Alright, just about everyone I know said this was one of the best games ever. I've never agreed with them and I do not believe I ever will. The graphics aren't exactly mind blowing nor does the storyline keep you very entertained. You just go, hide, go, hide then run, hide. Not exactly the game to buy if predominately you enjoy shoot em up or fighting games. So save yourself some money and purchase some great games such as Half Life or Resident Evil.
Hello? Is this supposed to be entertaining?

Ahem, call me disappointed. Slow, tedious, and full of bugs. Some
times, the guard's heads stretch out like rubber bands for no apparent
reasons. (save, exit, restart) Your weapon will disappear, it sounds
like you are firing, but nothing happens and it is no longer
visible. (save, exit, restart). Then, to top it off, all of the sudden
I'm back in windows and the game has simply disappeared. (frequent
saves, restart, hopefully you haven't gone too far before you last
save!) Even without these 'glitches' the game was completely boring,
your character is a guy who sneaks around and tries to bonk people on
the head when they're not looking. Give me the old fashioned chain gun
any day. After reading the other 5 star reviews, I got all excited
... and ordered this extremely disappointing game. The only thing I
liked about the program was the introduction and the cut scenes. I am
not a sceptic, and I walked into this with a completely open mind,
full of anticipation, kinda like Christmas morning, I don't often have
any money to blow on a game. Do yourself a favor and find something
else, if you want it that badly, give me a call and I'll send you mind
COD!
How ambivalent!

Thief: The Dark Project, in my opinion, was pretty tedious compared to the fast-moving sequel. It started out fine, but it got really dull and annoying when I reached the zombie-infested parts of the game which include levels like Down in the Bonehoard and The Haunted Cathedral. I loved it at first, seeing new types of opponent apart from the usual guards, but the fun dies out pretty quickly because of the level structure. This is'll be a complete nuisance if the difficulty's set on Expert. The objectives of levels which have zombies and burricks are pretty demanding and they're all not located in convenient places. It requires a lot of going back and forth, which means that sometimes you face the enemies all over again as it's impossible to kill more than 1 especially since they move around in groups, so a quick glance, dart and hide is done mostly throughout the game.
The other levels are pretty "civilized", which involve reasonable objectives, and most of these are taken place in the City where it's mostly guaranteed you won't see mythical monsters like the zombies and the burricks.
The reason why this game mainly revolves around these monsters is because of the storyline. Garrett, the thief you play, finds himself being involved with dark Pagan rituals, people who worship the forces of nature and live in woods.
The graphics and lighting are amazing, and really set the atmosphere. I recommend this game, but a getting a lot from it is not to be expected.
Great

First of all I like anything that has to do with a thief. Now the game Thief is about how Garrett (the main character you play as) accomplishes his objectives which include black mailing, stealing, and frame. In the game you consist of much equipment for i.p. blackjack , sword, bow and a very of kinds of arrows, and lock-picks. You consist of many skills too suach as creeping, stalking, eavesdropping, and leaving no trail behind.
I have played this game and love it and if you love thieves as I do, then you will enjoy this game too. I love this game so much that I'm writting a book on it. Coming in 2004.
Best game I ever play...Try it....then you will love it.

Thief is a good game and it's fun...
But the game gets very frustrating and tire-some... then it starts to get boring.
The graphics are outdated. It isn't BAD, but they ain't great either.
The gameplay is basically sneaking around, knocking out soldiers, finding stuff, etc. Most of the missions are VERY hard... and sometime a little TOO hard. You get weopons like a sword, a bow & arrow ...water arrows, etc. You'll usually have to steal something in the missions.
The sound is great. You can hear peoples conversations, etc.
The control takes time getting used to.
Overall, I liked this game... but in the end it didn't turn out to be very replayable. It got boring and frustrating.
Try the demo first, and see how you like it.
Best game ever !!! (so what if it's been used it is)

... it takes a lot of strategy and cunning (and the knowledge to know when to save). If you're unsatisfied w/ the graphics use a voodo banshee graphics card. If you don't like re-playing levels on higher difficulties try one of the sequels. the best parts are the gadgets and the challenge.
Read all the great reviews but...

I finally got around to playing Thief and, given all its wonderful press, I ended up disappointed. Yes, I know the graphics engine is outdated now but even when it came out it must not have been that great. I found the constant stealth factor to actually not be that fun and found it very aggravating at times. Sometimes it takes ALOT of playing time to negotiate and area correctly without alerting the guards. I also found the player controls a little more stiff or crude or less responsive or something than most games of this nature. I played through alot of the first level and then gave up. Maybe it was a blast when it came out but now there are alot of other games that will give me much more fun and excitement. I will give Thief II a try (I already own it) but I feel it will be more of the same.
