Won't run on ATI Rage Mobility Video Card

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 12 / 25

Microsoft Train Simulator will not run on a computer using the ATI RAGE MOBILITY -M video card. I spoke with Microsoft and HP, but there is no fix to this problem. (OmniBook 6000, 256 RAM, 800 Pentium III)

Excitement!

This is a fun game with terrific design. If you don't want to drive the train, sit back in the passenger's section, smoke a cigar, and enjoy the scenery. What a wonderfully inexpensive way to take a ride on the Orient Express!!

Difficult.

I admit to be a gaming novice. I expected better from Microsoft, that's why I purchased the item. To get the game to run on Windows XP, I had to completely uninstall my Norton Secuity program. I ran the free ride, how boring. The tutorials are a little better. While I was struggling with the installation process, I contacted the manufacturer for guidance. They basically told me to "read the manual, dummy". I think runnung this program on XP has created some problems for Xplosiv, and that's why I got the "attitude". Definitely a "last ride" for me.

More info, better computer, i'm ready!

Yesterday at BestBuy.com I saw that they said they "had" Train Sim, with 5-7 day shipping. They DO NOT have the game, they say they do, but think it will be out in 5-7 days so then they can ship it. They do have the minimum requirements, here they are. Pentium II Processor w/ 350mhz, Windows 95/98/2000/Millenium Edition/or ME, 32 MB system memory for 95/98/and ME, 64MB for 2000, SVGA 16-bit color monitor supporting 800-600 reseloution, DirectX 7.0a or higher-compatible 4MB videocard capable of 800-600 reseloution in 32k colors, sound card:DirectX7.0a or higher-compatible, CD-ROM 4X drive speed, compatible Microsoft mouse or pointing device, DirectX 7.0a or higher, and speakers or headphones. I'm no longer worried about my system performance, because I just ordered a Pentium 4 with a 32MB video Card. But now that the requirements are up, you guys can check your systems.

Superb Experience - Gotta love Trains

I totally agree with the Customer from Idaho and others - it really gives you a real life experience, and can be an "addictive" experience
I run it on Windows 2000 and have no problems of downloading and crashing. I hesitate to say but have the impression Windows XP doesn't have enough "steam" for it. Also you need a good graphics/video card. My real joy is driving the steam trains - Deisels don't have the same degree of difficulty - !!!! Ever slid back down a steep grade or gone nowhere with a Deisel.

Noch 8 goes Microsoft on this one

This game is out of sight. With good graphics and realistic operation. This game is for train lovers and people who don't really like trains. This game has almost everything to drive and work trains. You can do anything from running the summer express on the Northeast Corridor. To switching cars in the yard on Marias Pass. To managing a short passenger run on the Tokyo-Hakone electric line in Japan. This game has everything you need to know about becoming a railroad lover.

Won't run on all machines

I purchased this software, but after spending the forty-five minutes installing the software, I attempted to run the program for the first time. It hung the computer, and continued to do so each time I attempted running it. Eventually after my eighth or minth attempt, Windows reported an incompatibility issue with my video driver. I checked the Microsoft website to discover this is a chronic problem with this product. I verified that I did indeed have the most recent video driver, and downloaded the DivX drivers from the Microsoft website, as suggested by Microsoft, but still the computer froze each time I attempted to run the software. I also attemped to change video settings, but still no luck. Once again, Microsoft came through putting out a product that is buggy and does work. After spending a full Saturday on this worthless product, I eventually removed this software from my machine.

Cheap Software

As a huge fan of Microsoft software, I regret to say this is the lowest quality ever sold by them. Microsoft even skimped on the software packaging. Just a cheap CD envelope and brochure type key card. The software has a somewhat unfinished feel to it. The scenery and models are extremely simple and plain. I attempted 2 installations with this software, and my computer has not been the same since. I strongly urge anyone to wait for a few versions to come before paying for Train Simulator. If this were any item other than software, it would go right back to the store to be returned. For Microsoft, Shame on you! I am now a skeptical Microsoft buyer. -Long Live Quality!

Buyer Beware

Avoid this product if you have an ATI Rage Pro video card in your machine. You do not find out until after installation of the game and checking the ReadMe file that it is not supported. Microsoft's suggestion is to download the latest driver from ATI with no guarantee that it will work. Unless you are adept at installing video drivers I would suggest leaving this game in the store. Too bad one star is the minimum rating because this product deserves a zero.
