As a 1st time buyer in this series, this what I would have liked to have known before I bought:
- Overall Context: 6 races total, each with different creatures. Each town generates a specific race and the more it is built up, the more different kind of creatures it generates. The game then centers around capturing these towns with armies built of creatures and heroes
- Heroes: Heroes start as either a warrior or mage and add abilities of any kind through leveling. Choices available are somewhat random (you only have 3 choices each time you level) and this is a little frustrating. You can also increase abilities through shrines and purchase. The abilities you have somewhat determine the choices you get each time you level.
- Races: Some races are more compatible than other races and there is a certain skill involved in choosing which race to mix in your army, and which races to use against which races.
- Equipment: Only Heroes can use equipment or potions (potions are useless for the most part). Some strategy is involved in figuring out which ways to bolster your hero, either with equipment or various temporary attribute shrines, before battle.
- Retreating: If creatures retreat, they die. If Heroes retreat (before they are killed), they are teleported to a town and the dead Heroes are re-incarnated. This introduces the twist of having all (or mostly) Hero armies that can wear down an enemy before main army attacks.
Game Play: Armies and heroes move on the "adventure map" until they encounter enemies. Then game play switches to a "combat map" where there is a kind of turn based combat. On both the adventure and combat maps, each player takes a turn like in chess or other board games.
Computer/Player Option: You can play against the computer or choose to play both/all sides.
Not bad, not bad at all

I just got the game today. I have been a fan of the Series since HMM one. If you played previous ones before, you know what you will get in essence.
If you want to know the difference between this one & the old ones...
-Well, the graphic is a lot better, the creator once again did an excellent job. I am impressed.
-You get the same problem as the old Heroes III- Long loading time if you don't have a new computer.
-Heroes could be used in combat. COOL idea.
-The stats, magic, & heroes leveling has more depth... but it makes the whole system more complex. In other words, a bit more interesting, but you lose the simple elegance of the old Heroes.
If you have been a Heroes fan, buy it. If you are new to the Series, I suggest you try Heroes III complete first.

For years I've preferred games distributed by 3DO, largely
because they were so well programmed. HOMM4 is very poorly
programmed. It runs slow right off the bat, and quickly and
steadily slows down until it locks up the system, requiring
a cold reboot. It's a serious memory leak. I've run into
numerous other bugs as well, such as the weapons shops
suddenly ceasing to work, inventory items vanishing, etc.
The AI is also poor, making the game much too easy to win,
even at high difficulty levels. This is a sad end to what had
been arguably the greatest game series.
Different and fun

I'm a huge Heroes fan. I got the original when it first came out and have been hooked ever since, and unlike almost all other Heroes (especially Heroes 3) fans, I really enjoy H4. Yes, it is a lot different than the previous games, and there are some features, such as the no hex battlefield, that I think should be changed, but really, no one's perfect, not even a gaming company. And for all you H3 fans who complain that the game is too different from the rest of the series, I say that if 3DO was going to make something similar to H3, they'd make it in the form of an expansion for H3. H4 is a different game, so it's going to have some differences; eventually, players are going to get bored with the same old, same old of H3, so change is necessary. I'm not saying that H3 is a bad game; on the contrary, if I had to choose, I'd probably pick H3 over H4, only because I'm more familiar with it and have been playing it a lot longer.
The thing that I really enjoy about H4 is that it's familiar enough that I was able to learn how to play it quickly, but it's also different enough that I can go back and play H3 and not feel like I'm stepping back to a more primitive game, such as it is with Heroes 1-3; if someone has H3, they're not going to play H1 or 2 because H3 is simply a better game. H1 and 2 are classic games, yes, but anyone would admit that H2 is better than H1 and H3 is better than H2. H4, however, is so different from H3 that you can play them like different games with similar aspects. So don't knock H4 before you try it!
Wonderful.

I started off less than impressed and slowly I've grown very fond of it.
I've played HOMM I, II, and III, and IMHO, this is the best one. It is chalk full of subtleties.
I do miss the combat grid.
I'm very impressed with how balanced it is too.
I love the campaigns so far. Very big and challenging without being boring.
The new spells are fun. In previous versions, you would develop a pattern and stick to it. I've used two completely different spell strategies in two campaigns and both are interesting and fun.
I love the character skill development. Offers interesting choices and radically different combat strategies depending on the skills chosen.
I'm very happy with it.
Great game ! One dissapointment.

I think this game needs to be the game of the year.
OK, the graphics aren`t great but not bad either.
I had played "Heroes of Might and magic III". It drived me crazy: one good step, win the battle and the victory is yours!
Heroes IV is quite the same but it has more challenges, more options, more new characters and more monsters and different cities.
The option to decide, which monsters you want to create in your
cities, is nice too.
I was very impressed that the heroes in the game can change their
clsses to more advanced ones : like a soccerer becomes a fireguard and then becomes a warlock.
So, what is my dissapointment from this game ? well, it might seem to you laughable, but I don't like that this game doesn't have monster upgrading.
So "3DO" did it again with another great game.
So, BUY THIS GAME!
Buy it for the fun, not for nostalgia!

I got the game HOMM4 as a gift, and I had no idea what Heroes series was. I am enjoying this game thoroughly.
If you read through the reviews, you'd see two distinct categories - those who have played past Heroes games and those who haven't. Players of past Heroes rank this one very low, while most of the newcomers rank it high (like me).
The graphics is above average and the gameplay is quite enjoyable. The negative factor in the game is the poorly written and often very confusing manual and the lack of multiplayer support. Even after reading the manual several times, I'm having to figure a lot of things out for myself. Not that there are too many of them out there, but some websites and FAQs provide much better help. 3DO needs to hire good HelpWriting team for the manuals. Don't even try the official website of the game since it dishes the same garbage in an even terse language!
As for multiplayer support, what is the use of such a feature if the game is not good enough to play? Slam down that extra $$ for the extension if you can't live without it..
If you are a Heroes series player, you're better stay off this game since it'll shatter your existing 2D castle of expectation. But if you are new to this series, this game is excellent for building that new castle of fun!!
[PS: Don't forget to make use of the game update for latest patch without which you are playing a game not worth talking about!]

I'm just adding something here to the three previous reviews, since I agree with them and don't want to be repetitive. Read those too. A very cool game, but the biggest disappointment is that there is only one XL scenario. The others seem limited by their size. Also, it doesn't really get much harder as you crank up the play levels. The 'wandering' monsters are harder to defeat, but they kill off the computer's heroes, too, so you don't have to worry about fortress defense as much. I love this game, but give a slight preference to HMM-3 (more so when combined with expansion pack).
Disappointing

HOMM4 is not a bad game but it is a bad update. It is not very different from HOMM3, the only real difference is that you can use multiple heroes in one army and they actually do melee combat in battles. Not that doing combat is any great advantage, the hero is a single creature and doesn't last long against a large group of opponents. Other changes in the game seem to be there just so they have changes in the game. The changes don't improve game play and HOMM4 isn't really an improvement or more exciting or have better graphics. Still a good game, but if you have HOMM3 buying HOMM4 is a waste of money.
As mentioned elsewhere the AI is poor and the game has a serious memory leak. A patch should fix the memory leak but I doubt one will improve the AI. The AI wouldn't matter so much if you could play against human opponents but the multiplayer feature is not active, to be added later. Another sign that they rushed this to market with making money as their only concern, quality not considered.

I only got into the Heroes craze when Heroes 3 came out because I was deprived and didn't have a computer till about a couple of years ago. I loved Heroes 3 a lot. I mean, we're talking no sleep a lot. The multiplayer was fun, the campaigns were fun and challenging...overall it was a great game. I was incredibly excited for Heroes 4 and I have to say, I'm not disappointed at all. It's exactly what I expected it to be and I really like the changes that they made. Actually, I'm sorta surprised at what some people think of the game because to me everything that was done to the game made it a different and enjoyable experience. I think the idea of making the heroes more important is excellent and doing the "one or the other" thing with the creatures is an effective idea as well. I find the campaigns to be a lot more engaging this time around and I really got into the story when playing through them (that jerk Worton...). I will say one thing, though, that is the worst possible thing that could've happened to this game. No Multiplayer! It's the one thing (to me) that keeps it from being 5 stars at this point. I think as soon as the patch comes out (whenever that may be) this game will be what keeps my senioritis thriving :-). Heroes 4 will definately replace Heroes 3 as the game that gets me 3 hours of sleep a night. All in all, I think that Heroes is a worthy successor to Heroes 3 and will draw many people in and not let them escape for a long time.
