The Mechwarrior series has been one of my all-time favourites, having said that, Mechwarrior 4 and MW4 Mercenaries has been a bit of a disappointment for me, the physics and graphics seemed quite unrealistic, very arcade-ish when compared to that of Mechwarrior 3, but thats just my opinion. Now don't get me wrong, this is truely a great game and theres lots to love about it, my favourite being the components slots in mechlab, the fact that you can only put certain weapons on certain hard-points of a mech adds so much realisim to the game. This is how it is in the Battletech world and this is the way it should be in the Mechwarrior world! Hats off to Microsoft for adding this feature. In terms of game play, Mechwarrior 4 shines brightest when you take it online... you will be hooked! Join a house, merc unit, clan or go solo and battle it out against others on the world wide web. Whats better then putting a couple rounds of AC20s through that sucker that just happen to end up between your crosshairs! It gets even better when you discover theres so much more you can do - examples: team battles and co-op battles... the list is large and there is just so much support for this game, its unbelievable. If it weren't for the physics and graphics, I would have given it a 5, none the less Mechwarrior4 is a great game and it holds it own with a very definite 4.
doesn't do justice to the MW series, MS, or games in general

This game was a major disappointment for me. And I think that a lot of people who played MW3 will find it disppointing as well. The main problem I have with this game is the controls. I see people saying "oh, they have really simplified the controls!" but is that a good thing? No. Anyone who was thrilled as I was at the endless customization possible in the controls for MechWarrior 3 will be sorely disappointted at mw4. And anyone who prefers to play games like this with a keyboard/mouse setup will be disappointed. The game has added nuances that should be improvements over the previous installments, but fall short. It is almost like they spent too much time on appearance and not enough time on playability.
Specific problems I find with the controls are the way the 'Mechs turn. It is much more difficult to aim while turning in mw4 than in the previous versions. This makes using a stick that much more important. But the problem with using a stick is that it makes also using a mouse or trackball difficult. Since it is hard to aim with a stick, and it is hard to aim turing with a keyboard, you must forget everything that you used in mw2 and mw3 and "learn to pilot a 'mech all over again." In addition, certain controls can only be set up for certain things. This is different from mw3 in which you could set up any controller axis for any "analog" control... for example, if you wanted to set a control stick up/down to walk forward/backward, you could. If you wanted to reverse that axis, you could. MW4 lacks flexability.
I do not mind using a stick so much to make the game playable, but a stick has nowhere near as many buttons as the keyboard, so having everything at your fingertips is a thing of the past.
And one more thing: people say the graphics are so much better, but i do not see it. The 'mechs, buildings, etc, are in fact uglier to me than they were in MW3.
pros: (i can find little about this game that i would consider improvement over MW3, but i will try...)
-new 'mechlab setup makes 'mechs less customizable, but should reduce the "boating" so prevelant in previous versions
-weapons seem very balanced, perhaps over-balanced, which should produce more variety in configs from player to player
-lag is less of an issue, and "lag-shooting" is no longer necessary
-now have nightvision, but it sucks compared to the thermo vision in mw2
-no more worries about legging
-self-destruct and eject are now options
cons:
-opponents can now see what 'mechs you are bringing in multiplayer
-there is no "team chat" in multiplayer before the game is launched
-keyboard/mouse controls almost unusable
-controls not nearly as customizable as mw3 or even mw2
-game storyline is not nearly as interesting as mw2 or mw3
-graphics require a god-like agp to run (such as GeForce 2 or Radeon-this is not so bad now, but when the game was first released?)
-no more mfb's (there are, however, stationary repair bays)
-lancemate AI is still bad-they get stuck behind builings in city maps
-colors of weapons slots in the mechlab could cause annoyance for colorblind players (red for energy weapons, green for missile weapons)
-'mechs have internal structure, but the entire internal structure is connected. therefore, you cannot destroy a leg (or arm) until you destroy the entire internal structure of the mech. Unfortnately, this makes it easier to destroy a 'mech by shooting through the lighter armored parts.
-'mechs blow up no matter how they are destroyed (often quite annoyingly... since when do 'mechs explode after a clean head shot or a legging?)
-I could go on.
If you loved mw2 but were disappointed with mw3, you will probably love this game. but if you loved mw3, definitely play the demo first. You stand a good chance of tossing this game out the nearest window in frustration.
a dam good game if i ever saw one

the cadilac of mechwarrior games. if only they kept the names of the original mechs like the mad cat was called the timber wolf, the vulture which was the mad dog, the loki was originaly the hell bringing, i just wish they kept the old clan names that they started with. but any who this game has crazy good graphics, almost to easy to learn controls, (i kinda miss having to you the entire key board to drive my mech) your lance mates get better with more experience with is great, your salvage is what you use in the next missions. the plot is the best mechwarrior plot i've seen so far. this is like the beginers game if you want to play all the mechwarrior games. this is still a 5 star game.

I have never been more addicted to any computer game. The single player game is fun and challenging, full of surprises, nice cinematics, and has an engaging plot. The REAL FUN starts after you beat the game, and touting the courage of a champion, you step into the multiplayer world of Mechwarrior4.
There is a whole culture to learn, where players form and join "Clans" to create well organized and cooperative teams. The multiplayer game has many different game types. There are adrenaline pumping team games with up to 16 players on a map, violent and fast free for alls, capture the flag, and more. I have been playing mechwarrior online every day for about 9 months and I'm not sick of it yet. Not even close. I loved Mechwarrior2 Mercenaries for its awesome gameplay. Mechwarrior4 has even better gameplay and graphics that will spoil you rotten (have a fast computer and a 64 MB RAM video card). If you like mechanized combat simulations, real time strategy, and first person shooters, this is the game for you.

It's been a while since I played a "giant robot" game, so I don't think I would have bought this, but fortunately, I won it, and once I had installed it I played nothing else for several weeks. This game is FUN, pure and simple.
Pros: Great-looking; well-designed missions that are neither too long nor too short; engaging storyline - I actually got emotional about it at points; virtually bug free; great assortment of mechs and weapons to choose from; excellent use of force-feedback (I strongly suggest playing this with a good joystick - I used the Sidewinder 2).
Cons: Not really a major flaw, but I'd was left wanting more after I'd played through all the missions.
In summary, even if you're not into "big robot" games (which I'm not really), I think you'll enjoy this.

To me it seems more time was spent on the storyline/video recording than game development. The actors didn't say anything I really wanted to hear and it just wasn't as satisfying blowing things up as it was in MW3. Even with a good PC (Pent 4 1.4G w/all the trimmings) it gets choppy in battle. I recommend if want to pretend you are a blond hair blue eyed kid and you want to see video's of people "talking", but if you wanna rip a mechs leg off with an Auto Cannon, stick to MW3.
Great Game. Too Short Though.

Over-all a cool game. Graphics are amazing. I bought all the previous versions and had a blast. This one is no exception. There was one drawback. The campaign is too short and easy. Once you salvaged some bigger mechs and used your lancemates it was a cakewalk. Only the last mission was a challenge. The multi-player feature saves it. Upgrade you internet connection because you will have many sleepless nights playing on the net.
Note to all of those trashing the new MechLab: as much as I loved loading up on er large pulse lasers and laying waste to my enemies in previous versions, the new lab brings an actual realism to the game. If it is a missle rack, put missles there. Whats wrong with that? If you can't handle the realism how good are you?

Mech Warrior 4 is a real improvement over Mech Warrior 3, with better special effects, a new Mechlab, and easy handling, especially with the Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick, which I have. Firing different weapon groups is useful for volleys, and firing certain weapons together, eg. a Med. Laser and a Sm. Laser together. The new mechs in it(there are 7,) really add to the game. Now you need new strategies to help you defeat never-before seen mechs.
Unfortunately, it needs a LOT of space on your hard drive. I think that you could load about 3 other games instead of installing it.
If you liked The previous Mech games, you will definitely like this.
Quite a good game

I was excited when I heard that MW4 was going to be released. It met most of my expectations. The graphics are absolutely BEAUTIFUL, with the lighting effects, smoke trails, and definately the Mechs exploding. I found the storyline ok, I found MW3's quite better, but the MW4 didn't suffer from it. I was mad when Microsoft TOTALLY changed the controls on me (why put the Mech controls in the keypad?) but that was easily fixed when I bought a joystick. And the multiplayer has been totally revamped from earlier versions, I don't know why but I find playing MW4 online a lot more fun than MW2 or 3. The only place this game lacks in is the actors, definately. I found the acting very cheesy, while in MW3 the MFB commander had a voice that would FORCE you to pay attention.
But, this game gets 4 stars for the graphics and multiplayer.
Totally Awesome!!!!

If you like the Mech games, and want to get one that has the best graphics, best play and awesome mechs..this is the game for you. I run it on Windows XP and it works just fine. So, just because the requirements stop at Win ME, dont pass this up, but do make sure that you have a good graphics card to enjoy them better. Also make sure that your video and sound card drivers are the MOST up to date.
