Red Dead Revolver- How does it compare to GTA?

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 4
Date: May 19, 2004

When I saw Red Dead Revolver, I thought it was Grand Theft Auto in a western setting. Well, to a degree it is, but it's also its own game too. Obviously you will notice that the graphics are in the Grand Theft auto cartoon style... Otherwise it's a new ballgame.

One noticable difference from GTA is the lack of freedom. This game is very focused of action rather then walking around a giant environment. You do get to walk around town a bit and talk to locals, but don't expect to be free roaming and shooting innocents like GTA.
Also, the controls are much more complicated then GTA. The most noticable thing is no auto aim. It takes a little while to get used to moving your character with one control while trying to aim with the other, but don't let that keep you from buying the game. The controls for the most part are tight and once you get used to them, the game will seem easy.

If you love Clint Eastwood Style westerns or you just like bloody violent video games, then this is a essential title to pick up. You get to live all the quintessential and classic moments from western films, such as saving the train from being robbed, massive shoot outs in the ghost town, bar room brawls and more! This is the next best thing to actually being in the oldwest.

lets hope for a sequel! I'm hoping for more expansive terrain, create a gun slinger, and cooperative 2 player game mode.

Western Gaming at it's best.

Red Dead Revolver is, by far, one of the best Western games I've ever played. The game has an easy learning curve also. After an hour or so of play you will have all the controls down, and you'll be hooked or otherwise very interested.

It has one of the best story-lines out of any other games I know. Basically, a Western tale of revenge on a renegade Southern General and his Colonel. You play as Red Harlow whose father was brutally murdered right in front of him by Colonel Darien, again, General Diego's right hand man.

I wouldn't say this game is as bad as the rating makes it. There is no actual dismemberment, as the rating for "Blood and Gore" says, and the use of curse words is kept to a minimum. If you've seen any PG-13 Rated movies, the two could relate.

It's a fun time killing game, if you're bored, with great replay value for people who don't plan on finishing the single player modes. There are tons of characters to choose from in the multiplayer mode, both good and bad. The multiplayer modes are numerous also, including things like Showdown and Dueling modes.

The downfalls of this game are the short Story mode and the overall simpleness of it. There aren't many ways you can get creative with it.

But, the greatest thing about it I believe is: The sheer Hilariousness of it! Me and a friend sat and played it for more than 4 hours at night once, and sat holding our sides, crying, because of laughter. The midget clowns and the character reactions are funny. Especially how it sometimes glitches up. Once during a boss fight with a very fat character, the fat enemy got hung in a stairwell, because he was too big to go through it.

An Overall VERY GOOD game! You should buy this, and if you like this game, you may want to purchase GUN too. GUN copied off of Red Dead Revolver for the most part though. Both games have very short stories too.

If you like a good Western and great replay value, then you will certainy love Red Dead!

Best Of The Best

This is a great game! It's a rare jewel among others. Don't listen to the reviews from PSM, Game Informer, or IGN. They make it sound terrible. I mean it got #1 in EB games best sellers of the week. How could it be terrible? I hope it gets a sequel. One of the best games Rockstar has brought out compared to some of their other ultra violent games. I mean it is rated M but for just the killing and a little language. Like I said it's a great game. It took me the first level through once to get used to the controls. But how many good western games are out there? If you are looking for something new rather the regular old action genre go ahead give this a try, you won't be disapointed if you like a good western and good music (if this game comes out witha soundtrack,I'll be thereto get it. ) .

The Bad, The Ugly & the Good

I admit I was hoping this would be a spaghetti Western version of Grand Theft Auto and, as many here have pointed out, it just isn't. But GTA raised the bar pretty damn high and few games can match Vice City's level of brain damaging fun, gameplay and graphics.

The graphics and the gameplay here are 3-3.5 star level. I'm not crazy about the controls, you're extremely limited as to what you can do and there are massive shifts between stuff that's surprisingly easy to pull off and stuff that takes replay after replay.

Still, "Red, Dead" has more than its share of positives and blows away recent snoozers like "Mafia." Give points to the story mode for not being afraid to be a little wacky (evil circus midgets?), game-checking a horde of Western movie motifs (I particularly liked climbing up the canyon to track down Bullwhip Annie) and offering up a seriously fun multi-player option. Even though I've finished the story mode, it's still fun to have shoot outs with friends at the Old Fort and in the fields and ghost towns. There's also a nice variety of different types of shotguns, rifles, pistols and other weapons. And it is a kick to hop up on a buffalo and race around after evil cowpokes.

I bought it the day it came out. I figured, why waste a rental fee for something I'm pretty sure I'll want to keep; if I hated it I could always sell it on-line. Had I rented it before I bought it, I might not have paid full price for it. But now that I have it, I won't sell it. If you're still looking to buy it, caveat emptor: wait a month or two, pay less for a used copy, you'll enjoy it more.

This game is fun if you like westerns and enjoy a shooting game. I rented it and finished it in a weekend. It does have challanging levels and the quick draws are fun, but it seems to lack what the Grand Theft auto's had. It is very linear in the story line. Rent it before making the purchase.

Quite Possibly The Best PS2 Game I Have Played

This was the first game I ever bought new, and paid full price for. I kicked myself about it all the way home for giving in, but once I played it that evening I realize how worth it it was. Not since GTA3 have I enjoyed trecking through a game so much, some levels are very hard, and there is quite a level of strategy involved in beating them. Often you have to time when you are going to pick up health bars, or who you are going to kill first to get through a level. I suggest this to all GTA, Western or shooter fans who want great graphics, good story, and fast play!

A Great Game

Red Dead Revolver is an amazing tour de force, combining all of the panache, excitement, and aesthetic of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, with an abundance of challenges needed to quell any hardcore gamer's thirst for action.
While many games lapse into repetitiveness, Red Dead Revolver only increases in intensity as you progress through its many levels, facing a coterie of staunch villains like, Pig Josh, Mr. Black, Grizzly, and General Diego to name a few -- all of whom are truly tough to beat.
The game is loaded with a variety of fantastic levels, characters, and weapons, none of which are as awesomely exciting as the Dead Eye feature -- allowing you to slow gameplay to a crawl, as you lock your foes in your sights as they scramble helplessly for the draw. Use this feature sparingly however, as there are a limited number of times you can employ this jaw dropping device.
The lavishness of the backgrounds are stunning in their stark realism; Burnt out saloons, abandoned Ghost Towns, and red-rock canyons are just some of the arenas you will battle in, not to mention aboard moving Locomotives, atop horseback, and in the Prairies.
The designers of this game have stopped at nothing in their creation of this truly stylized version of the Old West.
Awesome, riveting, addictive. Red Dead Revolver is the game to beat.

Spagetti Western+Video Game=Super FUN!

I'm a huge fan of the westerns. Mostly Clint Eastwood Westerns. Not so much a fan of "The Duke." You know, the Sergeio Leone ones with the real gritty look.
I saw an ad for this game and was instantly intrigued by it. Wow, a great shoot-em-up western has finally made it the gaming world. I read some mixed reviews about it, some of which said that the game was not worth it. Being that I'm such a huge western fan, I decided to buy it and review it myself.
It looks amazing!!! The screen shots look just like some old Clint Eastwood western. Real Gritty!!! The game play is very arcade style which is fast and fun. Controlling the camera and your character can get a bit frustrating but whatever! It's real run. Quick Draw and Dead Eye add a lot to its playability. The only thing that I really don't like about the game so far is that there isn't so much of a range in the speeds in the characters movement. Its real similar to controlling whatshisface from GTA Vice City. To much running. The analog does not easily allow you to walk to stride to brisk walk to run to sprint. All in all, I'm feeling this game a lot and I haven't even finished playing it. Either way, I'm going down in a blaze of glory

Almost Perfect... Best Western Game Yet!

This game offers the complete gunslinger experience with shootouts, quickdraws, saloon fights, horseback(& bullback) riding, cardplaying, etc. The character & level design are rich and complete. This game is just about fun! There are a few glitches & imperfections, but all in all I give it a solid 8.5 out of 10! I would not recommend this game to anyone under the age of 25, for chances are they would not appreciate the influences certain classic films have had on the creation of this game.
