Steering wheel is a must have to enjoy!

I got this game for free when I bought my PS2. I've played it at best buy when they had a display set up using a steering wheel with force feedback and pedals and it was a total blast! It felt like I was actually sitting in the car driving it. It helped too that I was sitting in best buy's racing seat office chair. On the flip side, I have tried playing this game at home using the ps2 controller alone and it is pure toture. I think it is the most boring game I have ever played that way. the controls are just too hard and it's a driving simulator game so theres no getting a "turbo boost" and just rocking through a race. It feel like i was back in drivers ed trying to pass the test for my license. Get the steering wheel and get a good one like logitech's G25! I'd give the game five stars with the steering wheel.

This game has to be played with a steering wheel to be fully enjoyed

Thats the game summed up. Without a wheel the game is fairly frustrating, its really difficult to be precise enough with the dual shock and enjoy the experience. I daresay there are some Gran Turismo experts who have been using a dual shock since the early games who are good at it and enjoy it but I didnt.
Plug in a wheel and everything changes. Its much, much easier to find the proper line, the force feedback is so good you can literally feel in the steering when you cross the apex and when you should accelerate out of the turn.
It turned a game I found fairly frustrating into a magical experience. Its that simple this game is all about cornering properly, coming into the corner at the proper speed so you dont understeer too much, finding the apex, and accelerating out of the corner approrpiately. All these things are made much easier with a wheel and pedals.
The game is really good at modelling forces through the wheel and the cornering feels very organic.
The game itself is graphically below the quality of new hi-def games. Though the cars themselves look very nice, and behave realistically. Every other aspect of this game is superior to any other racing game since its release.(still waiting for GT5 to see if it tops this)
The devil is in the detail in racing games and all the details are right in this game. From the thumps of a highly sprung race suspension to the understeer of a front drive car, to the exact dynamics of how a car would react in each individual corner. It is all here and it is these details that make this game better than any other racing game out there.
I read a lot of reviews here and really the complaints in them are just minor quibbles. Or they stem from frustration over the fact that they're not very good at the game since its fairly demanding. My advice to those people is to buy a wheel/pedals and give the game another try.
If you buy a Ps3 you dont even have to buy an expensive Ps3 wheel, older Logitech PC USB force feedback wheels work great with little hassle with this game. You can probably pick one up for about $20 if you get one on eBay.

Definitely one of the better Gran Turismo Games

For being a little older than the kids (people in their mid 20s) down the street when I first started playing it I was excited to play it for hours on end. The one draw back is the game just didn't change much from it's predecesor and even though the quality was better I was not really to crazy about it after reaching the Formula 1 part of the game. This is where it got awesome, but it takes some work to get here. So if you are patient it is worth it, otherwise might want to look for another racing game.

I actually got this game the day before it came out because my local game store just had it laying around. I was really excited because I loved Gran Turismo 3. Well I popped it in and fun I guess, here are my impressions. The developers made a huge deal about the graphics being improved but it really isn't all that much of a difference from the last one. There are constant frame rate issues throughout the game but they don't affect game play too much. The soundtrack is vastly improved from the last one. The sound effects for the cars are now more diverse, but really hasn't improved much in terms of quality from Gran Turismo 3. There are way more cars now, and the used car lots from Gran Turismo 2 are back. The car customization is even deeper than before and now includes after market companies. The physics are improved, I guess, but I really found them just annoying at times, making the game less fun. The race tracks are the same for the most part, if not a little more detailed, but there are a couple new ones. The irritating license tests are still here in all their glory. The new B-Spec mode is interesting but can get boring pretty quickly. Really, Gran Turismo 4 is just a more detailed version of Gran Turismo 3, or a kind of expansion pack depending on how you look at it.

Excellent Game! Realistic and pretty good graphics for its age. Huge level of difficulty which makes the game really interesting and addicting! Many option such as track, circuit, dirt, snow, driving missions and of course the licenses! Game takes forever to complete however doesn't get boring or annoying. There are more new games that you can get but GT4 is an old time classic. Highly recommended to anyone who likes racing games.

As a fan of Gran Turismo since it's inception, I would say it keeps getting better. The game is so addictive I have to put a timer on to remind myself to stop playing. The courses are well designed and the graphics awesome. I like the big selection of racers from all over the world. Vrooooooom, over the top!
