Buy it. Gehn is waiting for you...

THE best game ever made in all time! Anyone who doesn't like this game should be dragged into the street and shot. The graphics are incredible, the plot is mesmerizing, and the puzzles would give Einstein a run for his money. But don't buy it as a challenge; buy it as an adventure! Catherine and the Moiety need your help... don't let them down! Help Atrus! Capture the evil Gehn for all of eternity! Go to the 5th Age and save a dying world!

Even Better Than MYST!

It's weird, but I played on Riven for two weeks straight. Then I decided to go back to MYST, just for the heck of it. Guess what? MYST looks totally fake compared to Riven. Do it. Play Riven for a while, then go back to MYST. Notice the difference? That's one of the reasons why I like Riven the best. Also, it's more 3-D (you get to go up stairs and stuff everywhere). I don't understand why some people hate Riven. MYST was so obscure, I had to get a cheat book to understand it!! But with Riven, it was more fun because I could do it on my own : )

Riven is addictive. The graphics are great. The wait was worth it. Don't be too quick with the spacebar and zip mode. There's stuff you need to find out first. I got it to work on my NT 4.0 box without incident even though it's "not supported." I downloaded three CDs to the "data" directory so that I didn't have to swap'em so much. I was disappointed that I couldn't use shortcuts to link to files on another partition so I could have all five CDs on disk at a time. I became immersed quickly and found the puzzles interesting, if not all that challenging. I expect they're more straightforward for those of us with a math/cs background. You definitely need to keep notes and figure out where things are to solve some of the puzzles. This was the most challenging thing for me because I'm more logical than topographical. "Tales from Topographic Oceans" would be good companion muisc.

Amazing!

I thought Myst was great with it's graphic and sounds but Riven outsmarted it by far. Riven is much more complicated than Myst and the graphic and sounds are amazing!. Riven is a strategy game. None of that bang bang violence. I had a hard time figuaring it out. You need sharp eyes for all the tiny clues you need to find out. But I got on better than my friend.

I you like great graphics, sounds, and love looking for clues than this is the game for ya! Of course if you want to know the history than get Myst or read the Myst books that came out. I read all 3 of 'em and I thought they were really good.

Intriguing to say the least...

Artistically, this is one of the best computer games on the planet. The graphics are eye-popping, and made me feel like I was really in the Age of Riven. My only complaint about this game (if it can even be called something so trivial) is that the puzzles are near-impossible. Beating the game without tips requires a huge amount of intelligence, and requires you to learn a foreign number system as well. But whether you have to use "tips" and "cheats" or not, make sure you don't miss the ending. It is fantastic.

Tranquil, Peaceful, Phenomenal!

Clear and breath taking! Truly a work of art! I fell into the world and enjoyed it's beautifully creative puzzles. The natural scenery was so realistic that I found that between sessions of playing the game and for sometime afterward, whenever I stood in a natural setting, I felt like I was back in the game! Awesome!

a novel you can inhabit

Riven is beautiful and engrossing. It is not so difficult as portrayed in some reviews, although it does take patience and persistence. It took me several rainy vacation days to complete, without hint books, etc. If you allow your imagination to inhabit the novels you read, Riven will be both intuitive and diverting. If you are not a reader, don't bother.

Amazing, but in the end you feel best things lie beyond

A breathtaking game, a masterpiece of artwork. I write down this after scrolling through other some 50 reviews, several months after playing the game (I borrowed it and passed it on; din't come back, so was looking to reviewing it if you're a fan of action games. In the meantime has been a good choice even if you care for side aspects as graphics and sound (Stars! has virtually no graphics but is addicting and endlessly hyerarchically, so you don't get stuck, and as you discover the complexity of the design, you gain in understanding. The frustrating thing are all achieving the goal, on the other side give you glimpses of a whole universe that lies just beyond your reach, making you long for and denying knowledge at the same time. Philosophical standpoint or just marketing strategy I found the older more difficult to solve and less enjoyable, because the riddles were not interlinked, needed a couple of cheats (the floating chest!). I didn't find the finals in the new one particularly intriguing, after the build up of the tension throughout the game, they leave you whith a feeling of void , like you've got nowhere. Preferred the MYST's one, more artistically balanced and coherent with the concept.

My types of game are more CivII and Blade Runner (remember Master of Magic? best ever), but if you like thinking while you play and expect a deeply-designed context around the game-plot, this one is a must, you can't miss it!

A beautiful, immersive experience that sets a new standard.

There are very few computer games I enjoy. I'll buy a popular title thinking "I need to know what everyone's talking about," get it home, start playing it, and it just seems trivial and boring. So far, the only games that have kept my attention are Half-Life and Riven. While Half-Life grabs you with an adrenaline rush and doesn't let go, Riven is the opposite. It's like taking a peaceful, relaxing vacation in a beautiful realm that is part John Muir, part Jules Verne, part Windham Hill. After a particularly annoying day at work, I found it relaxing and satisfying to spend time simply wandering around Riven, taking in the beautiful scenery and listening to the beautiful music.

The puzzles and plot were fun (if not always logical; did the submarine have any practical purpose? Well...no, but it was really cool.... And what was the deal with the marbles and the industrial press? But, they were still really...cool.), but what kept drawing me back to Riven was the inventiveness, detail, and beauty of the world the brothers Miller and their colleagues created. That is what makes Riven an enchanting experience long after you've rescued Catherine and saved the inhabitants. After "the game" is over, you can always return to Riven and just breathe in the beauty.

A new reality

After having immersed into Gehn's fifth age - the beautiful and fascinating Riven - the real world became even more real to me. Birds sing, and I hear them. Trees become green, and I notice it. Even more than before. Sight and sound in Riven have significance in the puzzles. So you must learn to notice them. And this training alone is worth buying the game. Nature is so wonderful (it's a tech freak who writes this).
