this is a great game. you have a choice of two different modes to play in: story mode, which is the main game, and Free Ride mode, which is basically GTA3 in the 1930s. this is a good idea, as it allows you to play around in Free Ride mode without messing up what you've done in the main game. you can even save your progress in Free Ride and come back to it at any time.

also, as you progress in the main game, new cars and features are unlocked in Free Ride. and when you've completed the main story game, you can play Free Ride Extreme, which allows you to unlock even more cars and features in Free Ride mode.

all this adds up to many hours of gameplay, and lots of fun.

i may be in the minority here, but i think that driving is one of the best features of this game. the cars are very detailed, and the physics are meticulous. i'd imagine that the sluggishness of some (repeat.. SOME) of the vehicles is probably fairly true to form, as the cars of the 30s weren't quite built like they are today. in any case, the cars and the driving are one of the main things that adds the unique atmosphere that this game has so much of.

finally, regardless of what the amazon editorial reviewer said, there is NO multiplayer of any kind. i read somewhere that it may be added in a future patch, but if MP was a major selling point for you, you may want to reconsider.
on second thought, you should buy it anyway, because this game is sweet.

the game is ok, but gta3 is much better. this game is very linear and the cars really [stink]. the details are not all that great, the weapon choices are limited. all of this is of course in comparison to gta3, which has much much more to offer. they are both fun games, and this one is very interesting, but if you are only going to afford one, get gta3 instead and you won't be sorry.

What the ... is up with people. I haven't found this game buggy, just bloody boring. I wanted a mafia game, instead all I got was a driving game. All you do is constantly drive around town listening to dixieland playing in the background. And ... vintage cars that don't go over 50mph at that! What the ..., it's just nothing but friggin driving. The game starts, you have to DRIVE your future comrades to safety. Then you have to go on about 5 bloody taxi journeys all over the city. When that was all over I thought great, at last, now some real action. No. You have to DRIVE all the way across town just to smash a few car windows in and then DRIVE all the friggin way back. Then a few more ... missions, all of which require DRIVING all the way across town just to get to the mission, and then DRIVING all the way back. Finally I thought I had got to a point in the game where the real game was gonna start and I was gonna get a real mission. But no, what do I get? I have to DRIVE a friggin vintage race car round 5 laps of a race. I give up. I've had enough. This isn't what I bought this game for. What a con job. If i'd wanted a bloody driving game I'd have bought GTA or something like that.

Ive become addicted ever since I got this game. Whoever says this game is awful is full of B.S. It is a bigger world (and) better than GTAIII, better graphics (anyone who says the game is choppy has a computer from the 70's). I got my comp. 3 years ago, I run the game from an external drive on highest settings and it is smooth. The driving is also a bonus. Hey, you dont have to drive even, the subway and trolly are always an option, and you can actually see through the windows while riding (unlike GTA III). Yes, it is a mix between max payne and gta III, but is better than each. GET THIS GAME!!! It is well worth the money!!! also check out partysnaps.8k.com !

I have played the demo of this game and I was PLEASENTLY surprised!!! I bought it off Amazon immediately. Graphics are amazing and the storyline is SOO ... much fun. It is GTA 3 with a mafia twist. I happen to love that era so it works very well for me. This game is worth it!!!
Have fun!!!!

Ok, I love the graphics, sound and cinema feel this game has. You feel if you've been dropped into another Godfather movie as your character is sucked up into a life of crime. As you move from incident to incident with your new "Family", you can't help but start to feel closer to each character. However.....
...you spend about 90% of this game in a car. I've had the game for about 3 weeks and have spent about 90% of my game time driving around the ficticious city of "Lost Heaven". If you love to drive old 1930s cars, this is the game for you interspaced with great third person view graphics when you are out of the drivers seat. But come on, do you really want a mafia game where all you do is drive? I've driven a taxi all over the city, back and forth numerous times to a race track and around with my two good fella friends making protection money pick ups all over the city. It gets old, especially when you have a restricted amount of time to complete a driving mission and you fail. No intermediate game saves here, its back into the drivers seat for you.
If you want great interactive missions, try Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. If you want a driving game set in the 1930s with occasional gunfire, then you'll love this one.

4.5 Stars - Well crafted game - Not for everyone

This is a really beautifully crafted game if you have the PC horse-power to run it (I use a P4 2.53 with Nvidia 4600. Lower powered PC may force you to cut back on sound and visuals.)

Runs on XP and 2000 even though not mentioned in Amazon platform listing.

If you are considering purchasing this for your kids, be aware that violence is similar to a Godfather movie (the originals, not the edited for TV versions :) ). Oh, and your kids will be role-playing the shootings, assasinations, hit and runs, bootlegging, speeding, etc. - not just watching.

The game generally uses third-person view (you see your character from the back) but the camera will automatically change to almost 1st person if the surroundings are cramped. I have to say that the automatic view/camera change is one of the best I have experienced in a game of this type. I don't think I once felt I was "fighting" the camera view as I have in some other games.

If you are looking for a pure shooter then this game is probably not for you since it is likely you will find the driving and storyline cutscenes boring. I personally found the change refreshing and the storyline interesting. The driving is much slower paced than a racing sim (except for maybe the racing level) but I never really got bored of driving around in the excellently rendered scenery. For me, the drives also enhanced the spacial awareness and mood of the story setting.
Tip: Your possible frustration with the driving will be greatly reduced by the use of a joystick. I used one along with the mouse for the shooting.

One thing that surprised me is that there is apparently no way to adjust difficulty. I'm not sure if the game does some kind of automatic difficulty adjusting or not. I can say that my impression was of a typical shooter set to the "normal" difficulty level.

The most difficult parts of the game for me were the racing level (can't imagine doing it with the keyboard) and a few places where I wasn't sure what I needed to do.
Tip: Keep your eye out for the white exclamation point in the red circle at the bottom left of the screen. It lets you know when you can perform an action (right-click) on an object. Using F1 to check your objectives is also helpful.

In general, this game is a must for fans of mafia movies (Godfather, Goodfellas, etc.) and vintage cars (the cars have fictitious make and model but are reportedly based on real cars from the time period). A pleasant change if you are getting a little tired of a traditional shooter and enjoy a racing sim once in a while.
Not going to be your cup of tea if you're looking for an Unreal Tournament clone.

Mafia well deserves my 5 stars.

This game, in a nutshell, is one of the greatest things I have ever seen developed for the PC. Being a huge GTA fan, I even have to admit defeat - Mafia schools GTA big time. Mafia is the ultimate mobster game ever made. The story is very strong indeed. It is basicly a mini-movie rolled into a game format which makes playing it very very fun. The only downside to it is that it needs a big rig to run on. Also, the Freeride options are limited and not that much fun after the 4th hour of play. Hardly anybugs were found while playing this star of a game, and the only thing that I could see which could be improved is having a little more direction during the campaign game.

One thing though, you need some patience to play this game. Don't be surprised if you have to drive your a$$ all over town too and from each mission. Its alot like GTA that way except your always working for the Mafia and the cars are slow as hell. But hey, its the 1930's, what do you expect.

This game grows on you fast, and before you know it, you'll be hooked on the story...

Best Game Ever

Mafia is one of the finest games I have ever played, and that is a rousing reccomendation coming from someone who has been playing games for nearly a decade. Excellent, enthralling story line, never before seen realism, and incredible graphics and detail set this game apart from anything else I have ever played. Take the sheer fun style of Vice City, combine it with the plot of Goodfellas, the playibility of Halo, and the groundbreaking creativity of Metal Gear solid. When I finished this game, and that took and extremely long time due to its incredible depth, I felt like a peice of my life was forever gone.
Simply one of the greatest games ever, I can't wait for it to hit PS2 in the months to come. Whether its driving any one of the dozens of classic 30s cars, firing a tommy gun down an alley for a classic "hit" on a rival gangster, or a political assination from the top of the church tower, the game is enthralling from beginning to end. You will not be dissapointed.
