What a Game. Fantastic with no words

This game is proubly one of the best I've ever played. I play few computer games but this one really can get you going. With all the neat sounds, tools and weapons that Garrett has at his disposal and with his Keeper Training, this guy is un-stoppable. I wouldn't let little kids play this because of all the un-dead and noises around the place. Could proubly send some kid screaming to his or her parents, but for someone who is looking for something to do on a cold rainy day; buy this game and play it. Its fantastic. I can't describe it anymore then that.

Thief creates the kind of tension i have not see since doom back in 1994. Thief is one first person game which cannot be called a clone of doom because it is very orginal. This is a great game if your tired of those games where you just walk around and blow guys up. The reality of this game totally got me interested, stay out of the light or a guard might see you, don't make to much noise or a guard might here you. Very orginal, it makes you feel like you are actually inside the game, doing what your instructor says, such as hiding in the dark hiting your enemys from afar, with arrows, swords. A real masterpiece from the now gone Looking glass studios.

Fun playing Garrett

Awesome just awesome, One can see what inspired games like No one lives for ever, Deus Ex, Hitman Codename 47, Rainbow Six and you are going to see more games with the orginal concept of thief. You have to play it to find out how good this game is. You really feel like you are the character (Garrett). Takes a lot more brains than all the other first person games, you are a theif the main objective is not to kill. This game is going to be a historical one. This is the first game I ever felt like I was really in the game. You have choices as to were to go, what to buy to aid you, and who to kill. It takes me about 3 hours to finish one mission. It's new engine of shadow creeping, prowling without making a sound and incredible graphics and battles (You get to Sword-Fight guards and skeletons!) make this one of the best investments of my money. Thief is the first game which scares me even when an unarmed person is walking past where i am hiding. This is one of the best game's that I have ever seen and it's my favorite. You have to take a look at this game. It is everything stealth fans want.

VERY AWESOME AND CREATIVE GAME

It's funny. This game takes the FPS and puts a different twist. yada yada yada, read the rest of the reviews and you'll hear the praise. Now hear the truth. Thief is such a twisted and mentally warping game, at the same time providing such satisfying identity with the main character and his wit. We feeeeeel his pain. Anyway, back to the warping. The first half of the game is E N T I R E L Y different from the second half. the first half is everything that the other reviews tell: sneak around in darkness, avoid killing guards (although shooting an arrow into the neck of a drunk guard is sooo satisfying), yada yada yada. THEN. You take the 'skills' you've learned in the first half, and forget 'em, cause it's a whole new world to deal with. Anyone who is even close to a fan of TOMB RAIDER (which is my favorite game of all time) NEEDS to play the second half of this game. And THEN you get to an upside down twisted mind-freak level that will leave you scratching your brain with awe and satisfaction. Do yourself a favor, play this game, you WILL get frustrated at least 8 times in the begginning, you'll probably hate the ghosts and zombies and write them off as annoying until the very end, where you'll finally appreciate them. I loved the holy water aspect, and wish they would have done more with it, but what the hey? GO BUY IT! QUIT READING THIS! YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

Though the sneaking can get a little old after the AI becomes more predictable and after you've played both games many times over (like myself), there can be no denying that this game is an absolute masterpiece, more so than Thief 2 and probably more so than the new Thief Deadly Shadows, which so far has been getting a mixed bag of reviews, probably deservedly so since they seem to have watered the series down to appear to XBOX fans (my reaction to this is like one of the Thief 2 guard's reactions to seeing the body of a fallen comrade: "WHO'S DONE THIS??!!"

Levels:
-Lord Bafford's Manor: 9/10 Perfect for beginners and challenging (slightly) enough for experienced taffers, this mission is classic
-Cragscleft Prison: 10/10 What good was the Bafford job if your fence is locked up in prison? The crying and moaning in the prison areas is haunting, and this level features some of the most phenomenal shadow effects of all three games.
-Down in the Bonehoard: 9/10 Everyone seems to hate this mission because of the zombies and because there are no guards. But why? Garrett takes a break from larcenous burglary and opts for a more Indiana-Jones-style tomb raiding job, which is excellent in my opinion. In addition, this mission features your terrifying first encounter with a haunt (which many consider to be the most terrifying enemy ever implement in a game) and the haunting music of the Horn of Quintus
-Assassins: 10/10 Upon seeing the title "Assassins" for a mission which was originally supposed to send you into a Hammer Temple robbery, you know there is going to be some sort of twist. Someone murders a shopkeeper thinking it was you, and you have to trace the killers back to find out who hired them. Turns out to be a crime boss bent on eliminating some competition. Now he'll have to pay, in CASH! Probably the best robbery mission of the whole game, and the final mission before the plot kicks in (you can also see how truly cowardly the crime boss is if you sneak up on him in the dark)
-The Sword: 10/10 What a weird level. A jungle in the middle of the house? With all the marble floors and booby traps, this mission is hard as crap too.
-The Haunted Cathedral: 7/10 Easily the worst mission of the game (even though it's still good), due to the fact that much of completing the mission, on Expert at least, is going on a wild goose chase for scattered pieces of loot. The only redeeming factors are the haunting visuals, including the desolate abandoned manor where you find the serpentile torc, not to mention the unfriendly undead denizens who creep around inside
-The Lost City: 7/10 Nothing really special, just an ugly underground city. Find the tablets, do a little scouting, and leave.
-Return to the Cathedral: 10/10 Scariest mission in the game? More than likely, and its also the most haunting. Hearing the words of the first hammerite you put to rest in the grave is haunting as he says his final goodbye and thanks before he ascended to Heaven. The ambient music is phenomenal in this mission, eerie, haunting, epic, every positive thing you could call it. But if you don't want to get locked in the cathedral early on, you can simply prop the door open with the skull outside. I couldn't believe the game designers didn't notice this (or maybe they did, for those who want an easy way out)
-Undercover: 10/10 Here's a fun one, the only recommendation I can give you is to not steal anything until you're ready to break your cover, this is the rare mission where guards will notice stolen goods
-Escape: 10/10 Awesome. It's hard as hell to sneak completely unnoticed through this mission, so you'll do your fair share of slaughtering the Trickster's minions (they're easy to kill though)
-Strange Bedfellows: 10/10 More of the same. Awesome
-Maw of Chaos: 10/10: Payback time. This is the perfect closing mission for a perfect game, it's also a fitting way you kill the boss, the trickster in this mission for an "FPS" that focuses on stealth instead of slaughter, you kill him by simply sabotaging his ritual, not in a one-on-one deathmatch. This one is actually fairly easy too, unlike the insanely difficult final mission of Thief 2 (which was by far the most horrendous mission of the series)

GAMEPLAY: 9/10 Fun, but it can get old after you've heard all the taunts a hundred times and when the AI gets predictable
MUSIC: 100/10 Never has there been a more haunting plethora of ambient tunes implemented in a game, I guarantee you if you love creepy, dark music, you'll get goosebumps from the music, especially in Down in the Bonehoard, Return to the Cathedral, and Lord Bafford's Mansion. (also the Eavesdropping mission from Thief II, but for the most part Thief 2's soundtrack is unworthy of its predecessor's). Also, the music for the closing cutscene is chillingly beautiful, in combination with the scene of Garrett trudging through the beautiful falling snow in the dark of night. It gives a true sense of closure to the game.
SOUND 100/10 Unlike most games where you can play them muted, you have to listen to what's going on with the phenomenal directional sound or you'll be slaughtered. It's almost as important, if not more, than the screen visuals. The actual sounds are phenomenally realistic.
GUARD VOICES 10/10 Very good, scarier, but not as funny as Thief II's guards, who would often react to your sword striking a metal post with a resounding "WHAT THE HELL???!!!" The archers had much funnier, more sadistic lines in Thief II, like "LET'S SEE IF AN ARROW SOFTENS YOU UP!", "WHY DON'T YOU TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE!," and my personal favorite: "HUHUHUHERE YA GO!!!" This one's particularly funny because he says all his H words on one breath. If you've never heard it, and have Thief 2, go up to the guard who talks to the worker "Dante", near the back entrance to Building A (i believe) and fire an arrow into the metal door. It's funny as hell.
Cutscenes: 100/10 The greatest cutscenes ever...seriously, these are worthy of real movies, and I'm royally p*ssed to hear they've been removed from Thief Deadly Shadows. More watering down for the console crowd.

All in all this game is phenomenal. Please get this and the other two Thief titles, you won't regret it.

A Classic

I have to say that this is the most intense game I've ever played. It's also one of the most challenging games I've ever played. I got it many years ago and I still play it all the time. The graphics aren't very realistic (even though sometimes I think the graphics on the spiders are a little TOO realistic), but the sound effects are pretty good and don't take away the enjoyment of the game at all. When I first played this game I loved it because you had to sneak around in a medieval kind of setting with your sword, trying to get into a castle without being caught by the guards. It takes a lot of skill to play the game because you have to break into different places and steal gold and if you need to kill a guard you have to do it quietly or they'll all notice and you'll be killed. So you'll mostly have to sneak around in the shadows where you can't be seen which makes the game more interesting to play. There is a meter at the bottom of the screen that tells you how visible you are. Sometimes though, it's fun to get caught by the guards and have them chase you around until you die. It can be very entertaining and humorous. After playing the game for a while and beating a few levels, you'll meet some zombies and ghosts which can be very terrifying. When I first encountered them I didn't think I could play the game without having a heart attack. I mean, I've screamed while playing this game before, but I made myself play it because I wanted to see the other levels. Some of the levels can get quite interesting such as going inside this mansion with upside-down rooms and a forest INSIDE the house. While playing the game, eventually there won't be any guards left, just aliens and such, but that doesn't necessarily take the fun away, it just makes it more challenging. I would suggest this game to anyone who likes adventure or action games and doesn't mind having the crap scared out of them.

Incredibly difficult

I have to admit this is one of the most difficult games I have ever played. The controls are easy to learn, but the sword has a couple of moves that are hard to pull off. The difficulty is that this game is the complete opposite of most first person games, where the objective is usually to go in with both barrels blazing. Here, that only gets you killed. It is hard to go against the instincts trained in by the other games. Also, some of the levels are so large that it can be easy to get lost. The sound is amazing though...a game like this needs to have sound of the highest caliber to work, and the sound is outstanding. You truly need to hear it to understand. The only other bad thing I can say is the graphics, which are angular and flat. I understand it is necessary with the level of technology when this game was made, but it looks strange. Also, the way the characters move is...dreamy. It doesn't look right. They all kind of lope and limp around.

Could have been the greatest game ever...

I remember when I played the demo for this game. It was brilliant - you could stealth around, you had to be startegic and the atmosphere 10 times as tense as any other game ever. You had to loot a mansion and you could pick up some jewels for yourself as well. You had to AVOID making a comotion. The use of sound and light (or lack of them) was excellent as well. It was one of the best levels of any game I had ever played.

I got my hands on the full version and rushed through the first level, eagar to see what theivery lay ahead. When I started playing the second level I found myself making my way through a haunted mine where I had to avoid zombies, kill spiders and eventually free someone from a prison. The whole thieving aspect had been taken away, and not only had degenerated into a standard cliched fantasy hack n slash affair, it was a BAD hack n slash affair. The next 2 or 3 levels were the same. Yes, you had to be stealthy, but not in the same context. I never played on - I had no motivation to.

This could have been one of the best games ever, but in attempting to appeal to the mainstream (lets face it, the thievery aspect wouldn't have sold well on consoles) they messed it up, and they didn't even do the "it's-been-done-before" bit well. At least if it was done well it could have offered some short-term enjoyment (albeit forgetable) so that I wouldn't have completely wasted my money, but as it is it was a missed oportunity. Doesn't even deserve the tag "Thief" most of the time.

I'm Blind, I'm Blind!! No, wait, its just the game....

This game is more fun than having a bag of hammers dropped on your head, but not by much. A game where you rely on stealth and not your trigger finger is a good idea but I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING. I knew that I was in trouble on the very first mission. It went like this: Me: "Where am I? Is this a wall or a door? I'll just open it-" Guard: "Hey!" Me: "Oops!" Guard kills me. The End.

Wow. That was fun. Hoo-boy!

A quiet revolution on launch, 'Thief' plays like a cross between 'Rainbow Six' and the old playground favourite 'What's the time Mr Wolf'. As a sneaky thief, you have to steal your way through a series of absolutely enormous, atmospheric 'steam-punk' levels, avoiding guards, laying traps, and hiding in the shadows. Like almost everything by the late, lamented Looking Glass, 'Thief' is intelligent, well-presented, extraordinarily deep, and commercially only so-so.

The stand-out elements are the excellent, shadowy level designs, and the spooky, tense atmosphere. Your character is no good at fighting, and you have to sneak around behind people who might turn around at any minute, often in dark rooms, sometimes in haunted caverns. Imagine a really scary ghost story, crossed with the tension of bomb disposal, and you're there. The level design is highly original - the level set in a giant sarcophagous, in which you turn corners to find yourself face-to-face with large, gas-breathing dinosaurs, is an all-time classic.

Not much is wrong with 'Thief' - even the between-level FMV sequences are excellently done. Compared to something like 'Half-Life', the graphics are relatively primative, but the engine is doing a lot more. Often the hugeness of the levels makes working your way through the game seem impossible at time, and although your character is a thief it would be nice if he was at least competent with the sword. Apart from that, buy it.

It's best to hunt out the 'Gold' version (now on budget) - that added three new levels, a level editor, and some bug fixes.
