Train Simulator (Jewel Case)
This software is both a serious train and railroad simulator and a
fun-to-play scenerio-based game, depending on how you choose to use it.
It is very old now, but is currently still the best that is available
due to it's modability and versitility, and the wealth of third-party
ad-ons, both payware and freeware, available for it.
I have rated it 4 stars even though the graphics are quite ugly by todays
standards, and it could definately use a serious update. The
reason I have rated it so highly is that it is so customizable, and you
can easily make a whole new and MUCH improved product out of it by
adding content readily available from many sources. You can even
create your own content, including new train and scenic object models,
new play or sim scenerios, and even new routes or "worlds". So much
beautiful freeware is available for it that you need never spend another
cent on it even while upgrading it tremendously. But I highly recomend
that you take a good look at some of the wonderful and stunning pay-ware
content available at very reasonable prices from a number of sources.
One thing, if you have an old version, you MUST download the upgrade
from Microsoft, or you won't have nearly as pleasant of an experience.
As far as bang for the buck goes, this piece of software is nearly
impossible to beat, especially if you are a rail fan and/or like to
play with or model trains and railroads.
Just buy it, for pete's sake. If you are even interested enough to
be looking, then it will be well worth the paltry $10.00 they are now
asking for it.

I really enjoy this game, but my computer doesn't. I have Windows Vista and for some reason this program gives my system the heebie-jeebies. It does not like to load. When it does the program hesitates to follow commands. Microsoft is putting out a new Train Simulator. I trust I'll have better luck with that one.
Everything my son hoped it would be!

This is a quite realistic video game though some activities lack imagination and interest. Overall the scenery is good but the locale is quite limited. all of the activities are concentrated in western Montana and on one 200-mile section of BNSF track. Becomes rather borrrring after a while. Fortunately, add-ons are available elsewhere, which provide a broader railroad gaming experience.
Train Simulator... Fun to learn but not to play

It's really fun to take all the tutorials that are short, loke 5-25 mins. but some last as long as 2 hours and that is too long! It's stressful to have all these windows popping up, whistles going off when you are trying to go down a steep grade on icy rails at midnight!! That's too much for me! That's why I'm selling my copy .... As long as I can play it at minimal stress times.
Much better than I thought

I wrote the nasty review below when the sim first appeared. 2 years later... Boy was I wrong. Simply a must have for any sim person.
What changed?
The Sim is more a learning tool. It has become a focus for learning about railroad operation and in turn, railroad history - itself an important component of American history.
In short, I was wrong, wrong, wrong. I have since bought all the expansion packs and even upgraded to a better computer so that it would run better. Oh, and the kid is older now and plays it for hours.
ORIGINAL (WRONG) REVIEW BELOW:
Wanna spend a few hours driving a train? If so, this is the sim for you. Love MS Flight Simulator and wanna drive a train? Buy this immediately.
However if you want to be entertained by something other than pretending to drive thousands of tons through the mountains, than forget this sim and go back to Railroad Tycoon2. My 4.5 year old is a steam train fanatic, but this sim bores him in less than ten minutes compared to the 30 mins+ he gets from RT2.
The graphics are great, though I am having problems with tiles appearing when they shouldn't and with the changes to the controls not sticking when made by the mouse. But how long can you look at neat stuff on your monitor?
So far I have only driven the Acela and the Flying Scotsman; maybe there's more exciting scenarios elsewhere. Then again, I have always preferred combat sims over the flight sim so maybe MS sims are not for me.
