I've read through the reviews on this game and was surprised at how many bad reviews it received. I do think that some of the points in the bad reviews hold some merit but I don't think it is as terrible as they make it out to be. It is true that it doesn't play like HOMM1-HOMM3 but then I wouldn't want it too. If I wanted HOMM 1-3 I'd just load those games up. As far as the "poor" graphics...well...HOMM 1-3 didn't have exactly the best graphics I'd ever seen. HOMM4 I believe does have better graphics but they do have a different "feel" then the previous games. However I say 'So what?' As for there not being much difference in the difficulty levels, there wasn't much difference in the difficulty levels for HOMM 1-3! Once you know how to win at a game you can always beat it whatever the difficulty level is.
I think that this game suffers from the same sequel difficulties as everything else, whether its a movie or a book or a video game. If you change it too much the "cult" crowd goes crazy and if you don't change it enough everyone else gets bored.
I believe the ultimate question is whether I have had fun playing the game. The answer is 'yes, I did'. Is it worth the money? In my opinion 'yes'. There were some things I would like to see different and I do agree with some of the negative comments. In a nut shell I'd say that if you are looking for a total repeat of HOMM 1-3 then you probably won't like it too much. If you are interested in something a little different and are not to picky about having just a graphically glorified version of the previous game then I think you would enjoy this. I do believe that the negative reviews have been too harsh.
This used to such a good game............

If you are a fan of HOMM III and prior, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. You will hate it more than you have hated anything else in your life. The game has lost all of the charm and structure that existed in HOMM III, and was replaced with a visually chaotic, tedious and overly complex game. Do yourself a favor and avoid this game at all costs.
Very disappointing

I was/am a huge fan of the Heroes series. Was actively involved in the forums and the fan base. Even have a Hero in this game named after my on-line persona.
Couldn't like this game, moved so slow and lost the charm of the previous versions.
It's a shame, hopefully Ubisoft can revive the magic in Heroes 5.......
a let down

I recently purchased hommIV and although it has some great new features such as allowing the hero to take part in combat and the new magic system, still it's a bit of let down. I can only wonder why there was no random map generator included. That great feature of homm III kept that game playing in my household years after all the campaigns had been played and replayed, since the random map generator allowed my kids and me, or their friends to be on teams and take on the computer generator teams. The lack of a random map generator greatly diminishes the long term play value of homm IV. I can only hope that the producers will include a random map generator in one of the patches or updates. Also the return to mandatory operatic music - of a bombastic type at that - is really unfanthonable. Why the producers sought to resurrect this feature from the earlier games is a little unclear.
Although I would probably still buy the game - I was a little disappointed in it - hopefully the random map generator issue can be resolved in future updates

I have been a huge fan of HOMM series. Heroes 4 seems rushed and thrown together. Everything I liked about the versions previous to this seems to have been neglegted. God I hope they learn that they need to keep th eessence of the game here and what isn't broke please don't fix it...this is a totally different game and it is not as entertaining as the previous versions. Please bring back HOMM 3 type game play. IMHO A much better game is Disciples 2 by Strategy First...this is what I was hoping Heroes was going to evolve into... if they had to goof with the total game design...no such luck. So disappointed, playing Disciples 2 and shelving Heroes 4!
Different from Heroes II and Heroes III...

First of all, I would like to say that I do not think this is a bad game. I played Heroes I, II, and III, and loved them, though they were all fairly similar. The *graphics* in Heroes IV are much better than the graphics in the others. However, the *artwork* in Heroes II and Heroes III is far superior. There are tons of new "innovative" features in Heroes IV that differ from the other games, some of wich I will list here:
Heroes actually enter combat (they can be killed).
You can have multiple Heroes in an army.
You can send individual groups of troops out of the army on the map and have them run around (without a Hero).
Caravans send troops from castle to castle automatically as they are produced.
You have to choose between two different units when purchasing certain creature dwellings in your castle (if you want them both, you need two castles).
There are a few bad sides to this game though, including a memory leak that wasn't fixed by the patch, and a quite inferior map-editor. I thought it was kind of annoying how there was no unit upgrades, but the game was very well balanced, in respect to the different castle types and their unique attributes. The campaigns are well done, and entertaining. Overall, this is a fun game, but it lacked the certain feel, or "magic" that Heroes 2 and Heroes 3 had... and the fans of those games will know what I mean.
*NOTE* If you are still unsure as to whether or not you want to get this game, keep in mind that the system requirements are much steeper than in the previous games, so it might not be very enjoyable if your computer isn't that great.
This game is ruined what previous versions achieved

This game is a joke. I was a big fun of HMM series since I've seen HMM-1. But this game had ruined everything. First of all it has memory leak and all I could get from tech support was "we know it". So much advertised new spells won't give you much. Your hero is locked to ONE magic school (because of the skill system). Well, I'm done with hmm-4 it is already on the shelf and even memory leak patch will not change anything. Even my wife (she's even bigger fun of HMM) had admitted that this game is BORING ! That's worst definition for game. So if you want to play HMM stick with HMM-2 or HMM-3 with additions.
This product (I can't name it game) is not worth your money !
Can't wait

Stumbling upon HOMM 2 a couple of years ago, I was very impressed with New World Computing's job in taking this kind of gaming genre to the max. Turn based strategy is hard to turn into an exciting computer game, but HOMM 2 delivered. HOMM 3 was a good upgrade with better graphics, easier gameplay, etc, but was still basically HOMM 2. The programmers have totally revamped the engine for the 4th edition though, and I am expecting nothing less than a blockbuster with totally new features while still retaining the character that made HOMM 2 great.
HOMM IV falls way short

First of this is not the US game. THey are selling a knock off UK version. Secondly it does not have Multi Player support, not even hot seat, even though it says it does. You can upgrade it py patching all the way to v3.0 and get multi but most places with the patch are pay sites since 3DO is no longer in business.

i have played heros 3 and armageddons blade expanshion. haveing played heros 4 i half to say that the only real downside to heros is that your options to level them are quite limated. ex, i want to level my knight with order magic, i probly cant. other then that the heros work fine, although its rough on low level casters in battle, which makes sense. as for towns, i like the new town defences quite a lot, it makes much more sense now, for the price you pay you get VERY strong defences. as for spells, the verity and power has gone way up, which nearly cripples might heros. (if it werent for there godlike combat power, might would be helpliss) on the creature side of things, each side is pretty well balenced, also because you need 2 towns to get every kind, its a good push for expanshion. the decision to choose one over another is alwase hard on the player, which is good because it shows that the creatures are well balenced. caravans are probly the second bes improvement in this virshion of heros, that and heros actuly in combat. word of advice, dont mix towns creature tipes, you will lose, and for gods sake dont mix apposed alignments eg. life and death. also if you want to play every campagin its going to be a LONG haul, which is good, must stop now must play more heros 4...
