Silent Hill 2 (SH2) is a classic. Silent Hill 3 (SH3), I just wasn't sure about. I bought it because I enjoyed Silent Hill 2. But after 40 min saw no reason for what I was doing. There very limited ammo so all you really do is run around trying to avoid unrealistic monsters. If you've played silent hill 2, you've been there and done that SH3 is a replica of SH2 with a little better graphics. Now if you enjoy running down hallways buy it or else to what I did, return it and get Fatal Frame 2 (FF2). If you like SH2 I would suggest getting FF2.

The most satisfaction you'll get out of this game is unwrapping the cellophane and relishing in the thought that you are about to undergo an experience that may change your sanity forever! After that it's pretty much all downhill from there. Here is the short list of reasons.
1) Just like Resident Evil, it's pretty much the same thing over and over again. The winning formula is applied plus 25% more action and weapons. But where Resident Evil actually gets bigger, better, and stronger with each sequel, Silent Hill just goes further and further down the toilet.
2) Monsters are not monsters. They are more like the monsters that get cast for the pilot of a promising new game and then get dumped once the producer says, "okay, I'll shell out some money for this project but you better get us some new monsters."
3) Voice acting is actually more annoying, more terrible, and more pointless than in the original PSX Resident Evil! Can you believe it? Yes, someone actually beat a record I thought Capcom could never lose!
4) The most unforgiveably shallow part of this game is its story. I don't know about the rest of you, but you'd have to be a pervert, or a catholic priest, to think that the idea of a girl giving birth to some unholy deity is a good concept for a video game. Shame on you Father Yamaoko!
But all is not bad because after you beat the game and unlock all the secret weapons you can at least go around and kick butt in Eternal Darkness style! (i.e. cut left arm, check; amputate right arm, chek; cast shield spell, roger; decapitate monster, affirmative).
My best word of advice to all you people who love this game, sit down and evaluate why you think it's so great. If you do, you'll probably find that you have a lot of emotional problems yourself that probably ought to be worked out first before you start glorifying this game. Normal people don't appreciate being misled and robbed of their hard earned $40 dollars.
Toodles.

THIS IS DEFFENETLY THE BEST HORROR GAME FOR A CONSOLE...
I'VE BEEN A RESIDENT EVIL FAN FROM THE BEGINING , AND WHEN THE SH 1 DEMO DISC CAME OUT , I WAS VERY EXCITED , I THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA TOP RESIDENT EVIL , BUT IT DIDN'T , THE GRAPHICS WERE AWFUL , THE CONTROL WAS KINDA CLUMPSY...
IT WAS A GREAT GAME , BUT A DISSAPOINTMENT TO ME , AFTER PLAYING SH 2 , I WAS CONVINCED THAT THE SH SERIES HAD SO MUCH TO OFFER THAN RE , YES , RE BROKE ALL THE PROTOCOLS , AND IT'S STILL THE GODFATHER OF GORE , AND HORROR GAMES...
BUT , DAMN , SH 3 HAS THE MOST REALISTIC GRAPHICS OUT THERE , THE SOUND IS AWESOME ... THE STORYLINE PRETTY GOOD...
BUT THIS IS A HORROR GAME THAT IS ACTUALLY SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU CAN PLAY THIS FOR 20 MINUTES , AND BE SHAKING AN HOUR AFTER YOU STOPPED PLAYING IT...
GREAT GAME... ONE OF THE BEST GAMES YET.
the gameplay is scary

I bought this game not having played any other silent hill, but if they are anything like this game, thank god. This game is horrid. The controls are terrible, the combat is horrible, the main character is weak and embaressing. The story, it was so great that I lost interest in 20 minutes. All in all the only scary thing in this game is the game itself.
Konami didn't try hard

This game was bad, had no new story and the graphics remained the same. Enviornment still remains to be unfinished, lack of charecters and no new weapons. The list could go on but the bottom line is that the game sucks. 4/10.

After Silent Hill 2, I was sure Silent Hill was one of the greatest game franchises ever. Then Silent Hill 3 came and it almost ruined it. Silent Hill 3 uses the same engine as Silent Hill 2, so it's not terrible but the story is total trash. That's pretty amazing since SH2 delieverd the most epic storyline in survival horror history. Silent Hill 3 is bad but it's still got a lot of what makes Silent Hill good. Silent Hill 4: The Room, is another story, that's when konami totally sold out the franchise.
Get disoriented, lost, and, oh yeah, a little bit of story.

The most annoying thing about this game is the fact that most of the time you can't see ahead of you!!!!. I know it's dark most of the time, but it's the camera that gets truly annoying. Most times when you walk into a room the camera goes right on you, so on the screen you see your character standing at a door, wouldn't we be seeing what is in the room??? no, not here, then we have to fuss with running around and getting angles to work so we can see where the heck we are going...blah
anyway, this is more of the same from Silent Hill 2, which is running, running, getting lost, disoriented, ,,finding a key, use it on a door, blah blah blah,,,,not much of a game here...The best parts are the videos/storyline....why dont they have more of those???? The enemies are competely annoying and sometimes, lame. The concept, graphics, story are great, but just they way it is implemented could be better. The main character seems to keep her composure even though she is in this hellish world?
doesn't stand test of time - too linear

I got this game after seeing the new Silent Hill movie which I was quite surprised by. Not a bad horror film. So I was inspired to revisit the game title. I did a bit of research and found Silent Hill 3 was rated the highest by fans so I chose that one. When I started playing it I was pretty disappointed. It is an old game so I have to keep that in mind, but I don't evn think I'd have liked it when it first was released. The story is utterly linear - you can't deviate from the one and only possible path. You can only interact with predetermined items. If there's a small pile of cardboard bloacking your way, you can't just climb over it, it's a dead end. Super frustrating. There are only a few types of monsters and their graphics are terrible. You just end up going in circles. Some cool horror cut scenes but just not a fun game to play. Don't bother!

I really wanted to like "Silent Hill 3", but in the end it was all just a confusing akward mess. It's basically about some blonde on PMS, drugs or BOTH! This girl can barely defend herself from those silly monsters. The game is very annoying and frustrating to say the least. RENT it before you buy!

At the time of this review, Silent Hill 3 has been out for about a month in Europe already. Folks here in the US like me will have to wait a couple of more months. While I haven't actually played the game yet, I have researched it and talked to some people on the other side of the ocean who had, and here are some of the things we can look forward to:
Graphically, the game is on par with the previous installment, if not better, which is great. But story and theme-wise, the game takes a step back to Silent Hill 1, which it more resembles. In fact, the storyline ties directly to Silent Hill 1, not Silent Hill 2. Definitely not as cerebral as Silent Hill 2, more so a demonic cult theme like the first. This can be good or bad, depending on which game you liked better. If you thought Silent Hill 1 was better than 2, then you will probably like 3. If not, 3 will seem like a little disappointing step back. But fans of both should enjoy it nevertheless.
In any case, the gameplay and atmosphere retains the same quality as in previous games, and this should not be a disappointing sequel like Devil May Cry 2. Some people have complained about this game being more linear than its predecessors, with less opportunity to explore. However, some people have embraced the added linearity as it takes away some needless backtracking.
Lengthwise, it is pretty much the same as the previous, which is semi-short. Multiple endings like in previous games will keep you playing more.
Finally, rumor has it that if you save the game on a memory card with a previous Silent Hill 2 game saved on it, you will unlock additional scenes, possibly relating to it.
From what I have heard and read, I can't wait to get my hands on this game. Looks like it is going to be good.
