Very, very fun... but slow

Okay. This isn't going to be a full-fledged review, as I did not have much time to play it when I did, so take that into consideration when reading. Overall, I found MechWarrior 4 to be thrilling --- it consumed my attention entirely. I found the graphics to be awesome, and the realism of movement was very nice. Essentially -- a wonderful game. I found one large drawback, however. As long as one was not involved in mutual combat (you're firing at an enemy and the enemy is firing back at you), the framerates were smooth. The moment I got involved in mutual combat, however, the framerates dropped so steeply that everything locked up for about 1-2 seconds --- not fun, epsecially for such a fast-paced game where every second counts. I was puzzled by the whole thing, since I was playing on a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 with a 32MB Riva TNT card and 128 MB RAM (okay, not much RAM, considering, but come on). Now I am even more puzzled after having discovered that system requirements for the game are drastically below that of said machine. Hmph.

great games, for the non-perfectionists

this is a GREAT game. I've loved every minute i've played on it. The gameplay is excellent, the new mech-lab gives different mech an identity, the graphics are good, the sounds are great, and it had alot more storyline then mech3 ever did. And on top of everything, the multi-player, the best part of the game, is very good as even u dial-up users won't have to worry about lag (unlike mech3, where u would have to shoot 4 mech-lengths in front of the mech in order to hit it because of the lag). However, u hardcore Mechwarrior fans may find some things about the game that aren't realistic or right, which is why im cutting it down to 4 stars. Heck, im one of them, but im not the perfectionist that SOME ppl are. ....

Lacking in many respects

I must admit, I had been a little out of the mechwarrior loop for a while, and then decided to get back into it with MW4. I never played MW3, but I was a fan of 2, so if I blame a change on this game that occurred in 3, I apologize.
I found this game falling short of many of the expectations I had for it. The graphics were better than 2, but not nearly to where I would have liked to see them. The enemy mechs tended to look two-dimentional, not to mention their drivers were particularly stupid as far as tactics. For example, if you don't shoot at them for a while, they tend to forget that you're even there, and they walk away. Weapons look ok, although I was partial to the PPC looking like a sphere (as in MW2) and not a bolt of lightning.
Weapons in this game fall into groups; no two ways about it, you have to group your weapons. If you want them to chain fire (as I like to), it's lot more work than it's actually worth. I've learned just to live with it.
I would also like to know whose bright idea it was to change the name of the "Timberwolf" to "Mad Cat." That's more of personal qualm, since my favorite was the timberwolf. It's hard to bring myself to pilot a mad cat. I also do not believe that Mechs should have faces (see "Atlas" for example). They don't look intimidating; they just look stupid.
The movies are nothing special; and the acting is absolutly terrible.
Also, some of the features seemed a little unbuyable, such as the anti-ballistic armor. What is that, foam rubber covered in bubble wrap?
This game is also far to easy. Even on the hardest setting, it's too easy to blow away your enemies.
However, the multiplayer is very cool; I just wish there were better people out there to play against. It still plays like a classic mechwarrior, and it's still fun to blow the you-know-what out of everything. Even Microsoft can't screw that up.
I'd recommend finding the game somewhere for cheap, just to get a mechwarrior fix. MW2 is, in my mind, much better, but it doesn't work with Windows NT/XP/2000, which is really a shame.

Great Story, Excellent Graphics, So-So Interface

The graphics in this game are the reason I own a computer. This game is excellent. There are times I forget that it's just data, streaming from my monitor, and not actually big robots and cars and trucks and planes....

The storyline in this game was great. With real actors playing the characters, having little video clips play on your video console during the game, really gives it a 'real' feeling. You have friends, family members, and even a few bad guys sending you messages you can view. This really keeps the story interesting.

Speaking of the story....You are Prince Ian. Your family rules a planet, or ruled a planet that has been taken by another ruling family. Your family is dead, and you've come back to set things right, and to free your people.

The interface was the one thing I had a problem with on this game. The targetting system is closer to that used in Mechwarrior 2 than the one (which was excellent) in Mechwarrior 3. This made combat without a joystick very difficult, but then, as Microsoft came out with this one, maybe that was the point. They want me to buy a Sidewinder. Anyway, it was difficult, and affected the gameplay. If they combined the targetting system of MW3 with the rest of the features from MW4, I'd be in hog-heaven. Overall, this game is excellent.

So climb inside your mech for a bit of mechwarrior style vengeance! You'll feel better after you've crushed the invaders!

good game, bad balancing

Like all mechwarrior games, this one has too many controls to memorize. Aside from that, the graphics are stunning (the exception being the badly acted movies) the mechs are badass and the overall game pretty good. Unfortunately, most of the enemies in this game seem to require ungodly amounts of damage to take down making it nearly impossible to take on more than two or three enemy mechs before your own chassis is a smoldering ruin. I miss the good old days when a single alpha strike from a 100 ton atlas pretty much busted up anything that moved.

Great gameplay for a beginning mechwarrior.

I have played Mechwarrior 3 in the past and really enjoyed it. This game is much better by far. This game had everything. Lots of various levels. Plenty of upgradeable mechs. A pretty good story line and great graphics for it's time. Get a good a joystick and go kick butt.

Mechwarrior 4:Vengeance is a tight game. The graphics are awesome. Its challenging but also very easy. The game also includes multiplayer where you get to play online. My favorite thing about this game is master trials. For a 5 year old game its one of my best favorites. Thats why I rate it a perfect 5.

I've played all four Mech games but this is by far the best. it has lots of action, plenty of gameplay, and outstanding graphics. I recomend this game to everyone above ten years of age.

how it works

The game is the best yet that FASA has worked together with battletech to create. The voice in part are a little humorous and the missions can be a little choppy. The option for ejecting from the mech has become nonexistant any more. The weapons are better and worse cause the game play with them is limited. All of this boils down to an awsome graphics monster and a one on one toe to toe heavy metal battle field expirence that still has time to make it a family thing. In all I think its great but still has its flaws.

A good, though not great, game

I have to alter my opinion of this game. I previously didn't like it much because it wouldn't run on my computer, but after souping the ol' machine up, now it works.

The gameplay itself seems quite fine -- there is the usual variety of mechs to experiment with, and the usual selection of terrain to fight over. Of course, I haven't played the other mechwarrior games yet, so I have no basis for comparison there; but this seems adequate -- good graphics, lots of action, and quite challenging on occasion. Only a few missions in I got blown up several times and only barely pulled off the Arctic 2 mission while piloting an assault mech of the toughest kind, which to me is a recommendation.

Still, from a technical viewpoint, the game leaves a bit to be desired. My computer now FAR exceeds all the listed system requirements, but even playing on the lowest graphics settings the game gets very, very slow when several mechs are in a battle at once. The system even freezes once in a while, though this is rare.
