Hungry for some more Snake? After giving us The Twin Snakes, a re-imagination of the first MGS game for Nintendo's GameCube, Konami is back to deliver the authentic follow-up, Snake Eater. After the controversial outcome that resulted from Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear fans won't have to worry about the absence of Snake or another convoluted storyline here. Snake Eater truly defines what tactical espionage action is all about, and being one of the best games available for the PS2.
As a prequel to the series, Snake Eater starts off rather sluggish, but later picks up the pace, drawing in gamers to 1960s USSR and taking on a similar presentation to James Bond films. Unlike Sons of Liberty, the plotlines of Snake Eater are much easier to follow while the characters remain memorable without too much backstory to slow the game down. The gameplay is by far the most sophisticated in any Metal Gear game yet, requiring the player to correctly utilize camouflage combinations, curing and healing specific parts of the body, and using the much talked-about close quarters hand-to-hand combat.
Graphics-wise, Snake Eater pushes the PS2's visual capabilities to the limits. Moving blades of grass and foliage, signs of life in the environment, and amazing water and fire effects grace this great-looking title. Wonderfully directed cinemas tell the story flawlessly and even feature interactive cutscenes. Although the game does suffer from bouts of slowdown and hitches in framerate, it's still the most detailed Metal Gear game to date. The voice acting and soundtrack are both top notch, while the traditional sound effects from past MGS games can still be heard.
The awkward pacing of the game may turn off some players, however. And while this is a true "sequel" in a sense to the series, others may find it difficult to understand why the setting of the game was chosen. Snake Eater is a fantastic game on its own, but those following the MGS story may feel strange as to why they're even playing it during this timeframe in the first place. These issues aside, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater still makes up for what MGS2 lacked. Even though the game can be beaten within a short period of time, the experience it gives to the player is really unlike any other, which is reason enough for anybody to give this one a try.
Great - provided you're a MGS fan

I'm lucky enough to have a USA PS2, so I've been playing this game now rather than waiting until next March. I think the review from the last guy (who hated this game) highlights a very important point; you really have to know and appreciate the Metal Gear Solid series to enjoy 'Snake Eater'. Firstly, one of the great attractions of this game for fans is that it answers a lot of questions about the origins and history behind the MGS characters. Secondly, MGS games are a very specific type, not really comparable to other stealth games in my opinion; more of an 'action adventure with stealth elements'. If you just want a challenging, purely stealthy experience, this will probably not satisfy you. MGS games have certain standards - a convoluted plot with plenty of twists, melodramatic dialogue full of cod-philosophy, and incredibly long cutscenes. They are all part of the MGS experience, and as a fan I wouldn't want it any other way, but I can understand why some people find them offputting. However, provided you already like MGS, you should love MGS 3.
One final word; perhaps I am getting soft, but there are some torture scenes in here that really turned my stomach, moreso than Silent Hill, Manhunt, etc. You have been warned!
The most fun I've had with a snake

I purchased this title about 2 days ago and I finally got some time to sit down and play a good gaming session today and all I can say is "Wow". I do agree with previous posters that for this installment when they say that they should've switched over to a third person perspective, but you also need to realize that one of the key elements of all of the Solid series was to look before you leap. That is stressed even more so in this environment because you literally can't see what's ahead of you. I've found that even after sitting for a few minutes and tracing a certain sentinal's route I'll make minor progress and then have to watch for another sentinel and still remember about the previous one so as not to get caught. It's all about situational awareness. It is a bit tougher, though, to be aware of everything in an open jungle environment with 60's era sonar and motion sensor technology than it is in smaller enclosed areas with GPS, but that's what it takes to be a covert operative. People that complain about the long and convulated story... were you there for the previous two MG's? All the new features are incredible. I'm not going to spoil anything and leave you to find out for yourself or speculate based on what you've read (anyone that's read anything about MGS 3 could allready infer that this Snake isn't present day Snake and will later go on to become Big Boss and the "father" of the Les Enfents Terribles project), but I will tell you that you get into a sniper battle that surpasses any and all sniper battles I've ever been in. A battle that involves you actually taking the time and patience to look for your green draped target in a green colored jungle. The reason it takes so long is primarily that you don't want to make yourself a target (like a real sniper should) but also because he's usually pretty far away. You'll actually have to look for sniper slip-ups like glare on a scope... Pretty darn cool... But yeah, the detail is astounding and I would definitely recommend this game for those that prefer "single" over "full auto".
A big improvement on MGS2 but why does the UK have to wait?

I'll get straight to the point, MGS2 had too much talk, an overly complicated plot with too many twists and perhaps most importantly no real freedom to sneak past enemies in many different ways. MGS3 has a simpler plot that has its twists and keeps you guessing but won't leave you confused. This game is a lot more focused on the gameplay itself and is a lot more tense than MGS2.
A lot of people have critised the camera angle. I agree with some of the reviews below and the angle(s) the game gives you can make it very frustrating when trying to remain undetected. unless you use first person view you cannot see very far ahead of you. The other metal gear games are the same but there was soliton radar which made it easy to locate the enemy. MGS3 is like playing MGS2 on extreme level with no radar, it requires a lot more caution. The thing to remember though is that Metal Gear games are almost interactive movies and as such have camera angles that are more beautiful than functional. This is all part of the fun! just look before you make a move and you'll be fine.
The Boss battles are superb, the bosses themselves are given a brief background description but basically they pop up at stages of the game as usual and it kicks off. Each one requires a different strategy according to the environment your in to beat them. The battle with the sorrow is genuinely dark and disturbing (konami's experience with silent hill no doubt influenced this battle)the sniper battle with the End is superb and will take you the best part of an hour to get the better of him. The Battle with Volgin and Shagohod is the most impressive thing i have seen on any video game ever.
The graphics are much slicker than MGS2 and more detailed, the music is equally as good. Music is very sixties style mission impossible/James Bond. Very cool. The camoflage system is very good and adds to the the rambo style atmosphere. The healing system is a bit fiddly during Boss battles especially but it doesn't detract from the gameplay, it adds to the realism. Some great new weapons like the shotgun and the new abilities,CQC,interrogation and the human shield are superb.
As a gaming experience i don't think you will find a more polished and professionally executed game on any system. I have almost completed it but will be going through it again because of its sheer brilliance. Best game on PS2 no question.

I rented this game for a weekend and, sadly, playing it was all I did. This game is like a movie or a suspenseful series, you can't stop playing/watching it because you want to find out what happens next. The game is filled with long, long cut-scenes, but once you're into the story, you'll be looking forward to them. The game takess less than 20 hours to complete, but tons of extras, such as finding all of your camouflage and facepaints.
This game featured camouflage and stealth rules and well balanced weapons.
If you get this game, be ready to use up 20 hours of your life. After I played this game, it'll be hard to find a game to replace this one because of its graphics, sound, awesome movie style, and gameplay. You've been warned...
It's back and better than ever

Tis true my friends, Metal Gear has returned with it's latest installment that will win all those fans back that were disgusted with MGS 2 for taking Snake out. MGS 3 is miles ahead of what the other games were, and you really need to play it to fully appreciate the features and depth the game has. And yes, for those of you who haven't played the game yet, Snake is the only character you play as. No Raiden or anything (even though they do play a little joke on you at the beginning of the game having Snake wear a mask of Raiden). And Snake is just as cool as ever. Good thing that's been fixed.
Ok now first I'm going to tell you, I liked Metal Gear Solid 2. The story, the characters, everything. I thought it was a good game. However MGS no doubt beats it in every aspect. If you've played MGS from it's first appearance back on PS1, you will definitely appreciate everything this game has to offer. The graphics are gorgous, just like they have been in every other game. Environments look rich and detailed, and characters look and act just about as human as you can get for a video game. The controls are smooth, and only expand upon the features that have naturally been added over the years. The most notable addition would be the stanima, which you have to keep high for Snake to be able to continue. It's kind of like energy, and the way you replenish it is by eating. Since the game takes place primarily in the jungle, there are plenty of animals to kill and plants to eat, and you will quickly learn what tastes good and what doesn't. Also the addition of being able to cure your injuries is quite clever, and is throughly explained to you when you first discover how. Also this time the story is significantly better than the last. The game takes place in the 1960's when relations between the U.S and Russia were very strained. The Snake that appears in this game though is not the Snake that is in other games. Although he looks just the same, Snake is an agent who works for the American government. His real name is Jack, and he has nothing to do with Solidous, Liquid and such. He was trained by one of the other main characters in the game, The Boss. The story sets up that Snake is being sent to Russia to rescue a scientist named Sokolov, who has been kidnapped and forced to work on the newest Metal Gear/Atomic weapon Shagohod. Fairly early in the game Snake rescues Sokolov and you find out that The Boss has betrayed Snake and joined a group of Russian militants trying to otherthrow the Russian government. Like I normally do, I do not want to spoil the story for those who have not played it, but much of the game has to deal with rescuing Sokolov so he cannot complete Shagohod. I thought the story was quite interesting considering it takes places way before the other games, and took history which I thought was quite boring and made it very good.
The name Snake Eater comes from the name code name of Snake's mission.
If you liked any other MGS games, you will like MGS 3 : Snake Eater. The story is good, the graphics are beautiful, the characters are interesting, the controls are smooth, and the game is just plain fun. For the twenty hours or so it occupies your life, you will love it. There's plenty of hidden features and extras in here too, to keep you busy even after you've beaten the game. So go to your nearest game store, or add this to your shopping cart, because this is one PS2 game that you don't want to be without.

Man, my head is still spinning from the storyline. This game is an amazing cinematic experience. The camera angles, as always in Metal Gear games, are awful, but that alone cannot keep me from rating this game as high as possible. I didn't think it got any better than Metal Gear Solid Sons of Liberty... until now. I only hope that Mr.Kojima has it in him to make a 4th installment.
Jaw-droppingly Good!

This is one of my favorite games of all time. I have been a metal gear solid fan since the first 'solid' game on the ps1, even when I was just watching someone play it! This game takes all the good parts of the past games, adds new stuff, and gets rid of all the annoying parts. First, the story isn't nearly as convoluted as in the past. No warring covert factions that might be the same one or whatever. However, you still need to pay attention, as there are a few surprising twists near the end,but no real head-scratchers for anyone whose IQ is higher than that of 2-ply toilet paper. The cutscenes are still very long, but ridiculously well-directed and genuinely fun to watch. Also, there are times (in the cutscenes) the game will tell you to push R1, and if you're fast enough, you can see something hidden, surprising, or just plain fun to look at. (I'll say this: it involves a woman and a surprise look at something fun)
Also, the gameplay has been revamped. You must decide what camo pattern will hide you the best, hunt your food, and you can even blow up enemy storehouses to weaken their weapons, or make them less aggressive from hunger. There is a boss fight can easily take over an hour. (The End is his name. Small hint: Keep moving. Don't stay in one spot for too long.) Close-quarters combat with the knife is just amazing and really tests your controller-wielding skills. The music, especially the main theme, is just amazing, and will blow you away. Some people have been complaining that, at at least 24 hours, the game is too long, but they don't know what they're talking about. REAL gamers WANT their games to be long. Spendng $50 on a game that you can beat in 2 days is just ridiculous, especially for us teenagers that don't have jobs and need to wait a while to get ahold of that money. Here's the bottom line: (took long enough to get to the end, right?) This is one of the best games I have ever played. You don't just play it. You EXPERIENCE it. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. Now. What are you doing? Go buy it, right this second! Sorry this review was so long. (Hint: Once you get a cardboard box, get in it and call your equipment guy on your radio. (the black guy whose name I can't remember.) You'll hear a funny conversation that fans of the Metal Gear Solid series will definitely understand.)

This Japenese game which hit the scene as one of the early must have playstation has come along way through the ages. Purchasing metal gear solid as my first playstaion game was a wise move though with my parents buyin me more i jus wanted metal gear solid to be completed.
Now into 2005 when i purchased this game with tight graphics a well kept storyline and some real characters along the journey kept me like i was a child wanting more. However as i am 13 and could hold a control properly unlike my early age i found this game slightly easy. Completed this game in a week was sad for me and i wished i hadn't played it non stop.
Now onto the game. With its jungle atmosphere it brought a whole knew element into the metal gear solid series. Having to eat to survive and having to camoflauge to survive being shot it brought a different feel to the game. The story which some of my mates found CONFUZZLING!! was in fact quite simple. You were snake and u had to avoid Dying and do whatever you were told over the walkie talkie. The boss had failed her task and was forced to give her life for her country. However the real mind blower of the storyline was that of EVA and what everyone is waiting to see is if this storyline will be continued throughout the next game and u surely hope so. Another blower was knowing that ocelot would not die because of his apperence in metal gear solid 2.
All in all this was a very anticapeted game and it lived up to the standards the two before have set and snake still is without a doubt the coolest non-superhero ever!!
Kyle.

A good game, but not a great game. It has a lot of replayability, but I played it through once and won't be playing it through again. It's fun in spots, but then there are so many other parts that just aren't that much fun. You've got to have patience to play this and that doesn't seem good trait for a game - shouldn't it just be plain fun?? Good story, unlike Metal Gear Solid 2, and overall better than MGS2, so if you like MGS2 you'll like MGS3. All the annoyances are still there though (like the long boring radio conversations) and now more, like needing to find and "eat" food, change camo, and the ever restrictive camera which can get very frustrating!
