Fantastic game, just don't expect to like the combat

Today, war is pretty boring, mostly because today's weapons require so little skill to use effectively. That is why swordplay is so interesting. Unfortunately, there are only two action games I can name off the top of my head that focus on this time peroid: Interplay's "Die by the Sword" and Eidos's "Thief".

After reviewers told me that Die by the Sword was rediculously hard, I went out and bought Thief. I was very surprised to find this not close to what I expected.

In Thief, your main objective is to avoid combat at all possible costs, since your guy is a poor fencer. Swordfighting is impossible, since the blocking button is totally ineffective, and the guards can take numerous blows to the head. Therefore, you must creep around in the shadows, using distractions and such to get guards out of the way. If you come face to face with a guard around a corner, RUN.

If you've played the playstation hit "Metal Gear Solid", this game is not too different, except it adds a "third degree" of stealth (the dark). Also unlike Metal Gear, the enemies are much, much smarter.

Things go wrong beyond the combat, however, when you start to meet the undead. This game would be 95% perfect if not for these guys. For once, I would like to see an action game without big monsters. Huge problem is, stealth is over. The beasts will not miss you in the dark, it is just a combat game now. How fun.

This will not serve your purpose if you want a swordfighting game, and other than Die by the Sword, I guess nothing will. Avoid "Diablo" or "Diablo II", no matter the temptation, unless you want your combat to be "see monster, click on monster". I recommend this game anyway, just get the code and skip any mission where it appears that you will do nothing but fight undead.

Thief: The Dark Project

Thief The Dark Project by Looking glass studios is an FPS game,No it is not a fist person shooter it is a first person sneaker,You have to sneak through the levels undetected.Thief is an orginal game and the very first sneaker game.Thief has a great storyline,One of the best stories ever told in a computer game. You play garrett a masterthief. The game is very tense and very very dark,As you play you will find yourself sitting closer and closer to the monitor screen. While playing it is better that you runaway if you get noticed by the gaurds instead of challenging them to a duel, because Garrett is not a very strong guy and the gaurds are not weaklings to fall down with a couple of blows. And when you lie down on the floor or hide in a dark corner of the place the gaurds wouldnt notice you.You need to solve the objectives without killing anyone but thats what makes the game so enjoyable. The objectives of the game are very hard in one level you need to follow the gaurds through the city streets without them noticing you.

Thief has 12 mission but they are very large and will take you long to complete,It has a training mission too even that is very scary and fun to play. The level design is fantastic,You need to sneak arround and explore Posh mansion,Haunted mine,Well gaurded prison,Ancient ruins,Haunted cathedrals ect.Thief's graphics are not that great but more than enough for the fantastic gameplay,The sound recording is excellent infact the sound is the most important for the gameplay. The villans in blood are really scarry, the skull faced hammer haunts are the most scary villans in a computer game,It moves very fast impossible to outrun and very hard to kill,If one of them spots you then you are finished,You will know when you see play return to the haunted cathedral. My favorite is "Return to the cathedral",It is the most scary level in the game. The AI is very good,The gaurds are smart and they react very well to every little sound.Thief has great weapons,The bow and arrow is the most realistic weapon in a computer game, The blackjack is my favorite weapons,Almost all (human AI only) mission can be completed with just the blackjack weapon. The voice acting in thief is fantastic,One of the best ever in a computer game,Stephan Russell who did the voice for Garrett has done a fantastic job,Surprisingly he did the voice for many other charecters in the game and one cant belive it is the same guy. The game is a must-have for any FPS or RPG game lovers,Thief The Dark project is one of the best first person shooter game and an important part in Fps history.

An Excellent Worthwhile Game

This is truly a first in it's genre. I've seen many firstperson shooters come and go with little strategy involved except kill ...and find the exit or some other goal. This is different, same first person view, but there is no mass killing, there is no ultimate weapon of mass destruction. The idea in Thief is stealth. Your objectives will range from robbing someone of there possesions, to following assassins trying to kill you. The strategy involved in this game is limitless. Stay in the shadows and you will not be seen, walk slowly or on quite surfaces and you will not be heard, put out lights, create a quite surface to walk on, move dead or unconcious bodies after they go down so that no one will see them and suspect of your presence, knock people out before they know you are there and they will make less noise when they go down than if you just killed them, pick locks to get into places you cannot find a key for, the possibiblities are endless. Not only does this game have wonderful gameplay, the graphics are wonderful, they create a good mood for the game and all things are well done. This game is the first time I have really paid attention to sound, before I haven't cared what was coming out of my speakers, in this game you hear guards or others, sometimes they will give you tips, other times you will get to listen in on an amusing conversation. Some games lack completely in storyline, Thief provides a deep lush story line that involves lies, partners and enemies in crime, hoards of loot, and more. Throughout the game there are wonderful cut scenes that add to and progress the storyline. Thief is definitly a must-have game.

Gaming just got a whole lot better...

At the time this came out, 1st person shooters were very common. Quake, Quake II, Unreaql, all promising great action, great engines, etc....but then came Thief, sneaking into the market as stealthily as Garrett himself. For those that had the fortune of trying out this unmarketed little game got something they have never seen before...a 1st person action game that forced them to think.

From it's opening moments, you adapt the body and the attitude of Garrett, a cynical thief whose greed is bigger than his fears. As you solve mission after mission, you become more in tune with youyr abilities and become as brash and cocky as the excellent voiceover of your alterego. Very stylish and very medieval, it is the only game I've ever played that has made me feel like I was part of medieval times.

The interface is similar to others I've played, but addition of the bow and arrows makes this game truly stand out from the other shooters. The sword and the blaster are no longer your favored weapon and there is no BFG. It is brains and agility that are the weapons of choice. There are many different types of arrows you can use, such as water (such that will douse torches from across the room so you can further sneak in the dark), noisemaker (to make useful distractions), moss (so you can tread upon noisy surfaces unheard), and others. Surface sounds? yes! Thief: The Dark Project has better sound and sound effects than any game I have ever played! It is truly amazing! You can hear conversations among the guards, whistling, walking (and the sound of people walking changes as they step on different surfaces), moaning zombies, and many more...all with the right perspective. Guard around the corner through a door sound muffled, sounds legitimately are placed in the area(speaker) you'd actually hear them in and yes water that sounds cool and refreshing...

This game is a marvel in storytelling. One that truly goes on the top 5 alltime greats list!

The Best Game I've Played In Years! This Is A Must Have!

You folks will love this game. It's strategic, smart, and a definite must have. At first, I was expecting a game all about stealing, and blackjacking, and once I realized that I'd be fighting zombies and monsters, I stopped playing. But that's only because I had my mind focused on the wrong idea. I had to open my mind to the game's real story, a game that tells the story of a man named Garrett. Garrett who left the Keepers, a group who study theories and time. Garrett took their trainings and used it in the art of thievery. Little by little, Garrett finds himself in a conflict between a cult named The Hammers, and a most vengeful god, The Trickster. With just a sword, some water arrows, and a mighty fine blackjack, Garrett most fight evil while still putting time aside to purse whatever he can from the local Hammerites. Once you got your mind in the right direction, this game will give you an experience of a lifetime. Though, I do not recommend this game to the simple-minded, and kill-em-all game fans. This game takes real thinking to beat, and must be a game taken seriously.

I've never played a game that I didn't find more intense and involving than Thief. If you enjoy tense atmosphere's, this game gives you a feeling of being the hunter and the hunted at the same time. Eidos made an excellent type of game here, but it could use a better storyline. While you may not play it much after the first 5 times through, it's extremely enjoyable. It sure beats going to rent 4 movies that you may not like for the same price.

A Masterpiece of the Late 90's

The first thing I noticed playing this game was the shadow system that allows the player to determine quickly and easily how well they are hidden. The innovation of it preoccupied me to no end. Truly one of the great ideas ever to come to computer game designers. I was also impressed by the forethought in causing different types of flooring to make more noise than others. I have not to date encountered better AI in a first person game. When guards see or hear you even for just an instant, they don't give up until they spend what seems like two or three minutes searching everywhere around them. Discovery of dead or unconscious bodies will cause them to search indefinitely and they sometimes become suspicious of opened doors, blood stains, or if they notice something has been stolen. As if all this wasn't enough, I also fell in love with the selection of thieving equipment. If the player prepares properly, there are many options and strategies that can be implemented in a given situation. The loot taken from each mission becomes the budget for equipment in the next. There's no hoarding of riches for later. The economics of the game, which could have become needlessly complex were kept streamlined and simple. I can think of no weakness in the system of game play. It is well balanced, challenging, outstandingly original, and mentally engaging. It is one of the finest crafted gems of late 90s computer gaming.

The plot is a potential downfall for a game about stealing; the player is best hooked when they can take delight in what they do. In this regard, the Thief creators were most ingenious. The story to my surprise was absorbing and I found myself becoming Garret, the master thief with a delightfully cynical voice. Missions take place everywhere from the manors of the rich and corrupt to a lost underground city. The music is very sparse, but even this is wise. One often must concentrate while playing and a minimum of distractions and background noise is desirable.

The graphics are primitive by the current standards, but they are crafted in a way that pleases my eye even so. The ambience, the lighting, the detail. I could scarce have asked for better. Technology is superceded by the imagination of the creators in this case. I can imagine myself beneath the soaring cieling of a Hammerite temple with grey urban light filtering through stained glass or in the hallways of Constantine's mansion with its garishly tiger-striped carpeting. I was there.

Thief easily ranks among my best gaming experiences of all time. Clean, pure, unblemished. It went down entirely too smooth.

I purchased this game before, but the discs were damaged and defective. I was shocked when I found this game for such a cheap price at Amazon. This gave me the benefit of the doubt because I figured I'd have to buy the compete store box version which is much more expensive. The game runs smooth on mose video cards I have used. One computer I had created problems in texture mapping so the world seemed completely coverd in snow. Given this game runs on XP and loot lists along with walkthroughs are avalible online so its a great pick. Some later versions of the Thief series allows user made levels to be availble for download. This might also be compliant with this game. Two thumbs up!

The Best I've Played With Minimal Confrontation

This game was the best I've played without having to kill everyone on the screen. I just started playing this game & I couldn't stop when I started. Many people have a problem with the amount of darkness there is. But think about it, It's the medieval times! There wasn't any electricity back then! The castles & caves where dark & only a vast amount of candles or torches could lighten the place up. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A THIEF! HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE SEEM! His element is darkness. Just increase the gamma on the monitor & you'll be singing, 'Happy Happy Joy Joy'! I love this game because it really challenged me to be resourceful & very careful of my steps. The most amazing aspect of the game is the sound. The best time to place this game is at night when no one else is at home to distract you. It'll seem like you been playing for 1/2 hour but you'll quickly find out it's been 3 hours. Make sure you have an incredible sound card that will enhance all the sounds all around you.

It is the best game I have ever played, I go back to it time efter time. You can chose to be agressive running and shooting or walk in the shadows through the whole game, and that is mostly the winning approach (but not always).
