Well I must admit that I was VERY dissapointed in this game. (And to show you I NEVER write a review I usually leave that up to my husband --- who also wrote one) but I just couldn't leave out my voice of dissapointment on this one. I was so excited for this game to come out I pestered and pestered my husband to get it for my birthday (March 30th) that he had to give it to me a day early. So I recieved it the day it came out and I must admit that I will be returning it I was that disapointed in it!!
First of all it has removed all the qualities that set it apart from all the other RP games out there except maybe one or two. The battles don't make sense anymore. You can't tell who you are attacking and the personal attact has been removed so they are just attacking air and when they retaliate you have no way of knowing what they did because the dialogue box has been removed.
The army no longer reflects the strengths that you build upon the hero so they are only as strong as the sheer numbers go up. And the hero isn't personable any more. They don't have thier own specialities.
The magic is VERY confusing to deal with....
The statistic box is to big and doesn't make sense at a glance any more (what ever happened to being able to read - why must we rely so heavily on pictures now?)
Overall I must admit that it put quite a damper on my birthday happiness and plans (I had planed to play the game all weekend but ended up just disapointed instead!)
Although to be fair the caravans are pretty neat and I liked the white tigers and the idea that once you captured a water wheel you didn't have to go to it every week was nice.
This isn't as bad as people make it.

Most of what should be said has been said.
Like the previous HOMM's, the music is absolutely stunning.
Unlike the previous HOMM's the storyline is extremely well done and addictive.
All in all, a great single player game, but a horrible multiplayer experience.
This game would be AWESOME if the A.I. was a lot tougher!

I really love everything they did to Heros 4 except for the fact that the A.I. stinks. When I play Heros 3, I lose at least 50 percent of the time. However, when I play Heros 4, there is almost no possiblity to lose to the A.I. For that reason, this game is REALLY BORING. I was very disapointed. If they patched the A.I. it would really give new life to this game. But, this game might be a very fun multiplayer game. It's too bad they game makers are taking so long to make it a multiplayer game.

You have to forgive 3do. They just can't compete with a game like WarCraft3, or Unreal Tournament 2003. At the same time, though, they never claimed to.
HOMM 4 is the BEST turn based RPG/Strategy out there. I've played every HOMM in the series, and each installment continues to bring the series to new heights. HOMM always has been a kind of underdog, never selling that many copies, but lots of people play it over and over again.
Some improvements they've made are a 3D environment, a complete engine overhaul, completely new graphics, a new magic system, etc. They've added quite a bit for only one step in the series.
So, should you buy this game, you ask? It depends, if you like a slower paced, tension built, time stealing kind of game, which requires a lot of thought, and intelligence, then you may have what it takes. Like I said, it's not a RTS, or a FPP Shooter either, so don't expect it to be.
Not worth your time

This isn't worth your time. The First Heroes games were excellent. I spent about 2 month playing H3. But the fourth game is disappointing, it has several innovations, that make the game worse. The Heroes 3 game is older, but much better.
Don't fear Changes!

I've read some of the reviews and i find it very interesting that almost everyone wants the game to be like HOMM 3.
If this game series would everytime be the same with the same races and spells, same combat system and creatures it will end like the "Might and Magic" series which never changed. That's why it got worse and worse. Some changings would have been great to make the game more interesting.
HOMM 4 has changed and it is great! Now you have to change your strategies and your creature combinations completely.
Don't fear changes, they defend games of getting bored and old fashioned.
I'll compare it to other non HoM games. (someone needs to)

This was my first PC game ever, on;y 3 years latter did I finnaly get to own my own copy (last compy would have required too many pricy replacements & the install caused a tottal memory loss crash) I've played so many games in those between years, but they were all lacking heavily. This game makes other games boring fast because it offers MORE of everything, but it still has it's downsides. I agree with the pros, though I really don't like those annoying grids from earlier games. The cons for me were the amount of buildings you could create & the restrictions that went with them (you have to give up one type to another) & there just erentenough maps & campaignes. Luckily, the expansion packs should fix that nicely. The combat & magic sound FX were cute, but other games made me somewhat annoyed at the lack of BG music. & that's about it. Technicle support is available on Ubisoft forums, patches can be downloaded anywhere (for technicle fixes), & if you need them, cheats & walkthroughs are plentiful, but even the newest of newbies shouldn't need a walkthrough on this.
Why?

A perfect example of the folly of fixing that which isn't broken. 3DO has managed to make one of my favorite games a major let down. If you liked Heroes 2 & 3 (true improvements over #1), this is likely to disappoint you. Annimations are poor, important arrtibutes are hidden in screens way too cluttered in "decoration," and the new magic system is just plain poor. This (I'd guess) ill conceived attempt to move to a more AD&D like format is breaking the strength of previous versions - simplicity and non-conformity. You'll be better off spending your money on something else.

I have been reading through these reviews and have finally noted something very interesting about a change brought to the HOMM series.
"You must CHOOSE between which armies you'd like to have populate your castle, eg, choosing Champions means you can't have Angels, and choosing Monks means you can't have Crusaders. There's no upgrades possible for units. You just get them and away you go."
You see, I've been playing HOMM for many years now and started playing a similar type of game called Disciples (they've had 2 versions out so far.) The thing is, both have their merit and things i like about they're game play. HOMM has always been more commercial, while Disciples was more unique and a bit darker in tone. However, it uses that concept of selecting the path of your troops quoted above. If you need fighters, you have two paths that branch out as they gain experience. Example: Standard fighter/knight or Witch-hunter(Resistant to mind attacks). As these types progressed in experience, they could become Crusaders or Angels, etc. But you have to decide the first time you build a structure. You can't go back until the next map.
It sounds to me, that EDO has taken note of it's "competitors" in this market and wanted to try their hand at offering similar features/tactics. I have to give them credit for the effort. Though, from these reviews, it seems I simply need to try the game myself to see whether it plays well. Anyways, that's just my spin on this. i truly enjoy both games for their own approach. Though, for those who are looking for a slightly different spin on the game style, I highly suggest you check out the Disciples series as well. (www.strategyfirst.com).
Happy gaming.

This is a great game for D&D fans looking for a change. I haven't played HOMM up till now, so I can't comment on comparisons, but, it is still a great D&D strategy game. HOMM IV is unlike normal D&D character campaigns into dungeons but still has the D&D flavor of monsters in a strategy game. The game is huge with massive scenarios and campaigns to play with that is well worth the money compared to other games with great graphics.
I actually like the battle format and have enjoyed many hours playing the different scenarios and am just starting campaigns. I just loved getting the ingredients and then generating dragons to go out and fight with. I have read negative comments about battle format but like it anyway as the hero is so involved in the battle right with the underlings. The computer AI is good but not perfect because otherwise you would lose as you aren't perfect either. I also like there are 2 autosaves of current turn and previous turn so you can backup from a serious mistake.
negatives. There are a few like :
Memory leakage. It is best to stop the computer after playing each scenario as the winning and losing screen can kill the pc.
Lining up your character so he doesn't get shot is impossible and I always end up losing my mages at the start. But is sounds pretty realistic.
I have lost alot of sleep as I play just alittle bit more before realizing it is 2:30am and I am not going to get 8 hours, but what fun!
