Um when you clone a person they still start out as a child. So if snake was cloned in 1966, he wouldn't be an adult in this game, but rather an infant. As for the missing eye a couple people have mentioned, I believe it will quite likely happen during the game (there will probly be some cut-scene of Big Boss in a fight (...)).

RENT FIRST (if at all)

This game is half ridiculously unbelievable movies and half action. The close quarters combat is ok, but gets repetitive. The weapons and animals are cool, but not quite as randomly interactive as I'd hoped. My biggest problem with this game is the CAMERA ANGLE. It is directly overhead, and forces you to run into opposing fire to find enemies. Switching to the first person view locks you in place so you can only aim your weapon, not move around. Meanwhile, you're getting peppered by enemy fire. Control of 'Snake' is ok, but complicated, and more often than not you're kneeling when you're trying to stand up, or crawling backwards when you're trying to crawl forwards.

Look, I don't know who all these kids are saying this is the greatest game ever, but, for the more mature game players out there (ie. not spending mommy and daddy's money) this game has some unignorable problems. The dialogue is obviously choreographed by the Japanese, as it is awkward and downright lame. I've already discussed the camera angles - unbelievably bad. And finally, the movies and interaction with the people on base are way to long and serve very little purpose. This game is ok, but not even close to worth the $50.

Advice to Konami - re release a second version of this with a behind the person camera angle and you may have something, until then - expect more poor reviews.

So much potential, but ruined by an awful camera system

As I write this, I'm about 90% of the way through this game. You play as Snake, a commando who must navigate his way through enemy territory to thwart the communist plans to develop a new ICBM launcher.

The first bad thing you'll notice as you play this is the cut scenes. During the first three hours of the game, you'll only play for about 1/2 hour. The other two and a half hours you'll be sitting there watching it. The cut-scenes unfortunately are pretty awful. Snake talks in a monotone throughout the whole thing, making it almost comical in it's badness. So much of the stuff is just incredibly boring to sit through. It would be really boring as a movie, it's even more boring when you were expecting a game you could actually play instead of sitting and watching. By the halfway point of the game, the cut-scenes decrease in volume and actually become pretty good, but by then it's just too late. You're so sick of watching the game that even good cut-scenes can't save it.

The other gigantic problem is the camera system. You get a third person view which only extends for a short distance around your character. Enemies will almost always attack from beyond that distance, so you'll have bullets flying at you and you can't see where they're coming from. So you switch to first person view - the problem being that you can't move while in this view - you can only stand still and turn. If you've got someone shooting at you, it means that all the other bad guys in the area have been alerted so there will immediately be four or five guys after you. Trying to fight five guys with the awful camera system is an exercise in frustration. You stand in place, aiming your gun. Just as you get one guy in your sights, another guy (who has run right up to you while you were aiming your gun, but you couldn't see him) will knock you down. You get up and try to aim again, and just as you've got the enemy in your sights, you get knocked down again. This is the routine throughout the entire game.

Overall, this game is completely ruined by the awful camera system and the ludicrous amounts of really bad cut-scenes at the beginning. I hear that Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is the same game except with an improved camera system and online play - I would definitely urge people to give that one a try instead. It speaks volumes that the manufacturer would go through all the trouble and expense to release the identical game with a new camera system. They wouldn't do that if the original camera system didn't suck so incredibly bad. I could almost sit through the cut-scenes if there were some good game play to look forward to, but this game leaves you with nothing but frustration.

Almost Un-Playable

My Question to Konami would be,
How could you possibly release a game with such a horrible camera? It has got to be the worst camera & camera angles I have ever witnessed in any game.
Konami should take some tips from Splinter Cell & copy their camera perspective.......it's obvious Metal Gear solid has lost the "Stealth King" title which is now firmly in the hands of the "Splinter Cell" series.

On a positive note, the story is more interesting, bigger, and more confusing than ever.
Now back to the negatives....
The radio messages are toooooo looooong!!
The gameplay is no where near as good as it was in the original back on playstation.

But really, the main reason why I gave this game 2 stars is mainly because of that friggin camera!! That horrible, pitiful excuse for a camera which prevents you from seeing enemies & switches to the most ackward of angles.
And also, you'll be spending at least a good 4 hours getting used to the ackward controls & overly-complicated menu.
Konami, how about making a game that is simple to control, instead of making a chore out of something that is suppose to be fun?

Final Words:
Save your money & wait for the new Splinter Cell!

is this a joke?

Realism and Stealth/Action on a Whole New Level

Metal Gear Solid 3 doesn't just jumpstart the stealth/action genre, it reinvents it. With every little detail from different camouflages, to sutchering wounds, to hunting food to eat, this game takes video games to a whole new level of realism.

First, if you enjoyed either of the previous Metal Gear Solid games, you will love Snake Eater. It explains a LOT about the convoluted plot from part 2: Sons of Liberty. To add to the great plot, b/c the game takes place 30 years before the original Metal Gear Solid, you are able to see the origins of various characters, most notably Revolver Ocelot.

The stealth and action aspects are back, however, unlike in MGS2, the action is evenly balanced with the stealth. In MGS2, a single mistake with the stealth aspect of the game would lead to infinite guards assaulting you until you died and escape was either extremely difficult or impossible. With MGS3: Snake Eater, stealth is still important, but if you make a mistake, the numerous assault rifles, machine guns, pistols, and shotguns can get you out of most bad situations. Not to mention that the infinite reinforcements of MGS2 have been eliminated. In MGS3, if worse comes to worst, and you have to fight to the bitter end, there ARE a limited amount of guards. To top it off, you can (though are not forced to) blow up a supply depot in the jungle which eliminates the enemies' ammo supply so that all soldiers have less bullets.

As for the realism, MGS3 takes it to a whole new level. A percentile number in the upper-right corner of the screen shows how well hidden your charcter is. At 100% you are completely invisible. The number increases if you are crouching, and increases further if you lie prone. To top it off, the dozens of cammo uniforms and face-paints in the game will increase or decrease the number based on the evironment your charcter is in (IE: Leaf cammo works well in underbrush, but stands out drastically in a brick building). When wounded, Snake must use various medical tools to heal himself. He sutchers bullet wounds, pulls out darts, mends broken bones, heals burns, and burns off leeches. To add to all this, the entire game is a living breathing jungle, with animals and plants that range from spiders to rats to snakes to alligators to bees and all can be interacted with, eaten to restore stamina OR, in the case of poisonous snakes, THROWN AT ENEMIES AS WEAPONS!

There is nothing to say about this game that isn't positive. David Hayter is back voicing Snake, and all the voice-overs are excellent. The graphics are the best I've ever seen on PS2 and are comparable to most X-Box games, even better than some. This is the PERFECT stealth/action title, and one of the greatest video games of all time.

Fun, but less gameplay than MGS2...

If you played MGS2, you probably remember the cinematics popping up every few minutes. While this was a bit annoying, the actual game was fun to play. MGS3 doesn't fix this at all. Hideo Kojima should of learned from MGS2, but he didn't.

Basically, you are in the jungle. Unlike previous Metal Gears, you don't hide behind crates. Instead, you camo yourself with the environment. This is easy to do and doesn't take long at all. Throughout the game you pick up more camos, and there are secret ones. There isn't any radar, but this is a good thing. You are now forced to use your motion detector and heartbeat sensor. You also have to look in first person constantly because the camera is practically always above you, and it is a little too close. Another stealth tactic you will learn to love is CQC. Walk up to an enemy and hold the "O" button. Snake will grab the person. At first this is strange because you must keep holding "O" or else the guy will push you and run away. If you hold "O" too hard you will cut his neck and kill him. Once you master holding, CQC is a blessing. You can interrogate enemies, flip them, use them as shields, snap their necks, and trip them. You can also throw your enemies to the ground then make them freeze.

If you don't like stealth, this is a good action game. There are shotguns, heavy machine guns, revolvers, and even a combat knife.

The story is not as far-fetched as MGS2. MGS2 had a crazy story, but at least you could enjoy it. It was so stupid that you kind of found it amusing. MGS3 has a weak story that has been done too many times before. The only redeeming quality of this game is Snake and Revolver. You meet Revolver at the start of the game, and he remains interesting throughout it.

The last thing to talk about is food. There are so many different foods. I've read guides online describing hidden animals and such. Snake responds to food differently, and he can call Para-Medic to teach him about anything.

Although it has a lot of cinematics and uninspired bosses, this game is good. Somehow, it manages to keep me playing. The game has some touching moments and some cool ones. It also provides in the most interesting sniper fight you will ever see in a video game. If you played the originals, pick this one up.

Simply amazing...

Metal Gear Solid 3 is an incredible masterpiece. From its stealth action, camoflauge and food system to its amazingly crafted boss battles, Snake Eater is amazing. I'd have to say that the best part is the story. The final boss battle is incredible, and the ending is simply heartbreaking. Wait till you find out the truth. It's devestating, and it makes complete sense. MGS3's ending clicks with all the other game endings. It's as if Kojima had planned to make this game 20 years ago. It all ends up making sense. The game ranges around 20 hours and don't worry because there is no shortage of action with a good amount of interesting cutscenes to gawk at. If only for that dang camera that makes it so hard! Also, I miss the radar from the previous games. Still, it makes sense with the new jungle settings. No other game offers this level of gameplay. Splinter Cell can't give you any of this, not the gameplay, story, characters, or anything like that. This is a memorable adventure that will leave you exhilirated.

Not up to the hype

Thank god I rented this game first. I'd be committing suicide right now if I'd actually thrown away fifty-buck on this trash. This was suppose to be the game of the year but it's terrible. I've seen better game for playstation 1. The camera angles (what camera angle?) are offal. You can't even tell where the enemy is half the time. But that doesn't really matter you can run around for hours being shot up and not die, how realistic is that?
The dialogue is so cheesy it makes you want to vomit. The conversations between snake and the other characters are redundant and go on forever. The graphics are okay; not great but good. I can't imagine why people compare this game to splinter cell. You might as well compare Mario brothers 1 to splinter cell while you're at it. They couldn't be more different. Don't buy this game, take your money and buy a real stealth game like 'Thief, deadly shadows' or 'Splinter cell, Pandora Tomorrow' instead.
