what you are looking for. If, however, you didn't like the original Max Payne or are just plain bored of it, then forget the sequel and save your money for better games ahead.
