Unless you need something to put you to sleep, you can skip this one. Given, It was originally published in 2001, so the graphics could be much better, but in the end this is just a very boring game. Essentially, you get to drive a range of different trains, but there is none of the strategy you find in something like Rail Road Tycoon.
What simulator?

I installed the game, only to have it crash everytime it got past the "loading" screen. My drivers are up to date on supported video and sound cards. I also disabled all programs running in the background and got the same result.
So I uninstalled the program and attempted to reinstall it. That was a mistake - about one minute into the install process, I got a BSOD. Everytime I've tried to reinstall, BSOD.
What simulator? I can't even install the program now to find out how good or bad it is! My real mistake was purchasing this program. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

No, not the locomotives in Train Simulator, it's your computer that will need to be FAST. Our fairly new 2.2 Ghz P4 with Geforce 4 card still stutters in some views. Forget the stated system requirements.
If your system is up to the task, the trains are good looking and so is the scenery, but that's all this game is, operating trains. Sounds facinating, and it really is in a way, but it does grow boring fairly soon.
Just imagine driving an 18 wheeler for the first time. Up through the gears, perched way over traffic. Cool experince, and then you just drive and drive and drive. Much like running a train. "Wow cool" quickly becomes "just a job".
If you already like flying simulated airplanes for hours on end and trains appeal to you, you may be glad you bought it. Otherwise, I say it's best to leave this train at the station.
Turn down those video settings!

I was excited about getting this game. I love trains. I installed it on my 800 Mh, 256 meg Ram machine and started playing. My system crashed within 5 minutes. I rebooted and it crashed again. Hmmm. I went into the settings and turned down the video to poor quality. Now it doesn't crash. It seems to me, that based on the minimum system requirements, my machine should handle this well. There are other bugs as well; I cannot run my train in snow for example, I get a window asking me if I want to send this error to Microsoft. Then the program shuts down. So, I play this game with the settings turned down and without the full array of options. And I have fun. But a game this expensive should not be shipped with such blatant bugs. Buy it if you love trains, though.

If you enjoy trains and complex computer sims than you should enjoy this game. Since I live in Philadelphia, I can attest that the scenary is not only good looking but accurate.
Some of the other reviewers have complained about the hardware requirements for the game. I have a Compaq AMD Athlon 1.2ghz, 128 megs RAM, 32mb TNT2 card computer and the game runs smoothy and well except for the opening video sequence.
If you are someone that is seriously (and I heavily emphasize that) into trains, than you will enjoy this game. I only deducted a star because it has too few locomotives in it IMHO (what? No Pennsy GG-1 or any American Steam locomotives!).

With Microsoft coming out with Train Sim., I wanted it instantly. The first thing I noticed was the amazing graphics. It was easy to start the train, but only certain trains can go on certain tracks. It's fun at first, yet gets old easy. All you do is drive a train. Don't waste $30 like I did! This game is one of the very rare swings and misses by Microsoft.

I really enjoyed this game. When i first bought it i had a little problem installing it but that was on behalf of my computer. The game is very realistic, it clears your mind, and helps relax you. There are some challenging parts but what game is fun when you can beat it in the first hour you play it. I gave this game 5 stars because i really like the softwear Microsoft makes. So if anyone is interested in Trains then this is one of the best games on the market money can buy, and not to mention this game is cheap.

If you like Flight Simulator, you're likely to love Train Simulator. This game literally puts you in the engineer's seat. Microsoft has worked closely with Amtrak, BNSF, Flying Scotsman Railways, Kyushu Railway Co., Odaku Electric Railway, and the Venice-Simplon Orient Express to bring you 600 miles of track to explore. You get tutorials that teach you the basics of driving a train. You recieve dozens of activities for you to complete. You can create your own rolling-stock and even your own railroads with the editors that are included with the game. But it doesn't stop there! There are many groups that are dedicated to producing add-ons you can purchase online, many are free! Train Simulator recieved the 2001 Reader's Choice Award of Model Railroading Magazine! This is a railroad experience you wil not soon forget!

All you flight simmers, stick to FS. I guess TS is all right for a first try by microsoft, but really, even enron could come up with something better. The selection of trains and tracks barely cuts it, and even though the graphics are nice, the view options stink. For instance, in passenger view you cannot look behind you period. In cab view, you can only look directly ahead and to the sides. No back view either. About the only thing that is slightly exciting is the derailments. Hit a piling at 200 mph and watch your train be pasted all over the map. And all this junk for 2.7 gigs! If, however, you choose to ignore sage advice, like I did, get this game as cheaply as possible.
