I'm Blind, I'm Blind!! No, wait, its just the game....

This game is more fun than having a bag of hammers dropped on your head, but not by much. A game where you rely on stealth and not your trigger finger is a good idea but I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING. I knew that I was in trouble on the very first mission. It went like this: Me: "Where am I? Is this a wall or a door? I'll just open it-" Guard: "Hey!" Me: "Oops!" Guard kills me. The End.

Wow. That was fun. Hoo-boy!

Hello? Is this supposed to be entertaining?

Ahem, call me disappointed. Slow, tedious, and full of bugs. Some
times, the guard's heads stretch out like rubber bands for no apparent
reasons. (save, exit, restart) Your weapon will disappear, it sounds
like you are firing, but nothing happens and it is no longer
visible. (save, exit, restart). Then, to top it off, all of the sudden
I'm back in windows and the game has simply disappeared. (frequent
saves, restart, hopefully you haven't gone too far before you last
save!) Even without these 'glitches' the game was completely boring,
your character is a guy who sneaks around and tries to bonk people on
the head when they're not looking. Give me the old fashioned chain gun
any day. After reading the other 5 star reviews, I got all excited
... and ordered this extremely disappointing game. The only thing I
liked about the program was the introduction and the cut scenes. I am
not a sceptic, and I walked into this with a completely open mind,
full of anticipation, kinda like Christmas morning, I don't often have
any money to blow on a game. Do yourself a favor and find something
else, if you want it that badly, give me a call and I'll send you mind
COD!

Could have been the greatest game ever...

I remember when I played the demo for this game. It was brilliant - you could stealth around, you had to be startegic and the atmosphere 10 times as tense as any other game ever. You had to loot a mansion and you could pick up some jewels for yourself as well. You had to AVOID making a comotion. The use of sound and light (or lack of them) was excellent as well. It was one of the best levels of any game I had ever played.

I got my hands on the full version and rushed through the first level, eagar to see what theivery lay ahead. When I started playing the second level I found myself making my way through a haunted mine where I had to avoid zombies, kill spiders and eventually free someone from a prison. The whole thieving aspect had been taken away, and not only had degenerated into a standard cliched fantasy hack n slash affair, it was a BAD hack n slash affair. The next 2 or 3 levels were the same. Yes, you had to be stealthy, but not in the same context. I never played on - I had no motivation to.

This could have been one of the best games ever, but in attempting to appeal to the mainstream (lets face it, the thievery aspect wouldn't have sold well on consoles) they messed it up, and they didn't even do the "it's-been-done-before" bit well. At least if it was done well it could have offered some short-term enjoyment (albeit forgetable) so that I wouldn't have completely wasted my money, but as it is it was a missed oportunity. Doesn't even deserve the tag "Thief" most of the time.

Read all the great reviews but...

I finally got around to playing Thief and, given all its wonderful press, I ended up disappointed. Yes, I know the graphics engine is outdated now but even when it came out it must not have been that great. I found the constant stealth factor to actually not be that fun and found it very aggravating at times. Sometimes it takes ALOT of playing time to negotiate and area correctly without alerting the guards. I also found the player controls a little more stiff or crude or less responsive or something than most games of this nature. I played through alot of the first level and then gave up. Maybe it was a blast when it came out but now there are alot of other games that will give me much more fun and excitement. I will give Thief II a try (I already own it) but I feel it will be more of the same.

An alright game

Alright, just about everyone I know said this was one of the best games ever. I've never agreed with them and I do not believe I ever will. The graphics aren't exactly mind blowing nor does the storyline keep you very entertained. You just go, hide, go, hide then run, hide. Not exactly the game to buy if predominately you enjoy shoot em up or fighting games. So save yourself some money and purchase some great games such as Half Life or Resident Evil.

Fantastic game, just don't expect to like the combat

Today, war is pretty boring, mostly because today's weapons require so little skill to use effectively. That is why swordplay is so interesting. Unfortunately, there are only two action games I can name off the top of my head that focus on this time peroid: Interplay's "Die by the Sword" and Eidos's "Thief".

After reviewers told me that Die by the Sword was rediculously hard, I went out and bought Thief. I was very surprised to find this not close to what I expected.

In Thief, your main objective is to avoid combat at all possible costs, since your guy is a poor fencer. Swordfighting is impossible, since the blocking button is totally ineffective, and the guards can take numerous blows to the head. Therefore, you must creep around in the shadows, using distractions and such to get guards out of the way. If you come face to face with a guard around a corner, RUN.

If you've played the playstation hit "Metal Gear Solid", this game is not too different, except it adds a "third degree" of stealth (the dark). Also unlike Metal Gear, the enemies are much, much smarter.

Things go wrong beyond the combat, however, when you start to meet the undead. This game would be 95% perfect if not for these guys. For once, I would like to see an action game without big monsters. Huge problem is, stealth is over. The beasts will not miss you in the dark, it is just a combat game now. How fun.

This will not serve your purpose if you want a swordfighting game, and other than Die by the Sword, I guess nothing will. Avoid "Diablo" or "Diablo II", no matter the temptation, unless you want your combat to be "see monster, click on monster". I recommend this game anyway, just get the code and skip any mission where it appears that you will do nothing but fight undead.

Incredibly difficult

I have to admit this is one of the most difficult games I have ever played. The controls are easy to learn, but the sword has a couple of moves that are hard to pull off. The difficulty is that this game is the complete opposite of most first person games, where the objective is usually to go in with both barrels blazing. Here, that only gets you killed. It is hard to go against the instincts trained in by the other games. Also, some of the levels are so large that it can be easy to get lost. The sound is amazing though...a game like this needs to have sound of the highest caliber to work, and the sound is outstanding. You truly need to hear it to understand. The only other bad thing I can say is the graphics, which are angular and flat. I understand it is necessary with the level of technology when this game was made, but it looks strange. Also, the way the characters move is...dreamy. It doesn't look right. They all kind of lope and limp around.

How ambivalent!

Thief: The Dark Project, in my opinion, was pretty tedious compared to the fast-moving sequel. It started out fine, but it got really dull and annoying when I reached the zombie-infested parts of the game which include levels like Down in the Bonehoard and The Haunted Cathedral. I loved it at first, seeing new types of opponent apart from the usual guards, but the fun dies out pretty quickly because of the level structure. This is'll be a complete nuisance if the difficulty's set on Expert. The objectives of levels which have zombies and burricks are pretty demanding and they're all not located in convenient places. It requires a lot of going back and forth, which means that sometimes you face the enemies all over again as it's impossible to kill more than 1 especially since they move around in groups, so a quick glance, dart and hide is done mostly throughout the game.

The other levels are pretty "civilized", which involve reasonable objectives, and most of these are taken place in the City where it's mostly guaranteed you won't see mythical monsters like the zombies and the burricks.

The reason why this game mainly revolves around these monsters is because of the storyline. Garrett, the thief you play, finds himself being involved with dark Pagan rituals, people who worship the forces of nature and live in woods.

The graphics and lighting are amazing, and really set the atmosphere. I recommend this game, but a getting a lot from it is not to be expected.

Very Immersive!

Theif: The Dark Project.

The known; Your a theif and take on many jobs by your employer. Before each level there is a cut seen that sets it up. Simple but nicely done. Being a theif requires many theif-like equipment. Your trusty bow(that zooms in when you hold the string back long enough), Blackjack(knock out club), A variety of speciality arrows, including a rope arrow. etc.

Being a theif you rely on darkness, hence a visiblity gauge. If it is bright then you are in to much light. Theif also has a sound gauge. If your walking to fast or on noisy floors like metal grating, tiles or gravel, the noise will be much greater.

The game runs smoothly and is very immersive thanks to the great sound effects and good graphics for the time. One thing that some reviewers overlook is the stat summary at the end of the level. It is a nice to see your total and level time, loot, killed bodys, knocked out bodys and discoverd bodys(you can pick up the bodys and hide them to reduce suspicion of other guards. This adds to the feeling of not just going level to level and actually working for a goal. A goal which could simply be saving money to buy equipment at the start of the next level.

Levels are layed out nice. With this point, alot of people complain about the zombie levels. Is that because its not realistic? Not a setting that a theif would normally be put into? Or the fact that they scare the ... out of you. I will never forget the first time I played the second level and saw a corpes. I bent down to inspect it. Well what do you know It started getting up and let out a grotesque moan.

The sound makes this game. Without it, the game would be reduced significantly. With that said, use headphones and play it in the dark. Your heart will race and you will jump when guards see you or you come across something you where not perpared for.
Playablity. Play it every once in awhile(like combat flight sim) and it will keep your interest. With the total time stat it will give you an incentive to try to beat your old time.

Bottom Line. 4&1/2 stars for a truly immersive game, even compared to the glamour of the newer games. Get it! It deserves to be in your collection and will not set you back any money.

Fun then Frustrating then Boring

Thief is a good game and it's fun...

But the game gets very frustrating and tire-some... then it starts to get boring.

The graphics are outdated. It isn't BAD, but they ain't great either.

The gameplay is basically sneaking around, knocking out soldiers, finding stuff, etc. Most of the missions are VERY hard... and sometime a little TOO hard. You get weopons like a sword, a bow & arrow ...water arrows, etc. You'll usually have to steal something in the missions.

The sound is great. You can hear peoples conversations, etc.

The control takes time getting used to.

Overall, I liked this game... but in the end it didn't turn out to be very replayable. It got boring and frustrating.

Try the demo first, and see how you like it.
