Great game, falls a little short!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 4

With some of the best controls on the market and graphics that were suprissingly better then the first Max Payne 2 had all the great aspects the first Max payne had, but fell through when it was time to deliver. If you played the first Max Payne then chances are you will buy this game hands down, possibly for story reasons. However Max Payne 2 does not live up to its former self. With only about 12 hours of gameplay it is possible to sit down and finish the game in one sitting. Before long you will be engrosed with the so-so plot and end up just wanting to beat the next level to see how everything plays out, but when the game comes to a sudden stop, you will find yourself asking "Thats It?" Max 2 still has the great action elements that made the first one such a hit, and with unlockable difficulties you may find yourself playing through this game more then once. Nothing new is added (sadly), so if you liked the first Max you will probably love this one, but there is not enough change to sway new players into buying this game!

Love is PAYNE..

Max Payne 2 is an amazing achievement from Remedy games. The sequal stays true to the original max payne. The visuals are great, the inviorment is just pure sweet and the game just looks good on the PC...my pc sucks but it still looks amazing on it. The sound and music in this game is top notch too, sadly the game is pretty short VERY SHORT. But sweet...like...cherry pie.. I'm going to make this review short and sweet..

The Good
-Superb Visuals
-Top notch sound and music
-Very detailed rooms and you can pretty much do fun stuff with the items in there like knocking off a computer or chair..
-A very good and somewhat depressing story
-This is the only version of Max Payne 2 that'll let you play the game as Mona Sax fully Nude and uncensored...this really is a Mature game..

The bad
-really short
-I loved this game but they could have made it WAY LONGER!!...I know this is the same as just being short but I had to say that
-This game is really Mature, it's like almost realistic if you ask me, violence, strong language, sexual content and full frontel nudity means NO KIDS ALOWED..
-The way this game ends breaks my heart...I hope they make a 3rd Max Payne

Max Payne 2 is just a Really good Pc game to play, it will probably get rid of your stress with the great action it has, it's abit repetitive but it's still a great game.. Other then the game being really short it's very high quality pc game that no one with a good or semi Good computer should miss out on...SCREW THE CONSOLE VERSIONs...I give this a

4.2 out of 5 stars..

Short but amazing nonetheless

I've never, in my entire life, been addicted to the demo alone. I swear, it's NEVER the same each time I play it. My retail version is in the mail, but I can tell you right now, this game kicks serious butt.

Even if you finish the single player game, there's always more MODs to install.

Graphics
---------
10/10 - Amazing graphics; physics is amazing since MP2 uses Havok. Textures are crisp and clear.

Performance
---------
20/10 - EXTRAORDINARY. I'm using a P3 700Mhz (OC to 807) and a Radeon 9800 Pro. Wow, it hardly slows (only in big firefights). Other game makers should take a hint.

Sound
---------
10/10 - MP2 is very "noir" (melodramatic). The storyline is still very good and the voice acting is wonderful, very cinematic. The bullet time slows down the sound and sounds very cool!

Gameplay
---------
10/10 - My favorite. That's what keeps me coming back and playing again! I love shooting the gas containers and making them explode, the physics are awesome. AI is great, it's pretty challenging, luckily there's enough painkillers to keep you full health!

All in all a top-of-the-line game. Only gripes are no multiplayer and short game (8-10 hours total!). Maybe you should try Used version, or rental (for consoles).

Outstanding, cinematic gameplay, good story, so-so levels

There's a lot to like about this game. It has an actual STORY to go along with the action, which is pretty rare for an FPS game. The graphics are beautiful, and the voice acting and sounds are very well done. The gameplay is outstanding. I bought Max Payne 1 and 2 together, and while the Bullet-time implementation in MP1 is good, MP2 is even better. Part of this is because MP2 uses the Havok physics engine, which causes objects in the environment to react to the player's actions in a lifelike way (for example, if you run into a small chair it will fall over). It's so good it's nearly cinematic! I replayed a few early encounters several times just to see Max in Bullet-time, dodging, firing and reloading -- all of it's executed brilliantly, and a visual treat.

The game does have a few weak points. The story is weaker, less noir-ish than in MP1. There's a twist in the story, but it was such a break with the MP1 story that I had a hard time swallowing it. And they ended up killing so many of the original characters, sometimes it seemed they were killing the characters off for the heck of it. On the other hand, the novel telling the story was much improved over MP1 (less obfuscation and bombast), so perhaps those cancel out. I also felt that the level design was rather uninspired at times. For example, there are two or three pairs of levels where you climb to the top floor of a building, then climb back down. Not very imaginative. Finally, there is no possibility of stealth gameplay. This can be quite a surprise if you've played games like No one Lives Forever 2 or Splinter Cell. You can't shoot out any lights. Worse, enemies have "radar sense" -- they'll see you the instant you enter an area, even if you're hiding behind a car and a hundred yards away. This can be annoying at times. On the whole, though, gameplay was so smooth that these drawbacks seemed minor to me.

Between MP1 and MP2, I liked MP2 much better. Several aspects of the original have been improved in MP2: the graphics (obviously), the storytelling (though not so much the story), and the gameplay. Of these, the major enhancement was the gameplay. The game's pacing is *MUCH* better controlled than MP1's frenetic pace: kill 5 enemies, turn a corner, kill 5 more, open door, kill 5 more, walk down ladder, kill 5 more and do it all with no health packs ("painkillers"). Playing MP1 was a reload-fest for me; not at all enjoyable. In contrast, MP2 is paced more reasonably; there are a few puzzle solving levels and dream levels between the fighting levels, and in the fighting levels, there are areas to let the player catch their breath after a major battle (and even watch TV!). On the default difficulty level, I needed to reload just a few times - a big plus in my book.

On the whole, I'd recommend MP2 to anyone who likes FPS games and/or action movies. Hopefully there'll be a sequel to this series which combines the strengths of the story of MP1 and the gameplay/graphics of MP2. Maybe it will reveal that Max Payne is a comic-book character and the *real* heroes are Captain Baseball-Batboy and Bicycle-Helmetgirl. :-)

Dark, enjoyable and sexy game

This game sequel is darker and more bitter than the previous game. You get to play Max Payne and Mona Sax (a femme fatal assassin) in different scenarios. The atmosphere, music and gameplay are similar to Max Payne 1. You can jump sideways while shooting at your enemies and do all the movie like stunts (roll over and more) like before.
This game is very much like watching a movie. It has a great plot that really hooks you in. I played this game so intensively it was over too soon...

Way above the P S2 Version- Simply Put, it kicks ace!

I ve had and played MP2 on the PS2 for a yr and finally grabbed a PC copy. The AI is better on the pc, not totally different, but a bit better (For instance, there may be a few more explosions or enemies per level as opposed to the PS2 version and on the PC, they seem to be more aggressive). It is a little hard to get used to the controls, keyboard/mouse, while they are not bad they will take some adjusting too.
Ive got a very strong pc, and a decent vid card, the graphics and sound are both superlative! The real benefit of the PC version is getting all the created levels and mods! There are between 30-40 levels/mods you can get free online for this game! Surely worth 10 or even 20 bucks.

Max Payne 2 is a good action game and when I say action I mean action! Fun to play by all means. Story is a good one. My only complaint is I wish there was more bosses then just one at the end of the game thats all.

Worth every penny

When the first Max Payne came out several years ago, it was a leap. It was the reason that I bought a PC instead of an expensive console. At the time, you couldn't get a better shooter on the PC. Times change however, and so did Max Payne. By in large, for the better. The graphics are better. Much smoother. The first game had a real comic book feel to it. Max Payne 2, while still having the storyboards, seems to be more like a movie. I thought the gameplay had everything, and more, that the first Max Payne did. More weapons, better graphics, more dark, and a long complicated storyline. The relationship between Mona Sax, and Mr. Payne, ends up distracting from the game unfortunatly. It makes for some cheesy cutscenes. The voice acting, and dialog are painful at times. It's ok for a game like this to have some vulgarities in it, but the half baked voice overs make them hard to listen to. Overall, this game had me booting up many, many times, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Defective Copy Protection Ruins Game

If you're fortunate to have one of the CD drives this game supports, it's decent, however there's no way for you to know ahead of time. Their tech support is near worthless with my request for help having them tell me that I need a second computer to test it on... Yes, to get support you apparently have to have a computer lab to verify on. The game worked on my old CD drive, the only difference is a new DVD drive. My other DVD drive in this computer won't work either. They've had this long w/out patching their cruddy protection? They aren't going to if they haven't by now. Avoid this like the plague unless you feel safe downloading a no CD crack or need an expensive beer coaster.

I loved "Max Payne". From the day I bought it, I was hooked. I finished it, and anxiously awaited the sequel. When It cam out, I played it over at a friends house. I still have not bought it. I was just disappointed with how they took the storyline. In the game, there's no mention as your playing, of the first game(unless you play the "previously" video in the game). Secondly, Max looks NOTHING like he did in the original! I can understand that times change, and I read how super looking max now is, compared to the original, but His looks didn't strike me as great. Medicore, I would say. And last but not least, if you don't have high specs for this game, don't even bother wasting your money, or downloading the demo(especially if your a dial up user). It's just not worth it. I'll stick with the original instead, this game, in my opinion blows goats.
