Not fun

Learn by dying/failing, and when you fail you go all the way back to the beginning. That's a rather bad game design philosophy.

Look before you leap. Please, for your own benefit.

OK, First off, this game is WAAAYYY over hyped. I have played much more fun Atari games than this one. Granted, Maximo has great graphics, and is the sequel to the beloved Ghosts and Goblins, (or was it Ghouls and Ghosts), anyway those are the ONLY things going for it.

The first thing you will think when you first pop in Maximo is "Wow, this game is beautiful." and it will spiral down from there.

First problem, the Camera: In a platform game, the one of the most dire things to have successfully tweaked is the camera. It should be your best friend and help/guide/do-what-I-want-you-to-do type thing, but in Maximo, the camera is your worst enemy. You will find yourself straight from the beginning in situtations where you must jump across lava and the camera seems to be of no help AT ALL, as Maximo can hardly jump an inche anyway, it even seems to be against you, making the game HARDER than it already is...

Second problem, the Difficulty: The enemies in Maximo are some of the most cheapest enemies I have ever fought. They tend to always be out of range of Maximo's midget sword and gang up on you when you are in no postion to fight. And there is a bird that steals your money that you DESPERATELY need ALL THE TIME, and the bird sometimes seems to come out of nowhere and sometimes from behind, and Maximo's midget sword ends up being no use as he, again, can't hardly jump and sword cannot reach the bird flying away. This game definitely needs a difficulty setting, because, obviously it doesn't... (but wait, theres more)

Third problem, in General: Another problem in Maximo is that in order to save, you need 100 coins, which is a daunting task granted that you have the ... bird I discussed earlier stealing your money all the time. Plus, you need the money to buy yourself armor which could be an arm and a leg at times because you will find yourself in a situation that you will need armor, but you just beat a level that was extremly difficult and need to really save, leaving you very frustrated. This problem seems to come up alot after boss fights because you have to choose one or the other. The boss may left you weak, but you want to save, or you have enough energy but will you make it through the next stage alive. You also need special coins called death coins to continue after game overs. Now this wouldn't be a problem, but you find death coins rarely or too far and between. On top of that, if you after you use a couple of continues, the Grim Reaper will begin to charge 2 death coins instead of 1.

There are more problems in here but I would probably go over the 1000 word limit. Take it from one of the most hardcore gamers, Maximo is [bad]. It started off as a great idea and showed lots of promise but was poorly executed and missed by a long shot, a very long shot. The difficulty could have been better as it should be challenging, not unfair as this game will appeal to younger gamers who wont get past the first level. The camera is a gigantic problem and disappointment and Maximo should be better equipped and agile.

If your looking for a good platformer, Jak and Daxter is an excellent choice and wont disappoint.

But still, Maximo is still worth a rental, and a purchase if it was only [a few dollars] but dont say I didn't warn you.

...I am usually a huge fan of any rpg...(Legend of Zelda, Final Fanasy, etc) But this was beyond ridiculus. I [was beaten] ont like the 3rd level up, I only managed to get to the first boss fight one time, and got beat...there.
This was one hard game. Im all about a fun game, but I can't stand games that are so hard, it ruins any fun you might have had with them. That was the main problem, you couldn't change the diffaculty settings, and if you didnt have a magical sword, (which once you got it, didn't last long) you just about can't beat some of the enemies...To sum up : This game [is bad]

WORST game I've come across yet

Usually I read a few reviews before buying a new game, but this was on sale, and the graphics looked good on the box - so I bought it. Since I've played over 50 games and liked pretty much all of them, I didn't think twice about risking buying something without reading reviews.

Boy was I wrong.

First of all - everyone who complained about the saving feature on this game was right. There is nothing more frustrating than spending a couple of hours playing something only to lose everything you've done. Not only is the save feature ridiculously hard to get to, but you also have to pay for it. Since there's no POV in this game, you will inevitably be jumping headfirst into many lava pits along the way, uselessly losing lives.

Another frustrating aspect of this game is that your armor can only take a limited number of hits before you end up running around in boxer shorts (at which point you are as good as dead). Although yes, you can TRY to not get hit, because you can't control the POV, monsters at times sneak up on you that you have no way of seeing. There are also these annoying ghost monsters that are really tough to hit and pretty much destroy your armor.

It's too bad that the makers of this game didn't put more thought into the saving because in terms of actual playability (aside from not controlling the view) it is actually pretty fun. The graphics are good and it has the potential to be addicting.

Too bad I got so frustrated and sold it back for $3 after only trying for 3 nights to play it.

Bottom Line:

Pros -
Good graphics
Easy to learn new weapons techniques
Actual gameplay is addictive

Cons -
Almost impossible to save
Costs $ to save, get armor and life potions (and you don't get that much $)
No POV and too many jumping sequences
Armor doesn't take many hits
Weapon upgrades don't last long

No, no, not worth NOTHING!

"Hey, look Mom, that game overthere looks COOL!" a kid said to
his mother at Blockbuster.
Many nights later. "DARN THIS GAME, MOM... I hate this game, I
HATE IT!"

This is what America should feel like, Maximo should be the wo-
rst GAME of the year 2002, THEY PUT IT A GREATEST HITS LABEL! OH
NO! They were right to put all the Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter,
and Ratchet and Clank on a Greatest Hits label but were wrong to put this as a Greatest Hits, When there was many other better
ones that were ignored such as Escape from Monkey Island, Pirat-
es: Legend of The Black Kat, and Dog's Life. They were wrong to
put this junk as a Greatest Hits game.

The graphics: Horrible, Hell is not like this!

The Sound: BAAD! Capcom, you loonies, your game, this despicable
Maximo [...] is bad!

Pros:
SORRY, NONE!

Cons:
Bad Graphics
Bad sound
Assy saving program
EVERYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF IS BAD ABOUT THIS GAME!

Not worth it, and oh my gosh, look at how much time you've wast-
ed on this

Very difficult

This game is absolutely terrible. I tried it out at the store first then decided to buy it. What a mistake. This game is so dark, it's hard to see where you're going. It's actually a really difficult game and there are very few spots in the game that allow you to save. I don't recommend this game to anyone.

it sucks!!!!!!

I recently purchased a PS2 and this was the first game I got. After reading great reviews I expected it to be a blast, but it wasn't.
This was fun for a while, but it started to get boring. It was the same thing every level and not much variation. Maybe it was too hyped up for me.
I should have got Ico.

What a bad bad game

I picked up this game assuming that it would provide at least a littile bit of fun for me. What I found instead was frustration and regret for wasting $... on it. I graphics are pretty good, but that is about the only place Mazimo shines. The dificulty level is so extreamly frustrating that even doing something as simple as saving the game will have you pulling your eyebrows out. The gameplay is plain and simple, not fun. I played it for hours hoping I would start to enjoy it. It never happened though. Hopefully I can still return it. So if you enjoy wasting money and you hate yourself, this is the game for you!
