Good, but TOO real

I had played the first half-life and though it was pretty cool. The second is a whole new thing. The graphics are too real for me and its too reaistic. And although ive only played the demo: half-eaten bloody corpses and burned corpses with organs showing is where i draw the line! And i use the kids form for reviewing because its so much easier :)

Lets talk about the game and not steam getting overwhelmed

Well after reading a few of the reviews and the whiners therein, I decided to add a review that really gets to the heart of the matters.
First, the game was released midnight Nov16, tens of thousands of people that preloaded the game were all trying to authenticate and unlock the files to play at that moment, and no doubt the steam servers were overwhelmed. Add the people that bought the retail dvd/cd versions and you have a huge backlog. For myself it took about 1/2 hr to unlock the files. I recommend users to buy the game through STEAM (www.steampowered.com) for a couple reasons. Purchasing through steam gives you more options and a large back catalogue to benefit from. I got the silver package. As well you are not stuck with having to insert the dvd every time you play the game. Buying retail only gives you HL2 and Counterstrike:Source, but for the same money through steam you get CS:source, HL:source, HL2, Day of Defeat:source, and all the back issues of these games, thats about 8-10 games, quite the deal for 59.95USD.

Ok, I'm an older guy and just started gaming a couple years ago.
I really enjoy the counterstrike mod of Half-Life, it has all the elements I enjoy in a FPS. No other game combines all these elements into one game as sucessfully as counterstrike, and the fact that the game has been active for over 6 years speaks to its value and playability. At any given time there are from 5000-60,000 counterstrike servers online with about 150,000 players. http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html

Half-life 2 is just amazing, you will need every skill you can think of to play this totally immersing game. You need shooting skills, puzzle skills, dexterity skills, strategy skills, stealth skills, driving skills, and lots more. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is long, interaction with objects is fascinating and you can play at 3 skill levels. The storyline flows as you wind your way from city to tunnels, prison, to seashore, daytime to night, indoors and out. You will find yourself needing to stay very alert to fight off all the different types of opponents and creatures. There is always just enough health kits available, and generally more than enough ammo for the wide variety of weapons at your disposal. I havent finished the game yet, but I suspect Im somewhere near the end. For the first 5 nights I totally screwed up my sleep habits and found myself going to bed at 5am.
Do lots of saves, as getting through any level is no easy feat and frustrating if you have to repeat it.
This will certainly be the game of the year for its gameplay, graphics, AI, skills required and level of intensity.

Enjoy it's money well spent if you buy through steam.

This game is awesome from beginning to end. The graphics, the physics, the interactivity... it all makes the game feel so real. This is the best game to come in a very long time. The only thing that even minutely dissapoints is the plot, not much is really explaned by the end of the game, but that leaves plenty of room for a 3rd. Oh boy, oh boy!

Best game of all time!!!

The graphics are great, but what really makes this game a classic is the gameplay.
One issue mentioned by previous reviewers is that it is too easy; it certainly is a lot easier than "far cry" which I played at one of the easiest levels. By contrast, on HL2
the "hard" level is perfect for me despite the fact that I am a below-average gamer.
Before it arrived, I was worried about the internet connection issue people have mentioned in earlier reviews, as I only have a slow dialup through my university. But you only need the internet connection to set it up the first time (which took an hour an a half or so). After that you simply play in "offline mode".

this game keeps me buisy for months

ive been playing half life on steam ever since it came out and i am still pla ying half life 1 until the day half life 2 came out i love this game the graphics made my jaw fall off (seriously i look like the person off of the grudge) the sound is terrific the game play should get 100/10 the only flaw is is the regular version doesnt come with half life source or day of defeat source (coming out soon) people might not want this because so many flaws with steam not this time! you dont need secuity modules and you only get updates for the game and models that will fix the games flaws (not many it will keep us all buisy until the day half life 3 comes out or the next expansion (play it on steam you will get a new chapter and remakes of old levels for hl and cs original maps) in other words this game is 100 times better than doom 3 in all ways and its a better deal this is only the beginning of half life lets think how much more realalistic hl3 will be..............

Awesome game. Better than Halo in single player mode

I hate to say it, but after playing Halo2 and about a third into HL2. I have to say HL2 is the better game in terms of storyline, technology and fun factor.

In my opinion, Halo2 was not as well executed as the original and there are areas in the game you noticed that they most likely rushed to get the game out. The original Halo had a 'epic' feel to the storyline. The voice over was clear and the variety of settings keep you engaged throughout. In Halo2, a lot of the magic was simply not there. It feels more like a narrowly focused storyline, and most of the time I could even understand what the characters were saying.

Not true so far with HL2. HL2 is as strong (if not stronger) than the original HL. The character model and animation is the best I've seen so far. They look so real it's frightening. The story from chapter to chapter makes sense and has a organic continuation throughout. It draws me in as I play more and more.

The biggest negative feedback I have is the load time between chapters. On a slower machine, it is rather tedious and especially if you sometimes want to revisit previous chapter to get ammo or stuck. What happen to the original HL quick load feature?

A multi-player version of HL2 will also have helped much. This is where Halo2 will win for sure as it will win more mind share among gamers after they finished the single player mode.

Overall, I can't give HL2 less than a 5 star. It's the best shooter I've played so far.

A long time Halflife Fan...

First off... People need to read system requirements on the boxes of games, and or do more research.

Second the game is phenominal. I have a simple Dell 4600... Except for a better graphics card (a wimpy 256 MB Radeon 9550)
everything on my computer is stock. The game itself is great and because I owned the first halflife I already had a Steam account which makes things much easier.

Strengths: The games graphics, AI, storyline and flow are all great. Water looks real (literally real) Characters move and speak fluidly. The AI enemies think and engage together. The storyline is interesting and the game overall plays fine.

Weakness: The Loading Times... The loading times for me are normally 1-2 minutes for the next area to load. I'm simply going to buy some RAM to help this.

Overall: Buy it if you don't have a crappy computer. :)

Few Things People Should Know About HL 2

Half Life 2 is a great game!
Engine is awesome, story is engrossing, and pretty much everything else is good too.

Players w/o a top-end machine should anticipate many slow loading times (it takes three different loading processes to begin playing everytime); serious sound stuttering, which has plagued many players and i have chosen to ignore; subtle pauses during explosions or other intricate occurrences; the elimination of characters that we were expecting, such as the hydra, prowlers, female combine assassins, and also fighting various types of stalkers.

If you can fully enjoy the game with these flaws, then u r in for a treat, personally i think this should be a given since HL2 is extremely high profile, ergo just disregard your complaints.

OHH, also the ending... is uhhh... bad.

Valve obviously did multiple renditions of the HL2 plot, making it up as they go to fit its "grand scheme", somehow they decided it was the most suitable ending, but i disagree, and you will probably find it estranging seeing it the 1st time.

FINAL WORD: HL2 is not the greatest PC game ever made, even though me and countless others expected it to be. It is not a timeless classic but a worthy and notable transition to another game, HL3, which will be... uhh... the greatest PC game ever made, at least we hope so.

Great game

Game looks great and it play wonderfully. But the ending was horrible! I hope they have an expansion pack soon. Even though, overall, I was extremely pleased with the sequel to the greatest game ever.

FUN!!!

Yey! Its out and i bought it.

What can i say its been a year since i was anticipating this and i enjoued it A LOT! Now before i tell you about i will say something about steam:

I dont realy understand why people hate it. I been using Steam for over 2 years i think, its a very usefull programm for managing your games it organizes the list of games news updates server browers yada yada yada. I say this just in case some of you wondering what steam is.

Ok the game is excelent! Of course physics and graphics are amazing, game is made in such way that almost everything is interactable and gives lots of chances to use nature in order to kill you enemys whether its smash burn drown blow up lots of things! Now decapatating bodys have been mostly removed only headcrab victims can be sliced in half but that dose not make the thuding body less fun :)

Holy COW! The story is realy cool and the first person cu scenes are sweet, over all the game feels very epic, as you progress almost all the time things are happening all around you, the atmosphere itself is done very well, like Ravenholm realy makes you feel the desperation of the infested city. most weapons are still here but be ready for a couple changes :)

Now another thing is some of you that remmember the early trailers well most of the footage is no longer inside the game i am guessing due to the source code being stole however i was not dissapointed it was still A LOT OF FUN!
So umm go play.
