If you want a realistic train operation experience, MSTS is for you. The graphics are awesome. There are plenty of play options and scenarios to keep the rail-fan busy for hours. I have been an Amtrak passenger and the scenery is incredibly realistic. My Dad, a retired railroad towerman, was very impressed with the railroad operation aspects. He found the signals, signs, details, sounds, etc., quite accurate. I congratulate the team that developed this sim, they did their research well. You can choose the simplified control option if you don't want to bother with the minutiae of locomotive operation. Also there are lots of help features and very nice tutorials.
If you want a game for your toddler or are looking for intense action, skip this simulation; the intent is REALISM.

Lets all get this strait,MSTS isn't in your face like alot've games out there. Personnally, I'm a Delta Force2 and Rogue Spear Junkie. But I love Msts. But, I'm also a train enthusiast. The game landscapes are well designed and immersive, as well as the varied routes you can take. For example, you can pilot a Flying Scottsman through Britain, or push a High Speed Amtrak Acela HHP-8 electric locamotive through the busy(and often times challenging) Northeast Corridor. To put it plainly,if your looking for some fast-paced shooter, go buy rogue spear or counter strike(both 5-star games). But train enthusiasts and simulator junkies will appreciate this game and will keep playing it for awhile.
WOW!

Train Simulator (Jewel Case)
This software is both a serious train and railroad simulator and a
fun-to-play scenerio-based game, depending on how you choose to use it.
It is very old now, but is currently still the best that is available
due to it's modability and versitility, and the wealth of third-party
ad-ons, both payware and freeware, available for it.
I have rated it 4 stars even though the graphics are quite ugly by todays
standards, and it could definately use a serious update. The
reason I have rated it so highly is that it is so customizable, and you
can easily make a whole new and MUCH improved product out of it by
adding content readily available from many sources. You can even
create your own content, including new train and scenic object models,
new play or sim scenerios, and even new routes or "worlds". So much
beautiful freeware is available for it that you need never spend another
cent on it even while upgrading it tremendously. But I highly recomend
that you take a good look at some of the wonderful and stunning pay-ware
content available at very reasonable prices from a number of sources.
One thing, if you have an old version, you MUST download the upgrade
from Microsoft, or you won't have nearly as pleasant of an experience.
As far as bang for the buck goes, this piece of software is nearly
impossible to beat, especially if you are a rail fan and/or like to
play with or model trains and railroads.
Just buy it, for pete's sake. If you are even interested enough to
be looking, then it will be well worth the paltry $10.00 they are now
asking for it.

I really enjoy this game, but my computer doesn't. I have Windows Vista and for some reason this program gives my system the heebie-jeebies. It does not like to load. When it does the program hesitates to follow commands. Microsoft is putting out a new Train Simulator. I trust I'll have better luck with that one.
Everything my son hoped it would be!
